Schwarzer - Christmas Cards at Boro

Looking at English players we had at the time who got a lot of yellows. 4 names stand out

Gazza, Ince, Parlour and Mustoe.

I don't think Mustoe would be the type to do that. I'd be gutted if it was.
Wouldn't be surprised by any of the other 3. Probably all thought they were bigger than the club.

Andy Townsend? His family definitely lived away because there is that story about him taking a cup home with him from the house share he had with Gazza and it not being on the cup tree hitting Gazza's OCD so hard he drove down to get it back.

edit : in the 1998-1999 season townsend got 10 yellows and Gazza got 13. Mustoe got 8 yellows and 1 red.

I would be surprised if there was anyone apart from Emerson - who deliberately got booked at Bury. It was such a shame actually because he was playing so well that season. But it was the last straw for Boro when he came back late. Everyone knew that he had done it all deliberately. A friend of mine tried and failed to mitigate on his behalf when he returned.

I'm struggling to think of a Brazilian that was with us long enough for Schwarzer to say they did it every season around carnival time except Juninho

Wouldn’t be able to tell with Keith O’Neill as he was rarely fit…..no one’s mentioned the first Noel (Whelan) or everyone’s favourite gypsy….Dean Windass.

One of the top replies on is from someone asking Schwarzer if he ever has anything nice to say about Boro. It might be wrong but I do feel that despite being with us so long that he’s generally quite negative about the club.

He was a bit of a miserable git at times with the kids wanting autographs after his warmups too.

He’s another who I think left with a bad taste in his mouth, mainly about Keith Lamb, but he does have a point because letting him go and trying to compete with Jones/Turnbull was a daft decision that ultimately played a big role in us losing our consistent PL status.

I get that feeling as well.

I get what you mean but he did eleven years with Boro and played 446 games. He was a top-class goalkeeper across that time. And yet he was regularly criticised by supporters, booed on at least two occasions I can remember - one for having the temerity to be a much better goalkeeper than Mark Crossley - and left without a testimonial ever being as much as hinted at by anyone around the club.

Do you not remember the noises and murmurs inside the stadium, and general stick he used to get whenever the ball was played back to him or he came out for a cross. I fully see why he may not be gushing with praise for Boro tbh. Some of our supporters are absolute morons. Singing Zenden used to be sh*te, signing we’ve only got one player to Tuncay, booing Schwarzer when he was brought back in for Crossley. Absolute morons.

He was the best ‘keeper I’ve seen play for us, we’ve had nobody anywhere near as good since and are unlikely to have one anywhere near as good any time soon imo.
