The front 4 problem

Just out of curiosity, what is Alex Gibert’s role supposed to be ? Isn’t he a forward , named on bench and not sniff so far, but we bring Crooks on though let’s face it won’t really bring anything special.Popular and pleasant lad but not a promotion winner for me.
Forss is decent and proved his worth last year , McGree can be wonderful in flashes but can be inconsistent. In Silvera we have an exciting player who also might be very frustrating- composure is what he needs to have coached into him. All that said - I believe most will expect we get at least one more forward in before months end.

For me it’s Lath upfront with McGree, Rogers and Forss behind him. They are our best players and with those on the pitch we stand a chance. Silvera and Jones to replace the wingers when needed.

What I thought was telling on Saturday was that carrick brought Crooks on to play 10 when we have Payero on the bench. Shows to me that MC just doesn’t fancy him.

Agree. It's certainly what I'd start with.

Very very early days but am optimistic Lath will make a big difference. He looks a right handful and will scare most defenders to death with his pace and directness. That should give the 3 behind a bit more space to operate in.

Re: Payero. MC might well not fancy him, but I think a big issue is he doesn't really suit the formation. Better in a 3 man midfield and we don't play that way obviously.

Think when he signed Gilbert said he was an attacking midfielder/deep lying forward. So basically another who'd play in the 3 behind the striker.

Brentford wanted to keep him, so he must have something about him. Possibly still injured a bit or not quite doing it in training yet? Who knows.

Our front 4 problem is solved by playing with a front 3

Rogers/Silvera - Lath / Coburn - Forss / Jones
Plus we have Gilbert at some point.

This then solves our defence problem by allowing us to have a screening midfielder in a midfield 3

McGree / Payero - Howson / Barlaser - Hackney / Crooks

Rogers/Silvera - Lath. Far too inexperienced. Not convinced by rogers at all

Think Forss picks himself because he’s good and Rogers is the only natural fit at 10. Toss-up McGree and Silvera on the left.

Fair point above though, we played with a 10 last season because Chuba was so good at it. If our best player isn’t a 10… do we still need a 10 or could we do something different?

I think the thing that I disagree with here is the idea that everyone has a position they can play.

You have skills and attributes and a coach that puts you in a position to use those.

Fans want to coach like football manager/fifa where every player has a listed position and they lose attributes if you play them elsewhere.

Try things - coach them - find a winning formula.

There is that. Why force a formation on the players we have. Unless that’s exactly what carrick wants to play then he should look at playing a 4-3-3 or 4-4-1-1. We certainly have players to fill those positions better than the 4-2-3-1.

Thing is they do. Chuba spent several years making a mediocre attempt to play the #9 role. We tried out Rogers as a #9 and he showed no sign of being able to play it. Crooks can come off the bench and make a nuisance of himself anywhere but if playing from the start he's pretty much a #8 or nothing. RVDB can "do a job" at right back but shows nothing to indicate that he can be a permanent first choice at Championship level there.

The best players can play multiple roles at their level —Jonny Howson can play right back, centre back and midfield—but most can't.

Of the players we have presently, only McGree has any sort of track record as a #10. Rogers, Silvera and Gilbert all grew up playing left wing. Forss and Latte Lath are both #9s but have played wide right with some success in the right set up.

Of all the new signings, Rogers is the one who has class, who will develop, but needs to play 10.
I'd like at least a look at Gilbert.

Class players show it immediately. Bamford did, Ramirez did, Archer, Ramsey. The way they can take a ball, make vital space, their vision, their technique.
I think Rogers has that sort of class and look forward to watching it emerge.
