The curious case of the missing LB

Strange one.

Bola, solid LB, nowt flash, been a good pro at Boro is allowed to leave.

However, no replacement brought in and Coulson - the man who out did Chuba for shock Boro comeback of the decade - ends up getting the job.

Wondering whether there was truth in the Giles transfer story - he agreed the deal, then changed his mind when Luton offered more. Missed alternative LB targets pursuing him and are now left short.🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

LB desperately needed.....amongst a few positions.

Sure we will bring a LB in.

Nothing against Coulson, just find it strange we've been left in this situation starting the season.
Thought the same. I was staring at his name on the teamsheet having thought he’d played his last game for the club a year or so ago, thinking “how is he now our first choice left back, even temporarily?”

He didn’t actually impress at Aberdeen either.

I’d love to see him do well but it feels like this isn’t his level.

I didn’t think this thread was so much about how Coulson’s performance today compared to McNair’s, but more about the situation we find ourselves in having to bring a player in from the doldrums with literally no other options.

The Coulson situation is really strange you'd have to admit. Two full seasons on loan at Ipswich, Peterborough and Aberdeen without impressing at any of them. Then gets his contract extended and ends up as the club's first choice (and only) left back.

It's bizarre!

I must have been watching another game to some. I thought Coulson struggled to impose himself and lacked confidence. I’m not sure he is a Championship player.

McNair at right back wasn’t great either. He combined to a certain degree with Forss first half but was ineffectual completely second. His decision making for their goal was poor too. If you slide in like that take the ball or the man.

I think Woodgate will have had a huge influence on the decision to extend Coulson's contract. Woodgate was the one who saw potential in him and gave him a chance initially. I wouldn't be surprised if he sold the idea of Coulson getting another chance to Carrick, and Carrick chose to put his trust in Woodgate's judegment.

As for the situation with Giles, I mentioned before that it reminded me of the fiasco we had trying to sign Greaves from Hull last summer. We put all our eggs into one basket trying to sign Greaves, and when we finally accepted he wouldn't be signing we ended up with Clarke, who I'm sure wasn't one of Wilder's top targets for the LCB position.

After missing out on Giles, I'm a bit worried we're now going to end up signing a LB who Carrick doesn't actually rate.

Exactly what I was trying to say! It’s bonkers. Regardless of the fact he did ok today. I hope he continues to improve and becomes a mainstay in the side, would love to see it, but it doesn’t feel likely.
