The team that finish 6th

We did back in 2015, we wanted to play Brentford and didn't try to get a winner in our final game
I am not sure thats true, I think its an urban myth, it would have been a dangerous game to play given they both had the same points and goal difference was very close too I think. Ipswich were about only a goal away from securing 5th spot, from memory.

I am. If you finish 3rd you deserve to go up. If you finish 4th you don't
Not strictly true.

IF the rules were explained that the top 3 go up at the end of the season as they do, like the old style rules except 3 points for a win etc, then yes. But given that the rules DON'T dictate that as they don't, sides will plan accordingly at the end of season?

Consider the following example table of a season, with points and GD going into the final game;

Team A 104 +57
Team B 87 +31
--------------
Team C 85 +30
Team D 83 +29
Team E 81 +15
Team F 72 +12
--------------
Team G 72 +10

With the final day fixtures looking like;

Team A v Team D

Team T (A side who've been down there most of the season yet have hit form in their last 3 games, have roared out of the relegation zone from grinding out low scoring results & need a draw to guarantee safety v Team B

Team C v Already relegated, injury hit Team X.

Team E v Team L, midtable side with their minds on the beach

Team F v Team G

Now aside from the obvious, such as Team F v Team G being the single one game to watch with both sides going on the attack, managers of sides would approach games far more differently than if they knew it was just "The top 3 go up."

Team B for starters have a fair chance of getting a draw from their last match as the side who need a draw to escape relegation could pack men behind the ball.

Team C therefore are going to put their shooting boots on and go for it, as they need to, to have any chance of the autos. They may as well as even if this rebounds on them they'll only drop from 3rd to 4th. Boo Hoo. They'll likely also want to win by a few, in case Team B draw and GD comes into it.

Team E are more likely to win, they're at home against a side with $od all to play for and want to get 4th for the home leg in the playoffs.

Now the crunch question. If you were the manager of Team D, currently sat in 4th, what would you do? If your reply is to go for it, all guns blazing, no guts no glory etc then I'd say that was more than a little naive. Would I balls do that.

With a win, there's no chance of the autos, no chance of anything except finishing 3rd "for pride". And this if Team C fail to beat the cannon fodder at home.

With a draw, you guarantee 4th spot and the second leg of the playoffs (and possible extra time) at home, in front of your own fans. Unless Team E win by 8 goals!

With a loss you let a likely to win Team E jump you and are consigned to 5th, with second leg advantage gone.

Bearing in mind also you're away at the League leaders by far who score goals for fun, have a decent defence and wouldn't mind beating Reading's championship points record! Only a complete muppet of a manager of Team D would set out for the win at all costs IMHO!
However IF it were the top 3 only to go up, ie no playoffs then Team D would I imagine set out vastly different....But it isn't. So they wouldn't.

All results go as is most likely. The shock result of the day is that Team C, leading 2 nil with 8 minutes left to go concede a goal from an individual mistake letting in a player from the fodder who wants to put himself in the shop window and jump the sinking ship. This is followed by a controversial penalty a minute into injury time, yet still they finish 3rd as Team D get the draw they need (though with a win they WOULD have finished 3rd FWIW)

And this is just one example.

Imagine if we don't play particularly well on the last day, allowing Cov to pip Sunderland for a playoff spot.

The mackem meltdown would be a thing of beauty.
If that happens then Sunderland can fu(k off.

Carrick-led Boro have beaten all of Watford, Millwall, Norwich (twice btw), Preston & Blackburn in the second half of the season, including a few thorough spankings to give them a hand up the GD ladder to boot. Indeed the only side we didn't beat in their favour from their direct rivals was West Brom.

Oh and not to mention personally giving them 3 points on a plate by being below par at the Stad de $hit.

We've practically spoonfed them playoff chances as it is. If they decide it's our fault they blobbed it due to us failing to beat Coventry (especially if we have b***r all riding on it and want to enter the playoffs with less chance of injury) then they can just look a little more in the mirror as far as I'm concerned.

Do they want us to wipe their ar$es for them as well?

I would take those 5 and 6ths as they are, we get 3500 from Millwall as an away allocation and 6000+ from Blackburn in the playoffs. If we get Coventry I think they limit us to 2000 after only giving them to 2000 in the final regular game and Norwich, WBA, and Sund will keep us at under 2000. Preston won't give us that end maybe 3500 in the playoffs.
From a football perspective we just have to get our attitude right on the days and I don't care who we play, funnily enough if we get to Wembley their big pitch might suit us and our out wide pacey players.
Millwall is max 3k

I’d be very surprised if Blackburn handed the opposition team 6k.

Not that it matters, Blackburn won’t be in the play-offs.

I think we will go all out to beat Coventry. Can't see us not giving it 100%. Might rest a few if a couple of injuries, but we need to keep the momentum going.

Looking at things the other way, there's not one team who do fancy playing us in the play offs.

Teams who change manager mid-season, after a obviously poor start, tend to fare well in the play-offs eg Forest last season and Norwich when they beat us, to name but two.

That final game against Brighton was probably the dullest game I’ve ever watched.
It was so quiet I could hear Leadbitter shouting to his players towards the end of the game reminding them not to score. We really wanted to play Brentford in the semis. Not sure who we would have played if we had won that game though. [ Edit, it was Ipswich and I think that we had struggled playing them]

I'd rather finish 3rd and play the 6th best side than finish 4th and play the 5th best.
If the 6th team were Coventry on a high after just getting into the playoffs, I would rather play Millwall or Blackburn in 5th. It is the form at the end of the season that counts in the playoffs, not how teams finish over the full season.

I was right next to the Brighton fans and they were singing about having a shot, the progress they’ve made since that game is mad when you think about it.

Every team in the playoff's are a threat to us to varying degrees but surely luton are the biggest threat to us in the playoffs

agreed every team is a threat to some degree or other.

Luton : Powerful team, good at set pieces, can bully teams. That isn't something we handle well, the fitness of Dael Fry would be vital against them. Prefer to play them at wembley, where our passing game will wear them out on a big pitch.

Blackburn : Good ball players, can pass through you. Got game changers in their squad too, who can make something out of nothing. Better to play them over 2 games than at wembley as our better players will have more time to come good. At Wembley someone like Diaz could score a worldie then they shut up shop.

Millwall : Another physical team. Would be tough at their place, but think we would steamroller them at the Riverside. As long as we are not 3 goals down from first game, we beat them. Wembley, they have decent energy, would be a tight game, but think we would come through in the last 20 mins as they tire and make inferior subs.

West Brom : very difficult game for us in semis or final. Lots of experience. They do lack a bit of pace at CM and punch up top, which we would look to exploit.

Sunderland : bag of sh!te, they won't make play offs anyway

Cov : It's all about trying to contain the big man up front. We can score against them but can we actually keep him quiet?

Preston : playing well, like to pass, I just think we are better at that than they are, prefer to play them in a semi than a final though.

Norwich : think they'll miss out, but if they sneak in, they are terrible against the top 8 sides, only 1 win I think all season against the good sides. Prefer not to play them though as again they have some game changers in their side and surely won't play as bad as they did last week again. I guess their season hangs on Gibson and/or Hanley getting fit.
