Silvera

You see I don’t mind people offering balanced views like- “needs time to settle in” “ “looks a bit out of his depth at the moment“.
But let’s not pretend that’s the kind of thing a lot of people were saying. It was rubbish like “stealing a wage” “worst player I’ve ever seen” “league two at best”. They’re all direct quotes.
Completely over the top unbalanced knee jerk nonsense.
This.

Also it is worth recalling that it wasn't as if we had much in the way of choice, the squad was pretty threadbare due to injuries and late arrivals yet even though we kept losing we were making (and admittedly missing) quite a few chances and a couple of the goals we conceded were "wonder strikes" or horrible scrambles in the box.

The table was lying 😜

Fair bit of revisionism going on in multiple threads. Not pointing out any particular posters, but there was a general feeling that the recruitment team had done a bad job and we had a squad closer to relegation than promotion.

Now that has changed to, they were thrown in at the deep end, too many newbies starting together. At the begining of the season I think there were 3 posters saying this, and only 3.

Worse still board members were calling carrick a liar and one poster, using the misquote from einstien, suggesting that he was mad.

The whole thing was unedifying and it was done under the guise that it was OK to voice your concerns. Some were doing just that, plenty were hiding behind that.

To be fair, the form only changed when Rogers and Silvera played a lot less minutes. Only Engel has proved to be decent over a run of games, and it's a short run

I'm pleased for Silvera, took his goal well and really hope he kicks on.

But, I'm not going to get carried away. His early season performances were poor, and those against Blackburn and Sheff Weds were utter, utter dogsh*t and deserved to be left out of the team. Came back against Bradford and although slightly improved was still poor.

As with Engel he needed taking out of the firing line, good management by Carrick (although I would argue this could have been done sooner as he was clearly struggling).

Apart from the goal, did okay last night In a thankless position. Worked hard. Can he do an Engel, back from the dead and look like a Championship player? Hope so. But let's see.

That was my view

Turning points in a season

I honestly think silvera will come good he just needs that confidence in front of goal as his positioning and movement is good.
I’m delighted for him great goal.

Exactly. They have all looked better coming into a winning team. A few posters suggested getting back to our experienced core of Championship players, which seemed to do the trick. My issue earlier in the season was that Silvera and Rogers, while having potential, were getting picked ahead of such as Jones and McGree. On the fleeting cameo last night Silvera looks like he may be more suited to an Archer type role than one where we are needing him to track back?

It was too much too soon and they were just floundering week after week but taking them out to see how we play and slowly introducing them has been a revelation, now they have confidence and look different players, it’s great to see.

I do think silvera could be the best of the bunch as he clearly loves to have pop has pace can take his man on.

Great times

I remember commenting after the Bradford pre-season game that Silvera had good attributes but was very short on confidence. Hopefully that goal will help build his confidence.

I don't think this is, necessarily true.

All the new players have shown plenty of ability, whether that is from the bench in games we have won, or when strating and we were playing fairly well and just not taking our chances. Only Engel has proved decent over a run of games? You really want to stand by that comment?

We lost so many games early doors because we were defending so poorly.

It wasn't just the new lads that caused the problems, it was a combination of several things. Need I remind everyone of the slaughtering both McNair and Fry took at the begining of the season?

Carrick repeated after every game that if we continue to do the right things results will come. He may well have prefferred to keep the new lads in the firing line but they were being destroyed on the pitch and on social media by fans "showing concern".

Yes I still want to stand by that comment. When Rogers and Silvera are playing well over a sustained period of both minutes and games then I'll change my mind.

Rogers scored the winner on Saturday, only because he made a complete hash of a simple ball, Coburn did it right last night. Silvera scored a good goal last night, other than that he hasn't done a great deal. They both look like reserves being given a few minutes to rest legs.

Some posters are just impatient which is what I said at the time they wanted instant success with a dozen new signings which was never going to happen.

Kieron Scott is a fraud isn’t he? 👀

The revisionism on here of late is staggering to be honest. You’d think you’d imagined those threads that littered the board after the first few games, particularly on the night we played at Hillsborough. A lot just seem to either pretend they didn’t say it or pretend they meant something else. Some of the stuff that was posted was absolutely appalling.

Going off the past couple of weeks’ worth of threads, you’d think the barrage of dog’s abuse aimed at the players, the staff, the chairman, Woodgate, Scott and Bausor hadn’t even happened.

I try not to judge players too quickly because there are a few examples where initially players didn’t look good enough only to mature in to very good starting/squad players. There are also examples where they have turned out not to be good enough, something that is inevitable in the approach we are taking with recruitment. You could apply those same mixed outcomes to a number of very expensive players on high wages we have signed over the years so I believe the approach is right. I did think too many were thrown in too early this season, whether by necessity or not, and goals conceded can be down to a number of factors which isn’t necessarily all about defence. Great to see Carrick stick to the formula and hopefully now be able to slowly transition the likes of Rogers and Silvera in to the team

I remember yourself and I getting pelters at the start of the season over our views.

You said only engel has had a decent run of games, right?

Dieng, O'Brien, Greenwood RVDB. They have perfoemed well when asked, wouldn't you agree?

Rogers is the only Boro player to have a league and cup goal + a league and cup assist this season.

I made the mistake in not giving Akpom a second thought before his great season last year - completely wrote him off and I was wrong.

None of us should be doing the same with Rogers, Silvera, Gilbert, or whoever we sign. The recruitment team have been right more often than wrong over the last 2-3 years.
