* The Unofficial "Official" Watford v Boro Match-Night Thread *

We didn’t deserve that. Muniz FFS. Just cost the lads a well deserved, hard earned point there. Why the f*ck you would do that in injury time, away from home, against one of the best teams in the league. Ridiculous.
Although i do agree with you it’s not always so black and white. He’s seen an opportunity, the keeper was off his line and took a chance. Had it went in wed all be putting our hands up vvank him off. Slightly harsh to blame him I think

I’m calming down now TBH. I still think it was daft but he’s a young lad. He looks very promising and played really well tonight. Just frustrated to see us play well and not get what we deserve. Again.

Ideally Akpom would have been fit and on the bench to come on and give a physical presence. But I do think with the way we were playing Watmore would have held on to the ball, kept things more simple and likely would have won free kicks to eat up more time.

Watmore for McGree would have helped us defend from the front better, so that could have worked as well.

I wouldn't want to take that kind of thing out of Muniz' game. And I hope he isn't criticised by Wilder for it. I think his willingness to try the unexpected will be a real plus for us this season. Just not tonight.

Ideally Akpom wouldn’t have been at the club at all. Wilder didn’t want him here. I’ll say it again, if we’re pinning our hopes on Chuba Akpom, we might as well write the season off now.

We have conceded the most in the league at 12 goals after 7 games. If we continue that form over 46 games thats 84 goals (based on 49 games so take away our average or goals conceded so far for 46 games so at 1.7 goals per game which is 5.1) so that’s 79 goals. Peterborough and Reading were the only two clubs to concede that many last season. One was relegated and one avoided relegation on the last day. Going no where unfortunately.

We only let in 50 Goals last season and even that wasn’t good enough. I struggle to see we will let less than 38 goals in the remaining 39 games!

The top two over the last two season:

Fulham 43 goals
Bournemouth 39 goals

Norwich 36 goals
Watford 30 goals

No chance of keeping that sort of record. So 6th position over the last two seasons:

Luton 55 goals
Bournemouth 46 goals

Going no where.

No, no. Opinion based on hard facts is not allowed. You must offer up your blind faith in a ‘better’ style of football that so far has yielded nowt.

Akpom is suited to Wilder's system. A physical presence, quick, strong and willing to work hard pressing high up the pitch. At the very least he's a very good option to have on the bench.

I'm not sure how anyone could have watched him this season and not see him as a potential asset.

He’s definitely been better than I’ve seen him in the past, an I’ve seen a lot of him, enough to know that if we have aspirations of promotion (which I’m now doubting we do, despite Wilders post-Preston bluster) his history suggests that he just doesn’t score enough.

He's not expected to be the leading scorer this season. That's the job of Muniz and whoever the other striker turns out to be. Football is a squad game and in terms of squad players who offer a physical presence, press and can offer a threat, Akpom is more than good enough.

That’s what I’m asking, good enough for what? A side with aspirations of promotion? Or a side looking to consolidate and rebuild?

As a squad player? Either. Do you expect us to have 4 or 5 top quality strikers? That's not realistic in the Championship. And we're going to need 4 or 5 players capable of rotating in and out with the kind of football Wilder plays as it's very high intensity. Akpom offers a physical presence, pace and hard work, he can come on for the last 20 or 30 minutes of games and play alongside a main striker in other games - and he'll provide those qualities.

We're likely to end the transfer window with Muniz, Watmore, Akpom, Forss, Hoppe and one other. I really don't see the downside to having all of those options.

I’ve seen every league game this season and we’ve been the better side, or at least equal in everyone bar Reading . West Brom - should have been over by half time. QPR - awful twenty minutes but then fought back and could easily have drawn. Sheffield Utd - gritty and should have won it at the death. Stoke - Battered them but some how drew 😵‍💫. Reading - poor, deserved what we got. Swansea - cruising before making hard work of the last 20 minutes. Watford - gave as good as we got but switched off at the end against possibly the best squad in the division.
We aren’t as far off as some are making out from being a very good side. Fry would be my first name defender on the team sheet, I don’t care if he’s not a great passer or brings the ball out like Bobby Moore, he’s our best centre back in the middle, it’s as simple as that and he should be playing. Clarke Fry Lenihan, that’s your back three. Wing backs are a given in Jones and Giles, but there is definitely something not right in midfield. Crooks scores goals and can’t be left out, Howson and Mowatt are not mobile enough to play in the same team, we need someone in there who can do the graft that Tav did. Seen enough of McGree now to know he’s not the answer as a number ten - every shot he’s had this season has ended in row Z, he just tries to break the net every time, no composure whatsoever. Muniz looks top quality, he’ll score and create plenty - get someone alongside of equal ability and they would score a hatful. It also has to be said we had zero luck so far with several decisions that have happened during games. We could easily had another 4 or 5 points on the board with a little bit better run of luck. I think our season is going to hinge on whether we get another top class striker and midfielder in now - we’ll know the answer in 48 hours i guess !

Spot on. Are we any better off for sacking Warnock?

I think we are.

Remember Warnock was going at the end of the season anyway.

So the choice is between Warnock sacked, and Wilder in. A man with a history of promotions, a clear plan for how he wants us to play and hes now had what? 9 months odd to instill the system in to the squad?

Or Warnock until May. Then whoever happened to be available over the summer? Then moving Warnocks players on and trying for some of the same signings the club have already been after and some identified by the new manager. And the squad learning a new system for the last couple of weeks.

Maybe it won't work out with Wilder here but I think it has more chance than the second option.

Chris Wilder`s "history" shows he has excellent man-management and team - building skills.
In order to analyse the "facts" in an adult fashion - we need to use rational and objective assessment .
A starting point based on emotive, emotionally-loaded, subjective and personal abuse is a pointless exercise.
Only one manager since Southgate has taken us into the Premiership.
Including Aitor Karanka, we`ve had 13 Managers [including caretakers] since 2009.
Im hopeful that all opinions are based on established "Facts" - not just those selected to justify their own personal agenda.
Its nearly midnight and my cocoa has gone cold.
Im certain there will be further discussion as the season progresses (y)

All of those three objectives.
You cant get promotion without aspirations and goals.
And you wont achieve those aspirations unless you build and consolidate a team capable of achieving those objectives.(y)

Evening Funky(y)
McGree did score a spectacular opening goal in our 2-1 win [our first win this season] against Swansea.

It’s the only time I’ve seen him have any composure in front of goal unfortunately. He’s a squad player for me, not a starter roofie
