The Morrissey - Marr spat continues

Am looking forward to the new book “How to completely ruin your legacy as a music legend and turn into a total Cnut” by Stephen P Morrissey.

Absolute bell end
Utterly heartbreaking really love the smiths and still listen to their music. Do you think hes always had the same xenophobic views ie when in the smiths or has he radicalised into a racist pr*ck over the last decade. I almost think he says things for shock value and media attention very much like joey barton

He's spent a lot of time in America.. great place to go to boost your British patriotism and be at the forefront of having anything to say on being British. I would describe him as a militant vegetarian.. I try not to pay any attention what so ever to what he has to say in interviews. I proper love Morrissey.. he's got a bit of the old Bowie about him with his flirtations fascism and love for courting controversy. He's a 65 year old millionaire who has been far detached from reality for as long as I have been born.

Whatchagonna do ey?

Johnny Marr has got a bit of the cool about him playing with younger groups and Noel Gallagher constantly fawning over him..

Morrissey is not a popular figure at all.. lots of bad press surrounding him.

if The Smiths were to reunited Johnny would be Marred

They should do a reunion, could be as good as the recent Janes Addiction one 👶
Def has a bit of the View about it.

Is this a new thing? Bands reunite and then have handbags on stage? We'll know next summer with Oasis I guess, though could never see Marr or Morrissey involved in staged fisticuffs.

Morrisseys music is still decent by and large. Marrs solo stuff is white rice in comparison.

I think there is definitely an element of shock value. And playing to the gallery.

I also think he’s got worse and comes across as bitter and twisted.

I think he always said stupid shocking things for shock value. However when you read a stupid shocking comment in Smash Hits when you’re 14 years old you think it’s funny. Now you’re in your 50s you begin to realise just what a nasty bit of work he is.

I can’t listen to his solo stuff anymore.

In complete agreement with this. He may believe the drivel he spouts or it may be to be controversial - who knows?
But there's one undeniable, his songwriting/storytelling whilst in The Smiths was genius. Add to that the sweeping, melodic guitar of Johnny Marr and you had what is now a back catalogue to rival most.

You only have to look at old interviews of Morrissey to see his journey into bellendism isnt new, he's always been one.

Yep, back to 1986 he's been a bellend, saying things for shock value. For example below, but also see my link for more rubbish from him.
Moz: "Reggae, for example, is to me the most racist music in the entire world. It's an absolute total glorification of black supremacy... There is a line when defense of one's race becomes an attack on another race and, because of black history and oppression, we realise quite clearly that there has to be a very strong defence. But I think it becomes very extreme sometimes."
"But, ultimately, I don't have very cast iron opinions on black music other than black modern music which I detest. I detest Stevie Wonder. I think Diana Ross is awful. I hate all those records in the Top 40 - Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston. I think they're vile in the extreme. In essence this music doesn't say anything whatsoever."

Interviewer: But it does, it does. What it says can't necessarily be verbalised easily. It doesn't seek to change the world like rock music by speaking grand truths about politics, sex and the human condition. It works at a much more subtle level - at the level of the body and the shared abandon of the dancefloor. It won't change the world, but it's been said it may well change the way you walk through the world.

Moz: "I don't think there's any time anymore to be subtle about anything, you have to get straight to the point. Obviously to get on Top Of The Pops these days, one has to be, by law, black. I think something political has occurred among Michael Hurl and his friends and there has been a hefty pushing of all these black artists and all this discofied nonsense into the Top 40. I think, as a result, that very aware younger groups that speak for now are being gagged."

Interviewer: You seem to be saying that you believe that there is some sort of black pop conspiracy being organised to keep white indie groups down.

Moz: "Yes, I really do."

Let's be honest he's scum.

We don't venerate the work of nonces like Gadd, Clapton is vilified for a series of remarks he made when (to excuse the inexcusable) he was in a bad place mentally, Pete Townshend's PC, even Bowie is criticised for his dalliance with Fascism and its iconography. Yet this odious bigot gets a "get out of jail" card for his work with The Smiths.

I really don't get it.

At least one of those you've mentioned are known to have had sex with children, yet they also get a 'get out of jail' card. Same goes for Elvis, Jimmy Page, Axl Rose, Steve Tyler and quite a few others. Bowie is a legend on here.

Clapton's racist rant was arguably worse than anything Morrissey has ever said, yet you've given him a mitigation on it.

Basically, people are more likely to tolerate this stuff the more they like their art.
