Schwarzer - Christmas Cards at Boro

He was with us a very long time but the first name that came to mind was Paul Ince. Otherwise you’re looking at Vickers, Mustoe, Fleming, Ehiogu, Southgate et al and I don’t see those players doing that. Not sure I see it Ince doing it tbh. And not sure why I’ve bothered to post this because I have no idea who he means.

Plus Pally, Cooper, Stamp, Merson, Gascoigne, Hignett, Summerbell, Stockdale, Harrison etc., quite a few English lads on the books...Fleming isn't English

He could well have meant British Isles, I dont expect he was thinking about each individuals passport when making that comment.

However having said that I cant see many of the players like Mustoe or Cooper doing it, and some of the young lads would be desperate to impress so I can't see them doing it either.

Gazza and Stamp would be my guesses, but who knows.
 
If I get the time this evening I will look at our Boxing Day/festive fixtures over Schwarzer’s time with us to see if anyone is missing from the line-ups. Keith O’Neill is another possibility. Not English obviously but as has been said I would imagine Schwarzer means British/Irish lads who indulge in a few pints.
 
I would have thought loads of players would get booked on purpose so they can have a rest. I imagine with some managers it is much easier to get a suspension than to explain you would prefer not to play with a niggle and a bit of rest would be nice.
 
A shortlist: O’Neill, Stamp, Gazza, Townsend, Cox, Blackmore… Moore? Any more for any more? I’ve thrown a couple of new names in there as well. Townsend and Blackmore enjoying the extra curricular stuff isn’t exactly a secret. Might be harsh on Townsend though, he was class for us. Ray Parlour? Again, though, do you play that long at Arsenal if you get booked on purpose so you can go out and get hammered over Christmas? I always felt like that group of Arsenal players just played, trained and drank hard. They did it on the pitch first and foremost.
