Scotland v England

Technically it’s a friendly yes, but I hope Gareth takes this opportunity to test his best line up on a hostile environment against an opposition that really really want to beat us. As it’s been these crunch style games they we have struggled with in the past.

This is perfect chance to practice for next year in Germany snd dhow our inner steel.
we've done pretty well in 'crunch style' games, we hadn't won a knockout game for years, or a quarter final for 26 years or a semi for 52 years before southgate came along.

That said, yes, he shouldn't use this to mess around with the team, needs some experienced heads on the pitch to control and dominate the ball. The scottish team and the crowd will be right up for this match, it'll be very, very hostile and a very difficult game. A draw wouldn't be a bad result, a win would be a superb result. They've beaten Spain. Denmark and Ukraine at home recently, they're a good side....would be great to put them bacl in their box though

So what are the benefits of playing Maguire, Kane and Henderson??

I wouldn’t personally play Maguire or Henderson, but I suppose from Southgates perspective, it’s not your usual friendly this evening. he’ll want to play his full strength team, which from his point of view may include all three of those players that you mentioned.

It’s prime example to treat as a must win game as we haven’t won in Scotland for 10 years and we haven’t beaten them in our last two meetings.

Our last meeting was awful as well

I'd play Maguire, not sure about Hendo though, legs have gone a bit although the only other CM who is strong off the ball is Philips and he's not played, so..

Steady on Mart, I am a scotsman.

Totally agree about Henderson.

He has totally lost it, and although he had more ability than some give him credit for, most of his game was about running. He is nowhere near technically good enough to justify his place now that his legs have gone.
He's 33 and playing in a micky mouse league now. No point in him being in the squad, let alone on the pitch.

Southgate is too negative with his team selections.

I'd like to see us go something like this tonight...

...................Ramsdale

Walker...Colwill...Tomori...Chilwell

...Bellingham...Rice...Maddison

...........Saka...Kane...Foden

No doubt we'll see Pickford, Maguire and Henderson all start though...

Two problems with that, no experienced organiser at the back. You are asking Rice to do a massive amount of work when we are out of possession. I see this a lot, fans clamour for as much attacking talent as possible on the pitch, then complain when we get torn open on the break. These are a capable side, we can't just go gung-ho

That's a massive discredit to Bellingham and Maddison, who are both capable of getting back and defending, as they do for their clubs.

Also a discredit to Rice, who was West Ham Captain and has played a lot of games for England now. He is very much an experienced organiser. He's not 21 anymore and new to the squad.

well I hope you have a terrible evening and cry into your f....n porridge in the morning.....after that, we can be mates
Ooooh trash talk. Can't eat porridge anymore, high blood pressure. I think it will be a tough game for England. At least Jedi will have more ammunition to toss at Southgate this evening!

I don't think it is, none of them are specialised off the ball players, they put the effort in, but spotting danger, getting on passing lines, calling to instigating the press, halfing the pitch, awareness of runners, these are not the key skills of any of those midfielders. Someone has to be the wave breaker and with that midfield three it's Rice, and he'll be doing two peoples jobs at times. They're al good players in their own right, but is Maddison really known for going back towards his own goal? Is Bellingham? Is Rice good at tracking runners? IMO thinking Maddison and Bellingham and even Rice are good enough out of possession is doing a disservice to the art of the CDM.

In my footballing lifetime (I am too young to remember 1985) England have only lost 1 fixture to Scotland and it was a tie they won on aggregate. It should always be seen as a 'big match', an opportunity to get one over on our nearest and oldest rivals, and I hope we treat it as such.

I was at the game at Hampden in 1985 and can clearly remember Richard Gough's header. I was in the Rangers End wearing an England shirt and surrounded by Jocks when all the trouble kicked off in the Celtic End. I quickly pulled a jumper over my shirt with everyone screaming to kill the English. A guy next to me told me to take my jumper off and that I would be OK because I was wearing my colours. Sure enough, I was.

The atmosphere before and after the game was brilliant and in every pub I went to wearing my England shirt, I was bought a drink.

I had gone up a couple of years earlier and hadn't worn my colours but my mate had and he was treated like a king. I always said if I ever went back I would wear my colours.

So what’s the drill, wearing England colours is ok amongst the Rangers fans but not the Celtic fans? Surely you don’t wear an England shirt amongst a load of Celtic fans?

Is there always a Rangers and Celtic end at Hampden?

I was at the game at Hampden in 89. We stayed with my uncle in Stirling and while we were walking to the ground my dad said to me that if anyone says anything to you, just respond with 'aye'.

I just remember Hampden being very run down and we lost 2-0 with goals from Bull and Waddle.

Incidentally game was played the day after Arsenal beat Liverpool 2-0 to win the title. Imagine that happening now?

Just looked at the attendance and apparently it was 147,400!!!

Edit: Never trust Wikipedia. Attendance 63,282
