Spain back on the UK banned travel list

Personally I wouldn’t take risk in going to mainland Europe for a holiday at the moment but I do understand why people would and the governments announcement is badly thought out and poorly timed.

You only get one go at life and no one knows what is round the corner. If we all lived life in our little containment, then life would be a sad place with no one trying anything new. You are just as likely to catch it at home than abroad. I’m in France for the summer, if I have to self isolate on my return, then so be it.
We all received the nod to travel and countries welcomed us with open arms. The goal posts have moved slightly since then and we will deal with it.
Will you expect to be paid if you're quarantined when you return?

I can’t fault anything you said there and applaud your thinking. I have also stopped going to the pub, but did this two years back- I still have a few pints on match days, but are reluctant to spend my full weekends in them anymore. Again, I used the lockdown wisely and furthered my education. I don’t think I have done too bad for someone who refused to attend school. I bet my teachers wouldn’t have thought I would work in one - I didn’t.

My holidays changed about eleven years back and I spend 6 weeks in France. The last five years in the same spot and we have been viewing houses this time. I am hoping to retire here shortly.

This morning I’ve been out on my mountain bike in the countryside and will get the boat out on the lake this evening. We will anchor up, fish a little and catch the last of the evening sun.

We will return after a few hours, shower and have an evening meal on the front.

I might do the same tomorrow, but never get bored of this 😊.
Have you got a tandem?

Helen Whateley, Junior Health Minister and latest schmuck to be rolled out to defend the ban this morning just been on my TV. She isn’t impressive at all is she.

I thought she was quite good. I don’t understand the criticism of the policy, people were quick to condemn the gvt at the start of the pandemic for a slow response so I’m not sure why they are now been criticised for rapid decisive action. I have a holiday booked and I booked it on the basis there was no certainty I would go, given the world we live in I can accept that and the inconvenience it may cause me but understand if it’s for the greater good then it’s a small sacrifice to make.

I don't think the policy is the issue. They stated these travel restrictions/ changes will fluctuate multiple times.

I feel for anyone who has been impacted by it on any level and would encourage anyone looking at holidays to be thorough with their insurance over the next few years- whether through credit card bookings/ or full travel insurance. Also seeking advise from your employer can be useful to mitigate the risk- some may be more willing to be flexible with working from home/ supporting quarantine than other if it is required.

If i didn't have family commitments I would have booked up a holiday in a heartbeat, but the risk unfortunately of being trapped in a country/ having to isolate is currently too high for me to take.

This isn't going away, will likely be worse come flu season so if you want a holiday why not have a holiday but be mature, and expect that these changes may come into play and prepare accordingly.

Surely the risk is much lower there than here at home?

That's because you're a Fat Cat with money to burn. Not everyone is in the same boat, not that I'd expect everyone to notice to that.

The government have bullshhtted there way through the virus, can't expect anything to change in that front.

I really wish they would. I know the Balearics are only a couple of hours by ferry from Barcelona, but so is Perpignan and nothing stopping people going there and flying back.

The French are asking citizens not to travel to Catalunya, not enforced yet but I'm sure they will close the frontier again soon.
I saw in another thread some of the board users in Southern Spain were blaming the return of British tourists for the spike. Make no mistake, this rise in Catalunya has nothing to do with British tourists coming back because they never started coming back here, it has more to do with locals flouting the rules and packing the beaches, also opened up night clubs and bars way too early, with nobody wearing masks.

I don’t expect, I know I will.

My concern is not being on holiday, but spending the winter with 1250 eleven to sixteen year olds and not being allowed to wear a mask. We don’t want to frighten your little cherubs.

I work for Infosys and they have a full department dealing with covid around the world. Right now I am not allowed to travel for work either within the UK or abroad. My current project is in Poland with ABB. They also have a travel ban.

If I can't travel for work, I would have thought there was some sense in not travelling for pleasure also.

I spoke to my wife this week about a break in the UK this year. She thinks it would be spoiled by the restrictions in place so isn't keen.

I am going to spend the holiday money on some nice garden furniture and a patio heater instead. Oh and a wardrobe apparently.

Why should you expect to be paid - people knew the risks when booking Holidays - it shouldn’t fall on the employer, yes if possible they should try and accommodate home working etc but I don’t believe they should be financially impacted by your decision to book a holiday (non essential travel) during a global pandemic.

wholeheartedly agree!! he says knowing I would be paid as I can and do work from home ;)

Hi Coraigh, the nickname is simply that - I wish I did have money to burn but I honestly haven’t, booking sensibly I’m sure I will get most of my money back In the event covid prevents me from going.

my point was simply that it feels at odds to criticise the gvt for acting too slow and then for acting too fast - surely it’s one or the other.

Wondering if you'll be spending more than a day a week in school?
