Its Official!

According to some peripheral Media outfits - Scott Parker pulled a button off his cardigan after being battered by Liverpool!
"Sources" claim he made disparaging remarks [ to the Board] and found his wash-bag and Brylcreme next the refuse bin.
"Sources " claim Chris Wilder is "in the running" to be next Bournemouth gaffa!!!!! [I wonder if he knows yet?] - a club the size of a phone box - deep in sticky stuff ?
Nah(n)

It was thrilling to watch Riley McGree score that brilliant goal against the Swans and the "Big Tree" get in on the act too. Great to see Matt Clarke fit like hand in glove and immediately slot into the team. Muniz looked confident. We can expect great things from him. As this window heads to closure its hard to say who, where, when, what will happen next? We will see.

Watford are allegedly a "Premiership Club" who generally get relegated every other season. They are amongst the favourites to go up / down / up / down.......[You know how it goes].

Lions live longer than hornets - apparently. The Hornets opened their Vicarage Road 100 years ago today? [it looks like it]

The Sky cameras descend upon Watford as they celebrate 100 years at Vicarage Road, after first playing here on August 30th 1922 against Millwall when a crowd of around 8,000 spectators saw the sides play out a 0-0 draw. Fast forward a century and a repeat perhaps wouldn’t go down too well considering Watford have already drawn half of their opening league games (W2, L1), with their unbeaten start coming to an end with a 3-2 home defeat at the weekend.

Watford did at least show character in that game when twice drawing level against QPR, although it was former Middlesbrough man Albert Adomah who finished them off. With Watford unbeaten across the last nine league H2Hs (W5, D4) and in each of their last 13 Tuesday Championship games (W9, D4), many will expect a quick recovery here.

With Middlesbrough’s squad finally taking shape in what has been a slow but sure transfer window, their first win of the league season last time out (2-1 vs Swansea) was a welcome sight for their long-suffering fans (W1, D3, L2). Centre back Matt Clarke put in a man of the match performance on his debut, with that fresh solidity being complimented by the addition of Rodrigo Muniz up front.

The next hurdle in Middlesbrough’s evolution as a potential promotion contender is to fix their faltering away form, with Boro now winless in six road trips (D3, L3) in what is their joint-longest run since an 11-game stretch ending in 2019. However with the lion’s share of possession and goal attempts in all of their away trips this term, it feels like a win could arrive soon.

Players to watch:
1661870952996.pngKen Sema has contributed to Watford’s first goal in three of their last four Championship games (G1, A2).

As for Boro, Matt Crooks made two goal contributions in each of his last three scoring appearances, after scoring and assisting before half-time at the weekend.

Hot stat: Middlesbrough are unbeaten in 11 of their last 14 away Championship games played on a Tuesday (W6, D5).

Why do The Hornets have a moose on their badge?

Are there many moose herds in Hertfordshire?

Good afternoon .
Found this:

"WHY DO WATFORD HAVE A MOOSE ON THEIR BADGE?"

Why, if their nickname is The Hornets, do Watford have a moose on their club badge? asked Martyn Amos.

"The moose is actually a hart - a male deer - which represents the hart part of Hertfordshire," says Tim Beesley, from Berkhamsted, Herts.

"I've no idea why the spelling is different, lost in the mists of time no doubt," he continues. "But I do know it is on the badge to represent the fact that for a very long time Watford were the only league club in Hertfordshire. Of course, this is no longer the case as Watford have been joined by Barnet."

"This is a relatively recent badge, as I think I'm right in saying the Watford badges of the 60's and 70's had a hornet on them," he adds.

And the reason why Watford are called the Hornets? As Alan Brydon points out, that's because of their distinctive yellow and black kit.

Rob Edwards has urged his players to provide a quick response to Saturday’s QPR defeat ahead of Tuesday night’s visit of Middlesbrough (August 30, 8pm KO), with the Head Coach itching for a performance and a result to cap the planned Vic 100 celebrations.

The Hornets suffered their first league defeat of the season at home to the Rs last time out, with a lively encounter ending in favour of the opposition despite goals from Ken Sema and João Pedro highlighting some positive attacking play.

