The meltdown if we lose

Come on, Chuba Akpom is the No1 striker at the club. Just like Harry Kane is the No1 striker at Tottenham and for England.

Harry Kane plays as the striker for both Tottenham and England.

Akpom didn't play as a striker for Carrick.
In his own words:

"Whereas here, I've been told specifically that I should play No.10 and the gaffer has made me feel confident, so I'm glad I'm playing there and showing my strengths."

We've got Crooks playing in Akpom's position whilst he's injured.
We have Rogers filling in as our striker after so far failing to bring in a replacement for Cameron Archer, who was our number 1 striker under Carrick.

Kane plays as deep for Spurs - and often for England - as Chuba does for Boro. Just because they’re playing deeper doesn’t mean they are not strikers. They are both strikers who have the quality to do other things for the team as well.

Rooney was a striker, Sheringham was a striker, as was Heskey, as is Toney, Rashford… they just play or played in a slightly different way or are as comfortable outside the box as they are inside it.

But to my mind Akpom is the No1 striker at the club. Would be interested to know how others see it too TBH.

Whether playing as a 9 or 10, Akpom is still a striker.

He didn't score 28 goals from outside of the box - he was always in there for crosses once the ball made it into the final third, but he was often instrumental in the ball moving from the back to the final third.

People trusted our recruitment until about two weeks ago because it’s demonstrably improved over the past 12-18 months, perhaps longer. The players who’ve come in are better than what’s gone out, at a better age as well. There is a clear pattern to our permanent signings.
Speak for yourself. For me the jury is well and truly out about Scott.
The signings under Scott prior to this summer for money have been Boyd Munce (gone), McGree, Forss, Hoppe, Clarke, Barlaser.
Only Forss represents a really good buy to me, though I accept McGree has his fans.
The Frees were Smith, Roberts (already gone) and Lenihan.
Lenihan has worked out well.

Tavernier is miles better than McGree.

This is his 4th window.
The 2 loans in January were excellent, but how much of their presence was down to Danks?

I reiterate that the window could still see quality flood in and I know it is difficult as a Championship club.
But let's not say that we are in a good place just now.

Again, though, you have to give credit where it’s due surely. How have we gone from 17th to 10th to 7th to 4th in successive seasons if nobody knows what they’re doing?

The recruitment of Carrick and his staff was a success. We have added some good players over the past 12-18 months. We’ve had four really good players on loan last season. Fry, Hackney and Coburn on new deals. We’ve gone from the nowhere to the playoffs without the advantage of parachute payments.

Surely you can’t just dismiss Scott’s role in anything good just because you nailed your colours to the mast early? Danks did the Villa deals, someone else did Carrick, Wilder got Lenihan… but Scott definitely signed Hoppe. I just don’t think it works like that. He’s not even signing or identifying them is he? Isn’t he just putting the staff in place and overseeing it.

How are you judging success since Scott took the recruitment department on? Because we’ve gone from mid-table to 7th to 4th on his watch. So surely there’s something going on there. It can’t just be someone else doing the good stuff. And if it is, well who hired them in the first place.

And there is also a presumption that Carrick isn’t involved in the process of acquiring these players. Maybe he is happy to go with Rogers. It’s his job to know what the team needs. He will want quality players just like every other coach or manager but let’s just not presume the worst all the time.

I'm not presuming the worst all the time at all.
I posted that the jury is out for me with Scott. I am not however impressed so far and thought his record underwhelming at Norwich
I'm not a big fan of anybody we have signed for a fee other than Forss. Lenihan was a good free signing undoubtedly.
The January loans were terrific.

Carrick and Danks are the factors for me that have transformed us recently.
I don't for a minute think Scott targeted Carrick. I think Gibson had Carrick recommended to him and made it happen.

I am not dug in looking for reasons to criticise Scott.

Warnock took us to 17th then 10th bemoaning recruitment some pre Scott.
Wilder took us to 7th bemoaning recruitment.
Carrick took us to 4th on the back of his coaching/leadership and two brilliant January loans.

Steffen - success
Smith - success
Giles - success
Lenihan - success
Fry - tied down to new deal
Clarke - injured, jury out
McGree - success
Barlaser - underwhelming but plenty of time
Mowatt - underwhelming but actually did well near the end
Muniz - underwhelming
Archer - suceess
Ramsey - success
Roberts - back up goalkeeper, nothing to say
Forss - success
Hoppe - jury out, no idea as I’ve never seen him play
Hackney - tied down to new long-term deal
Coburn - tied down to new long-term deal
Carrick - success
Woodgate / Danks - success

The new batch could be great, good, meh, indifferent, poor, or most likely a bit of a mixed bag. That’s the joy of looking for untapped gems or players who’ve a point to prove or unfulfilled potential.

Just my opinion of course.

Also this will be laughed out of town but imagine Coulson went the same way as Akpom. Or Coburn is actually the real deal. Or Van Den Berg is as good as reports suggest and we’ve picked up a gem for buttons. Who knows what will happen. But we will no doubt be signing a lot of unheard of players in the coming weeks, months and years because we’re trying to move away from paying big money for big names who don’t deliver.

Is this the meltdown thread?

My first problem was getting the bl**dy ground. Got there 15 minutes before KO with my shiny new ST card. SW corner using turnstiles 8-10 queue to get in all the way to the back of the car park. People not knowing how to use the new cards, some cards not working, no one there to help (well one guy covering all three turnstiles) Got in five minutes after KO and as I looked back there was still a pretty decent queue behind me. Get it sorted Boro...

Went downhill from there. I don't think Millwall were any great shakes but very solid at the back I'll be surprised if they concede many goals this season. We had loads of possession but no cutting edge. Few people having a pop at Rodgers but first game at a new club playing an unfamiliar role he gave his all and never hid. We seemed to love congregating on the right hand side in threes and fours near the corner flag making intricate little one touch passes trying to get a cross in for... no fkkker. Well Rodgers and three mahoosive CBs. Our corner routines are still reassuringly carp. Ditto freekicks.

I thought Coulson did well at LB not a replacement for Giles but there aren't many of those to be found.

At least we don't have long to wait before playing again.

There two positives. Oh Dieng looks a good acquisition. Three.

Now I need a fag, whisky and glue and as many mind expanding drugs as I can find.

Why, oh why oh why do we do this to ourselves and pretend its for enjoyment?
