The Last of Us TV Show

I'm not offended in the slightest it just seems you're in an uphill struggle to enjoy a show which is getting tons of plaudits and trying to trivialise it by suggesting all the good reviews are written by the gamers. It just doesn't seem to be the show for you from your posts.
I was just making the point that reviews are irrelevant to me. Something having a good review doesn't mean I'm enjoying it more (or less), nor does it mean I'm wrong, its just opinions, no idea what drives those opinions in most cases.

I wouldn't say its an uphill struggle, I enjoyed the first couple as it looked like it WAS going to be a zombie apocalypse show. Last week was a decent piece of TV but it is definitely veering away from what I *understood* to be the premise when I started watching it.

There doesn't HAVE to be zombies, but that's what I thought I was signing up to, so whatever this show is really about or whatever story it is trying to tell hasn't really hit home with me yet. Maybe that is easier to understand if you've played the games, or maybe some reviewers just praise everything HBO do cos its HBO, other people's opinions could be held for all manner of reasons.

So far, my own is that the show is decent but I'd like there to be a bit more excitement/suspense, I've outlined why above.

Hope that's ok with everyone. :)

Out of interest, if the game isn't about zombies then what is it about? Isn't it a first person shoot em up like Doom?

The Last of Us is a 2013 action-adventure gamedeveloped by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Players control Joel, a smuggler tasked with escorting a teenage girl, Ellie, across a post-apocalyptic United States. The Last of Us is played from a third-person perspective. Players use firearms and improvised weapons and can use stealth to defend against hostile humans and cannibalistic creatures infected by a mutated fungus

Ok that's the blurb, so in my interpretation the game would be mostly about shooting hostile humans and creatures infected with fungus. There hasn't been a LOT of that the last two episodes.

combat isn't a huge element of the game. It's part of it but mostly it's stealth; interaction, problem solving and storyline. Using a gun will often get you killed because there is more of them than you and the noise attacks more. Even if you do try play that way, bullets are extremely limited and weapons break quickly and hand to hand combat is almost a death sentence

It's survival game, it certainly isn't a shoot em up

This the point though a game require gameplay.

A tv show requires character investment.

I mean I suppose the could have reacted a 20 hour play-through….

If I’m honest, what I wanted was something that would stand up against the excitement/action of the early seasons of TWD
I want to see a few zombies getting shot in the face or their heads getting hacked off with a piece of piano wire if I’m honest.

It's just not really that sort of thing from what I remember of the game. The bits with the zombies are more about tension than action. The zombies can't see so in the game there's a lot of manoeuvring around them without making noise. Most of the action, as in this weeks episode, is when the characters encounter other humans.

Fair doos.

Maybe I should play the game. Do I need a playstation or something?

As someone mentioned, it seems that those who have played the game understand the premise and are more invested in the show than those who haven't. Those who haven't, such as myself, thought we were getting a bigger budgeted TWD type show and we're not so maybe feel a little let down. Those who are fans of the game, are loving it, the characters, the easter eggs, the comparison to the game etc whereas those who havent played the game are seeing a zombie show with little or no zombies, and it feels a little slow and i think maybe they're catering for fans of the game a bit too much over the general public.

I think it depends on your expectations, we knew what to expect going in. You seemed to be expecting a walked dead type of show and it was never going to be that. Not sure if they marketed it as that as I avoided everything before the first episode.

There’s a podcast I’ve listened to for years that are covering the show, only 1 of the 5 have played the game but they all really like the show.

It is a Walking Dead type show, well the later series when the story was slow and not much happened!!

I am enjoying it but I also think it is a bit slow. I have never played the games and really had no expectations going into it about the required level of action etc.

For me it feels like HBO are dragging it out to make more money.

I'll keep watching it but it really does feel like the people who are going crazy over it are all fans of the game.

There is a reason why so few games have been adapted and that is because the gameplay that makes a game good can't possibly be replicated as a story. I've never played The Last of Us but I had always heard how good the story was (and I have heard very little of the gameplay itself) which is why there are/were higher hopes for this adaptation succeeding.

This is too binary a view, this show is huge, on one of the biggest cable networks, and is getting near universal acclaim and every week is increasing its audience numbers. You simply can't pass its success off as "they all must have played the game".

Websites that track tv series popularity and ratings are currently almost all showing this in the number one slot. This just wouldn't be happening if people weren't invested in the show, my dad certainly wouldn't be texting about it as dont think he has played a game since the spectrum 48k.

Someone asked above, chappy maybe, about how it was marketed. The trailers rely heavily on dialogue and story

You see the infected only briefly

If anyone want to watch the game being played there is a let's play of the remaster here

I'm actually playing the game at the minute on PS5. Bought it last week on the back of the series and the reviews I'd read. I'm loving the series, and the game helps tell the story. There are a lot of differences but also I'm finding that both series and game fill in some of the gaps.

I've only played it a bit though and up to about the same as where the series is at. Bloody nightmare trying to get out of the hotel though.

Just started as couldn`t wait to binge watch....tried but failed

Played both games extensively so nice at the start to see the touch with the watch and a little introduction to the neighbour before the inevitable outcome

Episode 5 was class

When the bloater turned up it showed exactly why it isn't zombies 24/7 because one or two are largely dangerous but a horde of dozens with a bloater added on top to boot would be a nightmare.

Really enjoyable episode and sam and Henry were great. There's a trailer for episode 6 and looks like they reach Jackson and catch up with Tommy

Put it as a link as the screenshot makes it obvious 😂
