The tories weaponising ULEZ

I've just done that. My score is 31 and has an amber label to it.

BUT - I live in the country in Suffolk, 4 miles from the nearest town and on a B road that gets a medium/light traffic flow. So, either this programme is so sensitive that its picking up some local farting pigs or its accuracy needs to be questioned.

Same where I am, proper countryside but it's imperial college London... Oh wait... It's imperial college London, the accuracy definitely needs to be questioned

Imperial College London, globally renowned experts in air quality research, have looked at the health burden of air pollution in London. Their research found that in 2019, toxic air contributed to the premature deaths of around 4,000 Londoners.

seems like a complete no brainer to me..Power to the Mayor. I have grandkids living in London...Fck the naysayers
How many premature deaths do cigarettes and alcohol cause

or eating junk food

are they all banned as well?

They aren’t banned, just heavily taxed. Exactly the same as driving a non compliant car through central London

That’s actually not what the report says at all, London has 10 million people it was suggested that these ten million people would live a few weeks less on average because of air pollution so this was then turned on its head for obvious reasons by the mayor’s office so 10 million possible living a few weeks less was roughly equivalent apparently to 4000 premature deaths or it equated to 4000 average lives which is more accurate

Really happy with my score of 86 where I live............ which is about a mile outside the new ULEZ zone. I'm lucky in that I am right by a Tube station albeit a fair way out, but can understand how this could affect people who need to drive for work. It seems to be a bit arbitrary how they've done it. I would think London_Boro is a similar distance out of the city centre as me but my part of Essex isn't affected.

I think one of the problems they will have is people straying into the zone without realising it or only realising it at the last moment.

Couple of things regarding the ages and types of cars affected; it's not just 17 year old cars that are going to be affected; Euro 6 was only introduced in 2016 and yes most cars from the period just before that should also be compliant if they were coming up to the end of their product cycle could well not be.

As I understand it is 10% of cars that are not exempt rather than 10% of people being affected. They need to maintain this standard for the next decade I would say so that this figure starts falling as it is likely we will see larger numbers of people moving over to RAV's.

One thing I believe that they have got wrong is it going from midnight to midnight. If you go out at 5 to midnight and return at 5 past, going past a camera you will be hit for 2 daily charges.

On the flip side of this of course is making people poorer and restricting their travel (Doctors hospitals carers families) will also have a cost to life but I haven’t heard of any reports on this

Apparently that midnight issue is of concern to night-time workers, such as at Heathrow.
Another thing is that the local councils in the affected areas are refusing to put up signage to warn motorists that they are about to enter a ULEZ area. Bit shortsighted, but I think most of them are tory councils who are still peeved that they lost their legal challenge to the ULEZ expansion.

There has been a fair bit of discourse down here. I think the care industry will be one of the most affected.

There will always be outliers in any big policy change like this.

If anyone was wondering about the 40 years old thing; it's mainly because 40 years old is when cars qualify for the historic tax class which is obviously recorded by the DVLA. I'm not sure whether they work off date of registration though or whether you have registered for that tax, as classic cars may have spent time off the road and been taxed at different times of the year.

How? That’s the risk you have when cars and pedestrians mix, as well as cities having awful air quality which causes so many health issues
There are many other ways to keep pedestrians safe other than just been all cars. What else you gonna ban, bikes? I agree that a pedestrians shopping area is desireable, but that doesn’t need to be very big otherwise people can’t move around it easily

Bottom line is something needs to be done about London's air quality.

Look here:

You can search by postcode, score goes from 0 - 100, lowest is best. I did our address here in Northumberland, score was 7. I picked a central London postcode to check, score was 99.

People should not have to live in that much pollution.
I just put the Lewisham postcode for the high Street in the link. The result was 99.
Lewisham has been in the Ulez zone from the beginning. Does that mean Ulez does not work?
