Time for a second lockdown?

Been in two drinking establishments and two restaurants in the last couple of weeks.

One, a social club, has gone out if its way to make social distancing possible.

One restaurant was going so far to keep the customers safe.

The other two were doing nothing at all.

I think icu or hospital admission start going up, as deaths lag 3 weeks behind this data
half the people that enter ICU will not leave. Again that's after the horse has bolted. It's certainly a better measure than deaths, You need a lead indicator

Argh the anti science brigade at it again.

Cases rising, deaths falling. Massive increase in testing.

Lockdown proven to increase deaths from other causes.

Calm down.

Cases rising, Yes

deaths falling, No

Lockdown proven to increase deaths from other causes.: Proof?

My partner and I have remained in lockdown since April due to her ongoing medical issues. Luckily I am furloughed so there is no requirement for me to do my daily 2 hour commute.

Personally, I think the lockdown was eased too soon and money making became more important than peoples lives

Sorry to break this to you, but the economy is more important than lives.

By contrast, I met up with some friends in London three weeks ago. The normally bustling areas of Southwark and London Bridge were largely deserted, on a Friday night. I was the only person in my carriage on a 10:30pm train home. A train which is normally standing room only.

That's not sustainable. Loads of businesses are going to go bust. Long term lockdown can't be the answer.

There probably does have to be a bit of a trade off between the economy...and jobs, and livelihoods, and the risks of an increased death rate.

Businesses will go bust. That's the way it is. The majority of the businesses going out of business are those relying on passing trade on the High Street as people change shopping habits.

Other casualties will be bars and restaurants as people stay away from them in order to protect their health, and who can blame them?

Some businesses could be doing more when it comes to both creating conditions people feel safe in and policing from my experiences so far.

I wish people would stop using Sweden as a what we should do...
Yes why would anyone use a country that has got through the pandemic with a minuscule death toll in relation to its population and not having put its economy down the bog as an example of a good idea?

Exactly.

Cases rising is 'probably' proven cases . Remember during the first wave there was limited availability to tests. We now have much easier access to tests. This means we are identifying a lot more cases.

The mortality rate of deaths:cases seems to be dropping. But that is likely an indication that a lot more people got infected but not tested during the first phase. It is still just as lethal.

The status is that cases are increasing, but nowhere near the levels of first wave yet. It can reach those levels very quickly if people don't stop being conspiracy theorist idiots. It's still as deadly, there is still no cure for serious cases. Oh and regarding cancer treatments, you would have thought the first thing to relax would be cancer and other treatments, not pubs and cafes and cinemas. Tells you a lot about this governments priorities!

Lets be honest we've been watching a steady death of the high st and pubs for 2 decades. Covid is just euthanising them

Miniscule? Really

More than 5,500 people have died with Covid-19 in this country of just 10 million. It is one of the highest death rates relative to population size in Europe, and by far the worst among the Nordic nations. Unlike Sweden, the rest all chose to lock down early in the pandemic

I was on several trains at the weekend and huge groups of men and women going to Leeds or York, p****d on the train and none wearing masks. The trains were totally packed out and zero social distancing. I had to use the train for medical appointments otherwise I 100 percent wouldn't be on them... It was a disgrace

I was the East Coast Main Line last week and it was perfectly fine. All people wearing masks and carriages planned with social distancing in mind.

Mine was Saturday... Loads and loads of what looked like hen and stag parties.. Won't have been and god knows which bars were going to the them all in at once

We need to understand the age profiles of those that are tested positive.
It looks like at the beginning of the lock down the age profile was elderly resulting in the problems in care homes, resulting in the high death rate.
If the age profile is younger due to unlocking the pubs etc, then this wont necessarily carry the same risk factors. If the carriers can be contained before passing on to the elderly.
The problem is the R rate should have been much lower than 1 before unlocking the economy

That is 0.05 percent of the Swedish population. So yes in comparison to its total population it is tiny and the majority to these tragic deaths were elderly people or people with pre existing illnesses. And they have not sent their economy and millions of people’s live into the abyss in the process.

The City of London will be a ghost town for months to come. In fact one or two major professional firms have no firm plans to return until the end of 2021! They can work from home and the losers will be the property owners once those lease periods end.
