Sycamore Gap - Hadrian’s Wall - felled 😡🤬

Seen on Facebook:

The Sycamore’s Lament

Do not weep for me
A sycamore tree
I knew this day would come
You who have visited me
Shared your love and grief with me
My roots are still here
Though my branches are gone.

Come and stand for a while
And you may still hear
The wind playing soft through my leaves
As the birds sing their song
Of an old tree’s lament
Where I stood over 200 years.

Everything changes
All beauty must die
Or wither and fade or decay
And man must destroy
What he loves most in the world
Through anger, or greed and dismay.

So do not forget me
A sycamore tree
A symbol of ancient folklore
Remember a place where a great tree once stood
Now a gap with a Sycamore
No more.

Very poignant

There’s more than a 16 year old who’s done that, that’s a profesIonal job with a massive probably Stihl chainsaw.
Perhaps we can get Norman_Conquest to turn a few baseball bats out of it for when they find the culprit’s.

There came the day day we found the tw@t
And gave the fcuker fifty whacks!!

16yo is taking the wrap for / protecting someone much older imo.

It’s just beyond words. Really, I can’t even begin to put an expletive to it, that s how far beyond my comprehension such an act goes. Just utterly disgraceful and senseless.

If he’s local, people will know him. He’s going to get a hard time anyway, probably.
Have a look before the news cycle moves on.

Disgusting and absolutely pointless vandalism.
I hope I don't get hate for saying this as I'm just trying to find even a slither of A positive, but I hope they turn the felled tree into small plaques/awards and have an award given every year for people who have gone above and beyond in positive actions for the environment, it obviously doesn't replace the tree but at least the timber will not go to waste and can be used as a positive.
In regards to the location and if it is feasible then it would also be good to save another mature tree which was due to be felled and replace this one with it(I don't know if this is even possible with mature trees).

There's more to come out about this. Can't see a 16 year planning and executing this alone.

Think the theory about some disgruntled landowner/farmer fed up of people walking across his land (or parking on or near it?) to get there might not be far off. People can get very protective and then irrational about their property.

It's just such a weird and unusual target even for mindless vandalism. Granted sometimes people are very strange, but just seems it's more likely to be some sort of motive other than just mindless spite at the world.

If that theory's right, then once all the facts come out I think there's going to be an awful lot more people taking that route out of spite. And whilst I'd never encourage littering, feel free to think about it...

he's going to have to live with the shame for the rest of his life - he's always going to be "the person that cut the tree"
Prisoners serve their sentence nad start again.

I suppose there is no coming back from this

Rumoured the lad was sacked from national trust (where he learned the tree felling trade).
So he's learnt tree felling and had time to get sacked all by the age of 16! How young do they start them? 😳

As I said above though just feels like there has to be some sort of reason for the target, so maybe not far from the truth. 😔

I guess if he's from a rural or farming background he may well have learned many skills from a young age and have access to all kinds of tools and machinery.

I suppose a good example of this would be Amanda & Clive Owens kids at Ravenseat Farm who were all very hands on at the farm from a very young age.

I'm sure the story will unfold in the coming days and hopefully those responsible will be rightly shamed.
