Scotland v England

An international manager/ first team coach will never be deemed to be fantastic until their team wins a major trophy.. it’s just the way..

I personally rate Southgate’s tenure as one of the best in my 50 odd year life time but it doesn’t excite me the way El tels did…

Bobby robsons itallia 90 team played dire football but still excited the fans…

I think it all comes down to how exciting individual players are in the squad..

We don’t have a gazza, butcher, robson, beckham etc we do have a Bellingham and foden who are world class as is Kane... but their personalities are not sparking excitement… even grealish who does have that playboy persona divides fans because of say, his diving in domestic games or his (perceived) look at me attitude..

Then there’s Gareth him self.. he’s portrayed as someone who could bore the knobs of a bed post.. I personally have thought he was managerial material since he became spokesman for the team during euro 96… and was gutted when it didn’t work out for him at the boro… obviously being nice doesn’t win respect from a majority of England fans..
Personally phil foden hasn’t fulfilled his potential. The fact he isn’t guaranteed to picked for club or country to me makes it difficult to rate him as a world class individual

Ok, I agree there but he is one player singled out for press attention quite regularly…
He may not be classed as world class but I believe he has the ability… may be he wouldn’t walk into any team but that because there are a glut of excellent players who can fo what he does 🤷🏼‍♂️

In a 4-2-3-1 would Lampard and Gerrard be selected as a midfield two?
No, but that’s beside the point, if this is a comparison of those squads they played centrally together and often as a pair in the middle. The key point is a squad is about formation, tactics, mentality, culture, attitude, and much of this is dictated by the manager. The previous managers just didn’t do as well as Southgate with such great talent at their sisposal. They had poor formations, picked square pegs in round holes, fell into the trap of picking the best 11 technical players and ignore other aspects of the game. They could not resolve the club culture conundrum and int act players retired early rather than want to be involved.

You can guarantee that if Foden, Bellingham and Grealish are playing regularly for England as the 3, the switch and bait of “why won’t Southgate pick Rashford, Maddison and saka” will ramp up in the press and social media….who would ever want to be England manager, it’s a thankless job

I agree that he has all the qualities to be world class. I think once he gets consistency he will be a world class player

I wouldn’t say garbage but he’s way behind James, seaman, shilton levels. Decent with his feet though and a good character

Way behind James? Never man. The most erratic keeper England have ever had against a keeper who has played about 70 times for England without hardly ever making a single mistake. If England had have won that penalty shootout against Italy it would have been Pickford not Donnaruma who was player of the tournament.

Pickford has saved three penalties in tournament shoot-outs as well. I think England went years without a keeper making a save until Pickford did so in 2018. I might be wrong about that, but can't remember Seaman saving a penalty in Euro 96 or France 98. James didn't save any during Portugal 2004 or Germany 2006.

But he didn’t win it and comparing him to donnarumma is rediculous

He absolutely has not made plenty of mistakes for England.

You could list the mistakes he's made for England on one hand.

Everton is a different story, but he's been largely faultless for England beyond a handful of incidents.
Yeah he hasn’t made big mistakes for England, but he hasn’t made many worldie saves either. He’s just a bit meh, but like I said good with his feet generally

Off the top of my head, that save he made against Columbia late on, tipping it away for a corner, which I believe led to the equaliser, was a great save.

Pickford is by far our best GK from the current crop. It's not even close neither.

Pickford isn't even a great GK, it's just the standard of GK's we have currently are so poor.

I'd still have Pickford over James though. I thought David James was hugely overrated.

Seaman is well clear of them both though.

Yet people on here couldn’t wait to dig at Southgate for throwing Maguire under a bus for bringing him on for guehi. I’ll add that to the top of the prejudices insults pile on top of “can’t believe he plans on playing Philips as a fullback” 😂
What about tomori the one who never played a minute despite playing for Milan or colwill why was he even there if not trusted in a friendly.

There was no excuse for playing maguire in that game.

I don’t keep them jotted down tbh, but I know he has made several over course. Sure he made one in the semi against Denmark but it didn’t result in a goal
He's made thousands of world class saves, but if you ask for me to show you them, unfortunately I don't keep them jotted down but I know he has made several over course.

I’m sure the England goalkeeping coach ranked him 3 for shot stopping technically few years back when discussing Henderson pope and Pickford

Pickford is eccentric, makes mistakes. Better choices are available imo
