How do you see this situation in a couple of months from now?
I agree, providing the people, his oligarchs and soldiers continue to back him that is. Once sanctions really, really bite, people will turn on him. However, It would not surprise me to see China eventually intervene if his own people don’t.Putin won’t stop at Ukraine zorro
He will want to expand so any countries not in NATO will be targeted
Only 6% of Russia’s land borders touch NATO countries. Russia has land borders with 14 countries. Only five of them are NATO members. Estonia, Latvia. Lithuania, Norway and USAThey are all in nato though around him barring Finland but that will change v quickly.

But the rest are either loyal puppet states or out of putins anger range ( China and it’s acolytes)Only 6% of Russia’s land borders touch NATO countries. Russia has land borders with 14 countries. Only five of them are NATO members.
I think we've been another victim of western centirc thinking. When Ukrain falls, russias WESTERN border will all be with NATO countries except Finland. Most of it's borders, as you point out, are with none NATO countries.Only 6% of Russia’s land borders touch NATO countries. Russia has land borders with 14 countries. Can you believe even now the fins are still undecided as an estimated 53% now want to Join.I would like to see Sweden and Finland join NATO immediately, it would be a slap in the face to Putin with his vague and unenforceable threats should they join.
Worry is if it goes the other way, we just dont know if these threats are unenforceableI would like to see Sweden and Finland join NATO immediately, it would be a slap in the face to Putin with his vague and unenforceable threats should they join.
They announced last night that they would discuss it in their parliament. Can you believe even now the fins are still undecided as an estimated 51% now want to Join.
With this, and Ukrainian begging to join the EU it looks like Putins plans could ultimately backfire: Strengthening the resolve of EU and NATO, rather than forcing both to back down. From today’s politico
A survey by the Finnish broadcasting company Yle found that 53 percent of Finns support their country joining NATO. This figure goes up to 66 percent if neighboring Sweden were also to join NATO. This marks a drastic shift in public attitudes — in the previous poll in 2017, only 19 percent of Finns supported NATO membership
I think so. In his deluded state this is all about returning to the good old days of the USSR. He can kind of justify invading former Soviet countries to himself, not sure how he'd justify Finland. I don't think there's a proper treaty in place but I'm sure the other Scandinavian countries would start getting twitchy too and might well intervene.I think the general consensus is that he's unlikely (currently) to incur into NATO territory which makes Finland an obvious standout.
That said, if we're to assume (always dangerous) that this is genuinely about the historic soviet state, reunited Russia etc it's a stretch even for Putin to target the Finns?
Admittedly they were once part of the Russian empire but have been independent for 105 years.
