Scathing attack on government Covid-19 response

That's hardly the best measure though is it? What's more important is the proportion of the population you're testing. The criteria for testing are also extremely important. As mentioned, if you're not testing health care staff even though you know they've been exposed, you're running the risk of accelerating the spread of the disease.

If you rank countries by the number of tests per million, the UK falls to 17th place.

Where’s China? 🥴

Almost comical reading the start of this thread when compared to the end.

Our first case was confirmed on January 31st and up until last week the laughable notion of herd immunity was being floated, unquestioned by a national television journalist, as the solution. Now we have the "option" of staying in while pubs and such can remain open for the only reason that Boris Johnson is in the pay of insurance companies who would foot the bill should the government force closures. These closures will come eventually as the number of cases skyrocket but not until they force he government's hand.

This is an unmitigated failure of leadership and has allowed the particularly stupid to believe it's not a big deal. This will soon change dramatically.

i would nationalise these private companies selling tests for 300 odd quid to make them test peole for the good of the country not their bank acc.
According to the Metro- Jhoots Pharmacy in Birmingham - charging £19.99 for a 200ml bottle of Calpol and £9.99 for a packet of paracetomol. The owners should be dragged to nearest prison.

Even though we have belatedly been forced into action, our measures are a long way from those being proposed by the USA (as per post 242) or other countries in Northern Europe.

The US measures, I have no doubt, were not drawn up by Trump, but because he is going to have to fight an election soon he will be only concerned with the optics and how this can be portrayed to the American public in November.

I wonder if the Conservatives had an election looming, rather than 4 years of untouchability do to first past the post, how much more they would be prepared to do right now.

<sigh> yet another consequence of brexit, ultimately. :(

What is comical is people like yourself use a forum for your information instead of watching the news yourself. The Government has already said that pubs can claim on insurance and don’t need to wait until they are forced to close.

You cant change a contract between two parties by government decree.

Unless ordered to close then you couldn't claim in in insurance unless the insurance premium specifically states that you can independently close to avert a public health crisis of your own volition.

It seems like the news and govt advice changes daily, sometimes more often than that. You can’t catch every bulletin.

the Chancellor addressed the concerns about insurance after this article. I wonder why the mirror hasn’t done a new article about the new information?

if I was so up in arms about something that I was accusing someone of taking a bribe I’d look into it more

He only said that companies with pandemic insurance will be covered. The government advice was as good as mandatory. Most companies don't have this insurance.

"Let me confirm that, for those businesses which do have a policy that covers pandemics, the government’s action is sufficient and will allow businesses to make an insurance claim against their policy," he said.

So if the government forced the companies to close because of the pandemic will most companies have the insurance?

No, most haven't. All the chancellor said was that if the business has pandemic insurance, insurance companies would pay out even though they closed voluntarily.
So the insurance companies wasted there money bribing Boris Johnson
