Scathing attack on government Covid-19 response

Again it's just somebody wanting to make this into a political attack on the government and The Guardian who have made this political from the outset they should know better.

There is a reason why one is the chief medical officer and he is the former regional director of public health for the north-west of England.

I know which one I'd be wanting to take advice from to help the country counter the virus best

Just for measure Professor John Ashton is a member of the Labour party to boot

Guardian article........ they're hardly going to publish something that would say the government are doing a good job
I'm not saying the article is wrong by the way but has to be tempered by the fact it's a very left wing rag

Are every other country in the world Labour too? How about the WHO? They vote labour too? Reminds me of when the UN published reports into the UK treatment of the poor and the disabled .. the government response?? "Nah" .. Guess the UN vote labour too .. Profit over people .. Vote Tory .. Jesus .. even Trump is doing something .. he best buddies with Corbyn?

A man of integrity unlike our CMO who has rolled over. Hopefully the admonishment by the WHO of our pathetic response will shame this government to do the right thing.

What the government should have been doing over these last weeks, which they’ve thrown away, is to encourage neighbourhoods, communities, supported by the local public health directors and a joined-up NHS.

“They should have been encouraging people to have their own family plans about how they will maintain the family show on the road, who will be taking the kids to school, how do you entertain them in the Easter holidays? They should have been much clearer, sooner, about making it clear that people shouldn’t be travelling so they could cancel their holidays and get their money back on the insurance.

“They haven’t done any of that. Who’s going to look after elderly people – stop them having to go out, do their shopping for them? People should have been doing that planning – they should have been pointed in that direction by the government. There’s been no discussion about that at all.”

- I can’t really see what more the govt could have done as this seems more about nit picking and point scoring rather than a constructive alternative.

A Very odd article

I was surprised they allowed the Spanish supporters in to Liverpool's game yesterday considering Spain has cancelled the next two rounds of matches..

with a slow but steady growth in confirmed cases I think our response has been right - give people the information on how to help reduce risk: good basic hygiene & watch for virus hotspots within the country & take action appropriately.

Jump too soon & people won't take notice. We are an island & I do think that has helped a little, especially with other nations stopping people travelling, by default we've had reduced tourism.. without the need for direct measures..

I anticipate a peak in numbers though hopefully if people continue to go about their lives - with much more care & consideration - we can hopefully avoid panic & protest..

Correct Zorro it is a very odd article. He is a member of the Labour party and its a way to have a pop at the government. Trying to mix up hysteria and panic when everyone should be keeping calm and listening to the advice from the chief medical officer not the former regional director of public health for the north-west of England with a political itch to scratch

"He is a member of the Labour party..."

Bit rich coming from you, Coops, it's not exactly lost in the mist of time that you were trying to pass off an ex-Thatcher fanboy and Tory party member as an independent expert.

You're turning into a parody of yourself. Or something.

I don't think Boris Johnson has the capability to go to a shop for a packet of paracetamol and when you combine that with Dominic Cummings' input, it is very concerning.

Saying the guardian isn't left wing is a bit like saying the daily mail isn't right wing.
The left is rather split between socialism and liberalism. The more money you make the more you tend to focus on liberal issues that aren't going to take away your cash. The guardian tends to get middle class readers and so focuses on liberalism. It's still left wing though and you should filter any information you get from the guardian same way as the daily mail. Many of the points he makes seem sensible and practical. The tone of the article is poor though.

Of you ask three lawyers the same question you get three answers. Seems to be the same with medical experts the newspapers are rustling up. Especially when the disease is new to them. Note the BBC are now saying the virus can stay up to 48 hours on surfaces. They said it was a very short time previously.

As for our public services. I've been working in public service for the last ten years. Cuts came in around the start of the decade. From 2011 to around 2015 the conditions were shameful. This was due to the speed and scale of cuts. Slowly new systems have been introduced and started working and slowly new staff have come in and we've got better. Not sure how that can be extrapolated to the NHS. I would imagine the number of deaths we see from this disease will be dwarfed by the number caused by cuts.

Many of the points he makes seem sensible and practical.

He talks about it being written from a public health point of view. The points disparaged above about the practicalities of caring for the elderly are not only sensible but an example of how the public can take care of the public. Limiting the public health discourse to "wash your hands" is gross negligence. That is stronger than 'pathetic' to me.

Was I. Who was this and independent expert in what?

Remember when the chief Rabbi attacked Labour during the election and his opinion didn't count as he was a Tory.... well same goes for this then. This bloke is a Labour party member with an agenda.

I'll continue to follow the most senior expert thanks

Are they? Have they come forward and said they disagree with the approach we are taking?
