The Jubilee

Not a royalist
Agree, I actually hope that we stop being subservient to the 'need' for a Royal Family BUT after several lockdowns, a start of proper world depression, A war which could escalate quite easily into a global conflict I am going to put my hypocrite blinkers on and enjoy the coming days , to be part of a release for whole communities , and a coming together of people.. Bring on the Bunting!

Haven't you heard. You aren't allowed to be proud to be British anymore. Especially if you are white, middle aged, have a wife and two kids and a steady job.

My kids are celebrating the jubilee at school today with a non uniform day, encouraged to dress in white, blue or red or a mix of all three.
The village is holding two events next weekend, Saturday is a mini summer fete and Sunday people are invited to bring a picnic or sample food from a multitude of different businesses (including the one I work for) whilst catching up with friends and family.
Good post, agree with all that

Why do people falsely equate not liking the monarchy with not liking the UK? It's such a mad conclusion to come to. Especially when people explain why they think the monarchy is holding the UK back

There wouldn't be a United KINGdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland without a monarchy.
We can still be British. The island will still exist. I guess we'd be the UR. But what's in a name? Czechia have been called 3 different things in my lifetime and I doubt its had any material effect. Apart from losing Slovakia of course. North Macedonia have had 3 names since 1991 yet nothing has changed there. Happy to be part of the United Republic

Two can play.

Why are people automatically assumed to be flag shaggers when they say they are proud of been British and don't have any grudges against the monarchy system?

There will ALWAYS be people in this world born into a, for example, a more financially secure and socially higher position than others. Wether that's princes or princesses, children who have famous actors as parents, people who stand to inherit vast fortunes. It's just the way it is, I tend not to lose any sleep over it. Would I like to be a part of the monarchy? Probably not as it's far too much attention and living under a microscope. Would I turn down a vast amount of inheritance money? No I wouldn't. I'd welcome it.

I can understand Corcaigh's hatred for the royals, hom having Irish connections and all. Love them or hate them or just ignore them, it doesn't matter, they aren't going anywhere unless every branch of the family passes away at once.

Well, well, well. I didn't think I'd see a Stewart Lee style, "These days, if you say you're English you get thrown in jail!" in the wild. ;)

Hey, if you want to wave a flag and eat trifle, knock yourself out. No skin off my beak. I might eat a coronation chicken sandwich, and I'm not very pro-Royal. So sue me.

"Being"

I assumed nothing. I saw you response to an anti monarchy post with you saying they weren't proud to be British. No assumption was made. It was a direct reaction to what you said
