Second favourites now for promotion

(after Leeds) Not sure if that was the case before Saturday.

Just over even money and odds on to finish top 6. I'm genuinely quite optimistic but I'm not sure there is much value there :ROFLMAO:

200/1 to be relegated

Impossible to look at it objectively but trying to do that....

We have controlled most if not every game we have played so far. Lapses in concentration in both boxes have cost us. We have a load of CBs to come back from injury and LL and Conway yet to hit their stride. I suppose the thinking could be we have a hell of a lot of growth potential.

Or, we could say we’ve played Derby, Portsmouth and Preston, who will not finish top 6 and not beat any of them.

They were always the kind of sides we were least likely to beat, especially early in the season. Feeds into every "Typical Boro" hoodoo going. I'm amazed that we beat Cardiff given their start tbh, that would ordinarily have been a nailed on $hithoused 1-nil to the home team usually.

I think, because no one is really storming it, the bookies are looking at who is the strongest and who could strengthen in January. We fall into both of them.

In theory we should be right up there.

Tonight's game is intriguing. In form we will beat them. But Carrick never has and they are a decent Championship team. But with the likes of Rav, Doak, McGree, Lath, Hackney and Morris we should be able to see off pretty much anyone.

But tactics, brain farts and luck always come into football so we shall see

Corbaran is a nuggety little ****. Wouldn't surprise me if he sets West Brom up with a low block against us tonight with no space in behind.

I often think this is a ploy from the bookies as the favourites never seem to get promoted. I know it's not but it still doesn't stop me thinking it.

On paper we have the squad capable to win the league but the games not played on paper I just hope we have turned the corner now and we start to show that we can win this league by going on a run.

At the start of the season.....I thought any team finishing above us would be going up! I thought this season is our best chance for promotion since relegation.....

.... Seven games in....... The naive optimism is waning a little..... We have the habit of finding ourselves on the wrong side of close matches which seems to be a difficult habit to break. Top six is achievable..... Top two..... Not so sure at all now :(

I did a little looking back to see where automatically promoted teams were after 7 matches in recent seasons.

I expected reassurance that their promotion credentials weren't established at that point.

However, the majority were in the automatic places already, and the rest were in the play offs.

What comfort I found was, for example, when Burnley dominated the division, they had 12 points after 7, so only one more than us. This, though, was good enough to be 3rd at that point.

I thought we would finish top 2 before a ball was kicked and I've seen nothing to make me change my mind on that.

After 7 games the xG stats, for and against, indicate that Leeds and Boro are the best teams in this division. Granted we haven't delivered the results to prove that yet, but if we keep dominating games, creating chances and giving little away, the results will improve. As that happens and the likes of Lath, Conway and Azaz score a couple of goals each, their confidence improves and so does the finishing and again the results.

Add to the above the fact that we have quality centre backs to come back into the fold, as well as Howson and Forss, plus the potential improvement in young players like Hamilton and especially Doak, and I think the case for automatic promotion is very strong.

We'll see what happens, but I know a West Brom fan who isn't confident in their promotion prospects and I'm quietly confident we'll get 3 points tonight. If that happens, we'll be even shorter in the betting this time tomorrow.

Would you not expect us to have some of the best xG stats against some of the worst teams in the league? Problem with stats is they need context and the context in our case is that we've only played Sunderland as any team of note and we've fallen short. Tonight's performance will help paint a more clear picture.
