I genuinely think the club leaked it to the Gazette to gauge public opinion. If it had been accepted by the fanbase I think he would have been appointed before the weekend. Surely if it was going to be Cattermole he would have been appointed by now?

I think we give ourselves too much credit at times. Only my opinion though, obviously. I just can’t see the club conducting a recruitment process and then gauging public opinion before deciding whether to go with their findings.

Surely Cattermole would’ve been in ahead of Leo for these past few games. That said, I can see Leo being appointed TBH. That wouldn’t really surprise me.

You say that but plenty of journalists were quick to claim we were interested in Gary O'Neil until the reaction from the fanbase, at which point he was no longer under consideration

Doesn't necessarily have to be directly from the club higher ups.

We're getting the teams leaked every match right now, largely accurately, there are clearly people within the club who are happy to spread information right now.

Yeah I've been thinking it's weird that Dom Shaw has been given the shove and hardly contributes anything towards the Boro content now, I wonder if it's anything to do with what happened when the club banned them before?

I noticed the Northern Echo has (seemingly) let go one of their writers the other day, Matthew Jones. He was often at the Boro press conferences.

Dom now works across the whole region for Reach (Gazette and Chronicle) and co-ordinates all the content for both publications and digital platforms.

I can imagine him being given until the World Cup. Not sure I see it beyond that. May be different if he’d taken us on a winning streak.

All newspaper groups (I think it's Reach that own the Gazette) are cutting costs as their profits decline. I too noticed the disappearance of Dom Shaw who was supposed to be head reporter of Boro news. Now we're down to Craig Johns whereas only a few years ago there were four reporters. The poor guy probably gets paid a pittance, yet is constantly criticised and is expected to do the job of four - I don't envy him one bit.

On Cattermole, I think that was just a stupid rumour run rampant and sports reporters will follow any lead with no fear of litigation if they get it wrong. It also wouldn't surprise me if Cattermole helped the rumours along as a means of taking the pressure off Leo - Leo certainly had a smile on his face when asked directly during the presser. Now I'm just starting rumours - might as well as everybody seems to be at it.

EDIT Several posts appeared while I was typing this - must get faster.
 
The days of relying on newspapers and even their websites for the very latest news are long gone.

Their offer these days is opinionated articles predominantly fielded for click bait ads.

Their hacks seem to spend most of their time trawling about twitter for a lead.

I was told by a good friend, who has no reason to lie to me, that Cattermole, who is friends with his son, had told him he's got the job. I'd also been told that someone in Cattermole's family had said it's all total rubbish that he's even being considered. So, in short, I am not ITK, nor do I have a clue.

Same. Can’t say what I’ve been told but I believe he is actually under consideration. I really hope the reaction ensures he doesn’t get the job.
 
I love threads like this, TBF. So many people who’ve been told stuff and yet there’s never really anything said before anything actually happens. There’s so many bets being hedged on a daily basis at the moment.

I think Ryan Giles is the only one of a dozen or more signings made this year that was posted on social media before it’d been reported in the press, which was apparently because someone knows his Dad.

That's what I don't get. If he is about to take over why does he spend 90 minutes slumped in his seat with his hands in his pockets, as opposed to Liddle who spends 90 minutes offering Percovich tactical advice
