The Last of Us TV Show

I was thinking about this thread after watching ep5.

I feel like the relative lack of zombies in 3 and 4 made it all the more startling and scary when the zombies did come piling out the ground in this one.

Yeah I would agree with that. A feeling of helplessness as well as with such a force coming out there isn't a lot you can do about it. I think that's where a lot of traditional "zombie" stuff falls down as they're only really a threat if you are surprised, surrounded or cornered, else you can just walk off 😂

I loved the way they came out of the hole in the ground too. That moment of suspense was brilliant, especially when you knew they were coming.

I think its great how well they're blending the game with doing their own thing to replace the fact you cant have episodes full of joel and ellie killing random infected, joel looking for other ways around to get to ellie, scavenging for a few bullets etc.

Just watched episode 4 and 5 tonight having been away. What a treat, especially episode 5.

The Henry and Sam storyline is one of my favourite parts having played the game so to see how that story was told was just brilliant.

The whole truck sinking into the ground and then the emergence of the infected really took me by surprise and was genuine jaw dropping moment, especially the bloater! I didn’t think they would include bloaters but what a treat to see them.

My only gripe was the sort of slow-mo/speed-up they did on certain attacks? It kind of took me out of the moment briefly.

Half way through this latest episode I was expecting to be posting saying I might give up on this as it was all very slow again and I am struggling to really invest in the characters in a big way. But the second half of the episode was very good I thought and a lot of stuff is starting to make more sense. I am over halfway through the series now so I’ll definitely finish it, would hope there’ll be some very exciting stuff to come in the last few episodes of this season.

I’m gonna stick my neck out (again) though and say that I still haven’t really understood the relevance or the brilliance of episode 3, even with hindsight.

Without frank you tess and Joel don’t meet bill

Without frank bill doesn’t fall in love

With falling in love bill doesn’t do his romantic suicide

Without the romantic suicide the car key isn’t given

Without the car key Joel finds it harder to go across the country

It gives context to the story as a whole

Fair enough. Think I’d missed the car key thing. Didn’t feel entirely integral to the plot. Anyway, I’d like to think there’ll be a bit more action now. Especially now we’ve met a “bloater”.

Not in 28 Days Later, or World War Z. I wouldn’t say fast zombies are a new concept, I think the mushroom stuff over their eyes is like.

28 days later and world war Z are from 2002 and 2013 (same year last of us came out) and in terms of zombies are relatively yesterday for a genre that predates even the first surviving material, White Zombie (1932) and featured in a play over 100 years ago. World War Z best forgotten for how badly it craps all over the source material. Zombie and post apocalyptic stuff is my favourite genre. Plenty of examples of zombies being fast well before those movies - Nightmare City/City of the walking dead from 1980, even Night of the Living Dead in 1968 had zombies moving quickly and even using tools.

I didn't say that Last of Us invented fast moving zombies - But majority of zombie stuff is slow shuffling walkers and its hard to have any sense of dread or fear from things you could just saunter away from. 30 walking dead style zombies would be something to keep away from. 30x 28 days later/world war z/last of us infected you've got almost no chance against.

So there’s clickers, there’s bloaters, are there any other types? Is there a “standard” infected, and how do you progress to clicker or bloater?

Could be spoilers there as haven't read it

Time.
The longer they're infected, the more the fungus takes hold.

The clickers and bloaters have been infected for significantly longer than the standard infected, which are the majority of those we see.

Fair enough. I assume you become a clicker then a bloater afterwards.

It’s a really good watch especially if you haven’t played the games I feel, the games are so much better which tells you just how good they are. I still feel Ellie has been cast incorrectly, if they do a depiction of the second game I don’t think it will work IMO.
