Some not very nice chanting last night

Very disappointed to hear this. It would be a much nicer atmosphere in the ground if the energy put into offensive chanting (and barracking of sometimes our own players) was instead used to encourage the team.
I mean.. as much as I disagree with the sentiment behind the chanting.. it is football... offensive chanting.. we can't be doing away with that.. we need to be more offensive if anything.. just not like that.

Isambard Brunel? You're aving a laugh.. (born in Portsmouth)

Who the fcuk is francis bacon? (Westminster I think.. not Chelsea)

Agatha Christie is fcuking *****! (born in Torquay)

Fcuk Thomas Crapper... i'll shyt in the street (Born in Doncaster)

Chelsea People?????

I had to explain it to my 12yr old (and then again to my 14yr old after the game who sat with my dad). That was an awkward conversation. There is a hell of a lot more we can berate them lot for, spunking about a billion quid and getting beat off what was a pre-season friendly Boro XI being one of them.

I agree 100%. What makes the football atmosphere so different (and special) to other sports is the back and forth between home and away fans. The majority of songs that are sung are positive songs about our own team but there has to be a bit of winding up of the opposition. It obviously shouldn't be racist or homophobic but there should still be some banter.

I go to more away matches than home matches and I always smile when I hear our fans singing "X is a **** hole, I want to go home" knowing full well the opposition would sing that at the Riverside as well because everyone thinks everywhere is a **** hole.

If you try banning every song that is offensive to someone there'll be nothing left and the atmosphere wouldn't be what it is now. I get that people take kids but it can either be an environment where kids are protected and don't hear bad language and offensive behaviour or it can be an opportunity to teach them that there is a time and a place to stand up and shout at strangers and a football stadium is one of those times and places (as long as it is just harmless banter). I have been to hundreds of matches over the year and I have had a lot of fun singing in home and away ends without even a hint of violence. I wouldn't want to lose that. I know Liverpool had a bit of a backlash against teams singing "Feed the scousers, let them know it's Christmas time" because they feel it is making fun of poverty and they find it offensive. I'd say that seems very different to homophobic or racist chanting and is much more light-hearted.

I know it s difficult and you have to draw the line somewhere but deciding what is and isn't offensive and then getting 1000s of people to top singing it is probably a losing battle for the most part. There will be lots of people that don't think things are offensive and there will always be someone who thinks everything is offensive so there is a balance to be had somewhere.

I'd agree that it's impossible for all noise to be completely positive , child friendly, and not offensive to someone somehow.

Just needs more creative thinking for some insulting / pizz taking...
And there's plenty of material where Chelsea is concerned..

They're glory supporters and don't support their local team.
They've a crowd full of tourists.
" You're just visiting, you've never lived here "
" Town full of Tories" ( although Londons not, Chelsea is )
Etc

the thing that gets me about Boro fans and the “town full of rent boys” chant

Isn’t over the Border in Middlesbrough the prozzy capital of the North? It used to be when I lived in Boro 25 yrs ago.

Must be a few rent boys amongst them.

Just a thought.

I heard it more from the south stand.. our loudest stand.. it was from OUR fans at the end of the day.. need to take collective responsibility.
You're right we do need to take collective responsibility and I would suggest that people calling it out in this thread are doing just that. However the post I responded to suggested that the chant came from all quarters of the ground, it didn't. That is collective blame and in my experience that equates to injustice and I'm not having it.
I should add that although I heard it from the South Stand I can't say it was that loud which suggests it was from a minority of morons.

it sounded like it started as an automatic response.. then a few people thought about it.. then it just stopped. I'm all for ripping the opposition with chanting etc.. but that's a bit old hat, it's naff, it's had it's had and is homophobic.. we can do better.. we can be much harsher!!

Does chanting things like this really hurt anyone? Yes it may be offensive to some. But whatever you say adversary is seen by some to be offensive these days. Just suck it up and ignore it. It only becomes a problem when you take it home from the match and still feel offended. Give over acting so precious.

It's just the thin end of a wedge innit tho.. why go homophobic? It's like playground stuff in the 80s.. got a girlfriend? urrgh.. ya big gay!

Yeah but it doesn't hurt you though. You know you're not a rent boy just because you support Chelsea and you know you're not a peado because you support boro. You still go home after the game and their chants don't change who you are.

Surprised at that from you mate. The thread is full of parents who didn't know how to explain the chanting to their young children. It's more than offensive, it's disgusting. We also have gay people as supporters and who post on here. How do you think they feel, should they just 'suck it up'?

No, but some young lad struggling to come to terms with their sexuality a boro fan.. hearing being gay being thrown around as an insult.. not so good.

I mean there's loads of things that happen that are not good that don't affect me or hurt me directly.. doesn't mean I shouldnt talk about it or say that I don't agree with it.

Do I want my club to be labelled as being homophobic? Nah Do I want boro fans to be put off coming to games because of their sexuality? Nah

I mean.. fans NOT singing town full of rent boys would not effect you or harm you in the slightest. I got the feeling last night that most fans singing it thought it was a bit naff and knocked it on the head.
