The Hundred

Went to Headingley today with my 14 year old lad to see for myself.

Good seats, two games, two wins, excellent atmosphere and cost £30. An enjoyable experience.

Booked another match and it’s even cheaper, £20 for both of us. It’s just a tweaked T20 really so if you like that I don’t know why you wouldn’t enjoy this.

Yearby if and the kids enjoyed it then that's what it's all about, we have to adapt ot die 👍

I've not been to a live match but on TV on BBC and Sky it's unwatchable due to the terrible graphics and the overhyped repetitive commentary.

I don’t think it’s the format of the game they are using to atttact non cricket fans it’s the whole presentation and the marketing. There were loads of kids in that crowd last night. I think they are using music and DJs and had Becky Hill playing during the interval. For the benefit of anyone over the age of 30 she’s a pop star…..

Plus it’s on the bbc so you don’t need sky to watch which can only be good.
They did that with T20 at the start. There was music and DJ’s and hot tubs. They just started cutting it all. The rest of the world get T20 so why can’t we?

They could put some T20 games on BBC that’s not an issue. The Blast has been so badly mismanaged by the ECB over the last few years it’s a joke. If they wanted a tournament to fill that gap in for kids in the summer holiday, that’s all The Hundred is, just have The Blast. Market it right and we’re sorted. The Hundred is pointless.

There is nothing in The Hundred that I haven’t seen in other formats. However, because BBC have some rights it’s like cricket has just been invented. Northern Superchargers don’t play further north than Leeds. Way to cut off a potential market.

I've slated it on here. That said ive dipped in and out watching matches when nothing on.

The game itself is no better than T20 but hey who doesn't like seeing 4s and 6s. I guess anything that gets fans in is worth it after the last 2 years.

The one thing that hopefully gets toned down is the OTT commentary. It's proper cringy at times. Some of the 'banter' and 'jokes' 😕. Also sky telling us every 5 mins how amazing it is.

I agree with some of the points raised against it, but you don’t get the commentary at the live games and it was good entertainment.

Of course it has a certain target audience but there were loads of families and lots of young kids (both male and female) there yesterday and getting an audience for the game is surely a good thing. Plus like I said it was good value for money.

I’ve watched most of the games so far and it’s been good. Although I love the T20 also and it’s jus the same really with a few tweaks.

the graphics are embarrassing like.

The big difference is that you get just one match on at a time so you focus on it like a footie game rather than the T20 where you get half a dozen games on.

it’s just a clever marketing deal more than anything but if it helps gets kids involved then I’m all for it.

the northern thing is winding me up slightly although we do have a couple of the Durham lads in it.

that Brook is a defo one to watch.. very good cricketer for his age

But surely you just watch the team myou support.

Find it difficult to get any enthusiasm for Northern whatever they are when Yorkshire players are playong for teams against us.

Well I managed to support the Superchargers despite there being Durham players in the team ;)

I genuinely don’t understand the hostility to this.
Because it is being excessively promoted as something new and exciting when it is essentially T17, and nothing new at all. The ECB could have spent the money used to promote this on improving the Blast.
I don't think the hundred will catch on internationally as other countries will look at it and see that it offers nothing that T20 doesn't.

I’d have thought as a cricket lover (which I assume you are) you would welcome any new innovations that gets kids into the game.

I do, but they could get kids into the game through T20. Kids play that at youth level so why promote something else?

People keep mentioning about families going there. Do families not go to T20 Blast games? Clubs offer cheap tickets for kids and families for that. It’s all moot points.

They’ll bang on about massive attendances but when they’re (matches) being played exclusively at the main test grounds it will look bigger than the Blast.

A restructure of The Blast would’ve been great. Group matches or something at the start, then knock out games and finals day in the current format at the end of the summer and you’ve got a summer holidays tournament for kids. Matches could’ve still been shared between BBC and Sky and that’s that.

Plus, it was only a few years ago the ECB got rid of the Pro 40 tournament because of too many games and what have they done? Brought back a fourth tournament when there’s already a call of too much cricket domestically and internationally. ECB are a bigger basket case than most Championship clubs.

I definitely think the double header format, including a woman’s game, is a good idea. Encourages participation and the cricket was good.

The format is a bit gimmicky I agree, but it works. I liked the idea of counting down and bowlers being able to bowl 5 or 10 in a row.

Both games yesterday went to the last couple of balls and were good entertainment.

I'd agree that encouraging kids to play is great but surely this is done at grass roots level not at test grounds. I'm concerned that this new format will fizzle out and ultimately prove to be a big waste of money. I hope I'm wrong.

That’s the thing, plenty of games do. It can happen in any format. You would think it was exclusive to The Hundred.

Theres been plenty of crackers in the One Day Cup this week, Durham v Glous for example, but due to this competition you wouldn’t think it happened.

Also, Michael Vaughan’s commentary is awful.

I know they can.I’ve been to County Championship matches ( barely a few hundred there), one day matches, T20’s and Test matches. I enjoy a day at the cricket with my son and we both had a good day yesterday. The format worked in my opinion.

Plus you can’t hear Vaughan when you are there. Bumble did have a rather natty jacket on though.

It's not aimed at us old fuddy duddys...its to get kids interested in it and promote the women's game, and it's doing a brilliant job of that!
I wish you'd all stop moaning about it.
Don't watch it if you don't like it, but don't stag it off imo.

I wanted to dislike it, it’s contrived with made-up teams, and all Yorkshir’s best players are playing elsewhere…however it has been entertaining. 😀