With a quick turnaround before the next match Edwards explained that work back at the training ground has continued in earnest over the bank holiday, and he is confident from what he has seen and heard that the team can deliver a performance for the fans to be proud of.

The Boro clash coincides with the 100-year anniversary of Watford’s first match at Vicarage Road - with a host of celebrations and festivities planned throughout the evening - and Edwards is hoping he and his players can add to the smiles in the stadium.

“We were in on Sunday for a recovery session, and those that didn’t get as many minutes trained,” the 39-year-old said. “Today we’ve had a good meeting, looking ahead to Middlesbrough but also having a bit of a review of Saturday.

“The message has been clear - there are areas we know we need to improve, but there wasn’t loads and loads wrong against QPR. The players are clear with what they need to do and they’re focused on getting it right.

“We need to look ahead now to another big challenge against Middlesbrough on Tuesday night, because the games are coming thick and fast. We’re all looking forward to this one because of the special occasion.

“I’m very proud to be involved in it, and I’m sure us and the fans will be able to bounce off each other. The players will obviously be aware of the significance of the night, but I want them focused on the game itself because it’s going to be a tough game.”

Middlesbrough have endured a somewhat challenging start to the 2022/23 league season, with Chris Wilder’s men currently sitting in 18th place having secured their first victory of the season against Swansea City on Saturday.

But with that winning momentum, and a manager rated highly by Edwards, the Watford boss is clear that the four-time second-tier champions pose plenty of threats on the pitch.

Edwards said: “Middlesbrough are a really well-oiled, well coached team. Chris Wilder is a vastly experienced coach, and he’s had huge success so he certainly knows what it takes at this level.

“They’ve got a clear identity, and some brilliant players with a great mix of youth and experience. It’s no doubt going to be a tough game, but I’m sure they’ll be expecting the same and it’s our job to make it as hard as possible for them.”

Finally, Edwards provided an update on some of the players currently out injured, with Rey Manaj set for a spell on the sidelines after limping off with a hamstring problem against QPR.

“Rey will be missing on Tuesday,” he added. “He had to come off on Saturday and he’s probably going to be out for a number of weeks now, which is a shame.

“There isn’t much change with most of the other guys. It’s a bit too soon for Tom Cleverley, Imrân Louza, Samuel Kalu and Jeremy Ngakia, and Tom Dele-Bashiru remains out as well.

“Keinan Davis and Kortney Hause haven’t featured properly yet, but they’re getting there. This game will probably come too soon for Keinan after his illness, but Kortney is in contention.

“Regardless of the injuries we’ll be able to pick a strong, competitive squad, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what they produce.”

index.jpg

Boro fans are invited to the unveiling of a new statue commemorating club legend George Camsell, which will take place this Friday at the Riverside.

The Durham-born striker played for Middlesbrough from 1925 to 1939 and remains the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with a total of 345 goals in 453 appearances. He continues to hold the highest international goals-to-game ratio of any England player awarded more than a single cap, with 18 goals in his 9 appearances, and scored in every game he played for his country.

In the 1926/27 season, Camsell scored 59 league goals for Middlesbrough, which remains a record in the English second tier, while 9 league hat-tricks he scored in the same season is a record across the English professional game.

The statue, which has been created by Sean Hedges-Quinn, is situated adjacent to the Ayresome Park Gates and exisiting sculptures of Wilf Mannion and George Hardwick.

The unveiling ceremony will take place at 7.30pm on Friday 2 September, with the FanZone open and selling refreshments.
Supporters arriving at the stadium via car should access via Shepherdson Way. Alternative access routes adjacent to the stadium are closed due to a 5K running event.

I remember a lovely win there in the premier league under Robson. I think Ziege and either Ince or Juninho scored in a really comfortable win. We looked a class act that season. Some very enjoyable beers in London that night. Ziege was a fantastic player.

The one and only time I’ve seen us win there in person was when Willie Falconer scored that chip over David James - our record there is pretty dire though isn’t it
