Sam Greenwood

Plenty of negatives wrote about him over the weeks. Definitely some justified.

Yet he clearly has an eye for goal. That's not a bad trait. It would seem odd to take out one of our main goal threats because he 'goes missing' or any of the other stuff wrote about him.

Also people have to remember he's only 21. He's not had much football over his short career. Definitely never played as much as he is currently.

I doubt he'd have played this much had Mcgree been fit. So it's almost out of the current squad situation. He's done well. I'm not sure why he gets so much grief. Although it was Rogers last week. Many seem quick to hammer young players.

This is what I posted the other day on the same subject and my mind hasn't been changed yet:

I think he's *****. He is a rubbish striker being played left wing because he doesn't have the strength or pace to play up front on his own. In any of the positions behind the striker he's massively ineffectual. He's rubbish with the ball, makes the wrong decision almost every time, poor passer, holds on to the ball far too long, dribbles into dead ends and loses the ball. He occasionally gets in the right place at the right time to score the odd goal and his free kick against Leicester was great but I don't think those moments are enough to justify his inclusion.

Happy to see this post blow up in my face but I just don't see it with him. He's technically a good footballer so he could be good but no pace, strength or decision making lets him down.
🤣

I don’t think there’s much wrong with this really.

If he scores then great, if he doesn’t then he’s largely a passenger. I’m not sure we have a better alternative at the minute though.

I'm not saying that just scoring goals isn't necessarily a bad thing but I would say that's only the case if playing as a striker. You also have to score enough goals to justify being "just a goalscorer". I don't think 5 goals halfway through the season is enough to justify someone's inclusion (that goes for everyone in the squad because that's our top scorer).

This is my main problem with Greenwood. He looks to me like a striker and the good stuff he does is when he gets in the striker position but he's not fast or strong enough to be a striker. He's a good finisher but poor at almost everything else. Haaland is a great striker but he'd be a rubbish left winger as well.

There's a reason we're in the bottom half and we've got a goal difference of 0 and that's because we've not been good enough offensively or defensively and playing strikers as wingers and midfielders as strikers is a big part of that.

The majority of young players, especially attacking ones, are going to be inconsistent. We've been spoiled with Hackney last season and Rav this, though neither of those play in forward roles. Sam has scored a few very important goals, and just taking Swansea and Leicester is responsible for the team gaining 4 extra points that likely wouldn't have been the case otherwise had another player been playing in his place. I don't think we've another player who has his finishing ability - see 1st goal at Sunderland also.

He needs to play 10!
He is not a LF LW in a million years, he does not have the positional nouce outwide.

Coburn or Latte

McGree Greenwood Forss

Hackney O'Brian

That is our best MF and front 4 and I don't think we have played that ;lineup all season through injury.

We had a player last season who was a 10 and a 9 in one, two genuine talents on loan and a fit MgGree which makes us a little judgmental of players in these areas of the pitch.

This season we have a lad who was playing the equivalent of L2 last season in Silvera, Rogers who was average in a poor team at Blackpool and Greenwood who hasn't had a consistent position or long spell at a club in some time. The same can be said of the left back position and in central midfield in all honesty.

They're all going to have aspects to their game which led to us signing them and when they shine we feel they're great business, when they don't then they just don't compare to what we have had available last season.

If we'd spent 25m on Archer and Ramsey in the summer we would have had expectations of being in and around that top two, if they'd have shown the levels of consistency that Rogers and Lath are showing we'd be giving them pelters in those performances and then singing their praises the next time they turned it on.

The hope is clearly that after a full season at a higher level, with better players, against better players, that enough of these lads improve and/or showcase themselves enough to make for better long-term financial investments for the club.

I think we've been chronically unlucky not to have Smith, Lenihan, O'Brien, McGree and Forss fit as with those lads added to the first team squad we might have seen the other lads develop a little more consistency.

-------------Dieng --------------
Smith -- Rav -- Lenihan -- Engel
-----O'Brien --- Hackney -------
Jones --- Greenwood ---- Mcgree
------------Latte Lath-------------

Now you could prefer Bangura in at full back for pure pace, Fry for experience or McNair for composure at centre half, Dijk at fullback for those little triangles we create down the right.

You could prefer Howson in for O'Brien or even for Greenwood and push Hackney further forward. Barlaser is struggling to get in there yet stats seem to show his importance in starting moves for us.

You might be a big fan of Crooksy and his knack of getting the best out of Jones and being in the right place at the right time.

Perhaps you think Rogers is better in the hole for turning teams or Forss is better in the first half before Jones scares a tired fullback to death in the last half hour.

Big Josh could be a better bet than Lath if we want to bully some centre halves, Lath could even drop into a deeper role if we're feeling confident.

However, we haven't been afforded these options and the new lads have been under immediate pressure to perform at a level they haven't previously in their careers and maybe never will. Hopefully it has done them some good and we see some start to flourish so that our team in the second half of the season or next has the consistency to do what Ipswich are doing at the moment.

I foresee a midfielder and a centre forward as priorities in January and/or the summer if the deal is right. Don't be surprised to see us look at the prem for two loans if we can't get a permanent solution to improve the squad over the line.

Fullback (both sides) is definitely to be looked at unless we start seeing more consistency and centre half as well dependent on McNair's situation.

Greenwood is signed if Leeds don't go up, otherwise he's back to Leeds and someone else will take a chance at that price with a higher wage.

Buzzing for tomorrow, proper knock out game and I'm bricking it!

UTFB!

Every time the ball goes to his feet back to goal and the full back is up his ar$e he gives it away everytime!!

How frustrating was it when Fry played a perfect pass to his feet during the first half and we had men over but he tried to turn and lost the ball.

Send him back to Leeds and let's try and bring another winger in on loan.
