Tomas Mejias-best job in football?

I'd be bored out my brain.

You have to train hard for match fitness as you could be called up at any time, knowing full well that you're just wasting your time.

Life is not for wasting.

In fact, I kind of know how it feels.

When I was 10 or 11,, there was a weekly 5 a side tournament for schools at the Harold Wilson Recreation Centre in Thornaby which took place after school.

I was the sub.

I'd turn up every week as requested, sit there watching everyone else play (and lose), and not once got a single minute's playing time.

This went on for weeks, until the whole thing finally ended. It still rankles with me to this day.:cry::cry:

It’s not a bad gig for him but as 3rd choice keepers go he’s more than capable back up but yes he obviously has a rick in him. Can’t imagine he is on the greatest of wages and just a fella to cover in case of emergencies and help with the training. Didn’t have a problem with him coming back at the time and I still don’t now.

I'd agree with that. I think as a third choice keeper getting their personality/mentality right is important. You probably don't want anyone as a third keeper who is too ambitious, competitive and who is looking to play regularly. If they were like that it could lead to divisions in the group, the keepers after all are very much like their own little team within a team if you know what I mean.

You want someone who is supportive, a good team player who helps the other keepers along, but who could step up and do a job if an injury crisis hits.

In addition from bits and pieces I've seen and from comments made about him from other club staff from his first and second spells here he seems to have a bit of personality about him. He seems popular in the dressing room so will probably be decent for morale. So long as he's not on too high a wage I don't see it as an issue.

I can understand the viewpoints above about using a young keeper as third choice but generally keepers are better a little older having got some experience. You want your young promising keepers out getting first team experience at a slightly lower level. Then coming back to challenge for a place in the first team squad. They won't get that vital experience sat in the stands and playing youth footy. Equally if you did get an injury crisis chucking a very young keeper in could break them if they don't have sufficient first team experience at a decent level to fall back on. Counter argument is it could make them, but far more get broken in that situation than become a young keeping superstar.

Spot on. Exactly how I see the situation. And you see it at other clubs aswell, Carson at City, Lonergan was at Liverpool, Martin at West Ham and now Hart at Spurs. It’s common in football and like you say, it’s better for the younger guys who are ambitious and want to be a no 1 somewhere to get out and play where possible.

All great points, adding to my view, it's a great gig to have, for the right person

Absolutely. It’s a funny mindset to have but their is clearly people who have that mindset and it works for them and suits clubs too. If it was me, I couldn’t imagine me having that mindset but it isn’t me

I also suppose we need a number of keepers for training and the reserve/U23 games too?

If the squad is playing eleven v eleven, we need at least two straight away!

If you've grown up dreaming of being a footballer (and playing in front of crowds), I don't see how you could be truly happy being a third choice keeper. When Martin played for West Ham in the PL (against Chelsea wasn't it) he was so emotional after the game. Surely a bit of pent up frustration was part of that?

Can imagine some second tier Spanish side would take him.

We sent him on loan to a second tier Spanish side in 2017 and he couldn't get a game.

Fact of the matter is he's played one full season of league football at an actual club in his career, and that was in the Cypriot league.
He's just not that good a keeper, and he's not a tempting signing for anyone at 31, he's made 50 appearances in his career since leaving the Real Madrid B team.

That is a crazy stat, even if he is on a lowly (for football) £50K yr that's a good salary for effectively being nothing more than a ball boy, and making the numbers up at training.
Hope he is doing either coaching badges or some sort of studying for post football, but that's up to him.
