The Hundred

Young Parkinson said at the end of the Oval innings "It was chaos out there, the players didn't really know what was going on at times".
I watched and thought it really poor.
Different to T20 but not enough to be better or different enough to warrant the effort.
I hope it falls really flat and the ECB has to withdraw next summer and address T20 in England.

Colin Graves' biggest mistake I think.

Good that they're expanding though might broaden the appeal.
Interesting how cricket continues to evolve.... Test Cricket > One day 50 overs > 20/20 > The Hundred

And football?

and doesn't require a huge amount of explanation if you're not familiar with cricket.

Meh, from me.
It's fundamentally exactly the same game- wides, bowled, caught, fours, sixes, etc are the same. I really don't understand the concept that It's easier to understand.
On a footballing comparison it's like reducing each half to 35 minutes instead of 45 but everything else is the same.
Ps i forgot to mention not being given out lbw if the ball pitches outside leg.

I find the bowling hard to follow, t20 has something for most cricket fans of different levels, this just seems too frantic and unfullfilling. Not enough time to craft even a short innings. Hard to tell who's got what left to bowl etc.
I interstate test cricket isn't commercially viable but T20 is.
I could accept a t20 franchise but this is a step too far.

Christ and I thought I was miserable
You are right AET. I don’t think this new format goes down well at the moment with the majority of this Board’s demograph.

I was unable to watch last night but have just watched most of it on a highlights package I would echo most of what has been posted re the graphics

I'm not a regular watcher of the women's game as the poor quality fielding usually puts me off- the batting, 'keeping and most of the bowling is fine

Read the reports in the media this morning and they are quite different from each other

The first by an un-named BBC reporter and the 2nd by Valkerie Baines of Cricinfo
One might think that the BBC report was written by Tom Harrison

“As opening nights go, The Hundred's was surely as good as organisers could have hoped for.

A record-breaking crowd and a thrilling win for Oval Invincibles over Manchester Originals only told half the story.

As the match reached its thrilling climax, a noise alien to English cricket stadiums went around a ground.

Not 80s classics sung by well-oiled fans or roaring chants in support of the home team.

Instead, an excitable, rhythmic clap.

A young crowd was fixated not on the half-time music acts or fireworks, but on the sport unfolding in front of their eyes.

But, for a format billed as an opportunity to engage a new audience, this was an encouraging start.

The crowd was undoubtedly younger and more diverse than those seen at men's internationals, or in the current Twenty20 Blast.

In total around 7,400 people attended the game, a number believed to be a record for a women's professional, domestic cricket match anywhere in the world.

A large number of those were given away free - but when the object is expanding in the game, does that really matter?”

“Upon arrival, there was the familiar buzz of any well-attended cricket match, slightly surprising given the hype surrounding the first-ever match of the Hundred, between Oval Invincibles and Manchester Originals. The demographic filing in early were also the same as you'd see at any other fixture.

There was "ooh-ing" and "ah-ing" in the right places during the on-field action, suggesting that those watching knew why they were there as opposed to brand new fans who had never seen the sport before”

I gave it a go. Simply not for me.

It's not overly the cricket but more so the constant banging on about 'how great it is'. It's like a nearly 3hr commercial for a product.

The cheesy jokes and constant laughing. What the f*ck are the avitars and lego emojis about? I feel for Rob Key taking to an avitar that's not even next to him😂. Never mind what they've done to poor Stuart Broad. One of our greatest bowlers chatting like he's on a game show.

So I decided to try BBC and was instantly met by Chunkz (who I only know from his moaning at soccer aid about being called 'a big fella'.... He is and his and he calls himself Chunkz).

Then the final straw was 30 seconds explaining what a bouncer is. 'its a ball that's bowled short' and 'it's fast and risky as could be hit for 4'......thanks for that😂

I guess it may have an ordinance (kids / families) . I just don't get the need for it as its a poor version of T20. I would say if they do stick with it then hopefully they will tone it down a bit on the build up and commentary.

I really enjoyed both matches. I watched the BBC coverage the commentary team were great, I’ve always had a soft spot for Tuffers.

The biggest change is the move from 6 ball overs to sets of 5 or 10. The fact that the bowlers change ends after 10 balls rather than 6 does add more drama, especially towards the end as it makes it more difficult to keep the lower order batsman off strike (unless the better batter is smacking boundaries).

Having lived all over the UK, I don’t have any real affiliation with a county side, but I can see if you did, that might be a problem.
I used to live quite near the Oval so I shall be cheering on the Invincibles.

It’s great to have cricket on the BBC at prime time.

Indeed. It's not aimed at 'us'. My comment upthread that Chunkz was there was meant to be self-deprecatory tongue-in-cheek stuff in that until that moment I'd never heard of Chunkz. And I'd never heard of the performers at half-time either. Still, I watched the first innings (it's probably not called an innings) of each game, was moderately entertained and, to be honest, preferred the women's match. I also enjoyed watching the fireworks out of my front window. Tufnell and Vaughan, though? No thanks.

I love cricket and enjoy watching Test/4-day, 50 over and T20 formats. I go and see England & Durham regularly and have been on several overseas tours watching England. It’s very clear that this format isn’t aimed at me or existing cricket fans.
The reality is we really don’t need another format but if it’s used as a gateway to get kids and families interested in the sport then I can see the ecb’s thinking.

Fully agree. It's a 'dumbed down' format that actual cricket fans will moan about (me😂).

It's no skin off my nose. I've tried to watch and probably won't watch again. That said if it gets more people interested then fairplay.

Then again its often hard enough getting an England ticket as it is. Its definitely not short of support. Cricket has taken off over the last 10 years.

I was trying to think if I was as negative and critical of T20. I probably was. I now love it.

Anyone new to cricket and watching this will have no interest in the longer formats, ie 50 over & Test matches.

I refuse to watch it. It's just more dumbing down of the game and to watch it is to encourage its growth.

I’m watching it again, still can’t get into it..although this Emma Lamb is some bowler in the women’s game - surely she must be on the verges of the England team - 13 balls 8 runs 3 wickets so far 👍🏻….and best of all i can hear the wicketkeeper calling her by her nickname - Legga 😁😁
