Red faction today

Was just behind the RF for the Preston game, and by the end was pretty fed up of some pubescent teenager with a megaphone sounding like Mickey Mouse telling us to sing more.

The atmosphere mirrored that of the performance on the pitch, as do most football games. They do a great job in generating an atmosphere, but there has to be a level of understanding that not everyone wants to be up for it, for 90+ minutes.

Everyone should take photos and clips of the moron with the megaphone, he might pull his head in if he’s aware he himself is being watched and called into order

Every place with good atmosphere has megaphones. Some have half a dozen like Milan and Dortmund. They even have them at Oberhausen.
The problem here is the culture, and that will take a while to shift. People will sing when we’re winning but not bother when we’re not, which ironically is when the team need it most.
If you spoke to the lad with the megaphone you’d see that he is a decent lad. Go to RF open night and you will see they have the best of intentions.
People think RF is all about them but it’s not. They are the focal point but they want full stand involvement for the better of the team.

For me, the move hasn't worked. I think they should've been aiming for a tad higher up directly behind the goal not front rows to the side. I'm middle of the North stand and i can hear them, obviously, but not as much as previously - but as mentioned previously, that could be that the football hasn't hardly helped inspire but RFs ethos is, or was, to keep a constant regardless of whats happening on the pitch.

The letter that was handed out is a massive own goal. They can pass that sort of information out between themselves, but if anyone told me or my kids to put their phones down they'd get told where to go. Phone signal pretty much means its just a paperweight anyway but i will check other scores, and texts from friends and family at my leisure during a game. Passing these out, and shouting at people on their phones will just get their backs up and turn people against them at a time when they should be getting folk on side.

The lad with the megaphone needs to stop the siren, that's mind numbingly annoying. Use it to create an atmosphere, start songs off along with the drum but that siren is crap - if it was an ambulance siren, and was used when an opposition player was feigning injury and used correctly it could become quite funny but at the minute its just crap. Be good if they could make it count when opposition GK is taking 20 seconds + to release the ball. They should also bring back the large cards with numbers on which were held up when a player dived, during the days when CR7 played for Man U for example

They are making it all about them if they are magephoning at other people to sing. Other fans aren't there as extras in RF's little ultra fantasy world.

Like I say, it’s culture.
In Milan and Dortmund they have about half dozen scattered along the front of the stand who point and shout at people to get involved.
People say ‘wow the atmosphere in curva sud or sud tribune are electric’ but it doesn’t happen by chance. It’s orchestrated by small groups

That song is dump.. yet they insist on still flogging it. Not every song is gonna hit. Let it go ffs.

Whatever changes have been made need undoing. Make RF Great Again!
The first line is enough to put me off. Most of these lads will have started following Boro when we were in the Premier League, in Europe and competing for cups, unless they are, what, 14?

If they were 21, they'd have been 6 when we were relegated under Southgate, I've always had the impression that most of them are on the younger side.

It's been 18 years since we were in Europe, a whole generation of now adult Boro fans won't have experienced any of that.

I like what the RF are trying to do and think they have good intentions but they are getting some things wrong here.

Moving their tickets and displacing fans wasn't really a good move and it obviously hasn't achieved what they were hoping from an atmosphere perspective.

The leaflets were idiotic and were a huge mistake.

I'm not against the megaphone but it should be used selectively for starting chants and should not be used whatsoever for shouting at fans to instruct them what to do. This will definitely have an adverse effect on what they are trying to achieve.

One big criticism of RF that is commonly made and has been for years now is that they don't sing enough songs that people can or want to join in with. They have their own Ultra style songs that they like to sing. They haven't changed this, if anything it's probably got worse. But there's no point shouting at people for not singing songs that they either don't know or don't like. If they really want to get people on board and get behind them then they need to listen to what people are saying back to them and take it in board. Rather than shouting at people with a megaphone they would be better using that megaphone to bang out a classic. That would be more effective.

We don't really have a good song that can be sang on repeat at the moment that people are getting behind and keeping that atmosphere going. One needed ASAP. Wilder/Carrick said has obviously died its death now. The Latte Lath song sort of got us through the end of last season when he was flying but that's not the answer.

It is not our culture though. It will take time, years, to grow organically where people over time will move to that section to replace people that move from it.

They cannot force that change by bellowing at people. They need to wind their necks in, chill out and let it happen naturally, not by force of megaphone.

It’ll never happen naturally though.
It needs orchestrating.
There aren’t enough people who will get it going naturally.
I agree that having a go at people will drive division

Cant get behind a song that starts off like that, alienates anyone over the age of 30 surely? Alright for the kids i suppose.
When i started following Boro we'd just left Ayresome Park and we went through the most successful period in the clubs history.

They’ve went from Utras to Ultra Cringe..

12th Man lost the plot after ‘sporting glory’

Red Faction have gone full circle and are now rushing out Sue Watson letters!

Time for a new group to lead the fans..

THE RIVERSIDE RADGIES!!

I can get behind that, as long as your group ethos is to fill the West upper, specifically those two bald spots that are empty every week. & you must use your free pint & not offer to give it up as long as SC prices freeze.

‘The statement produced wasn’t at all aimed to dictate what people can and can’t do within the south stand that’s not what we are trying to achieve. Our aim is to have everyone together working as one and building a special atmosphere for the players and opposing teams when they come here. Sometimes being passionate when supporting the lads can lead to words being shouted in the heat of the moment which can lead to displeasure from the rest of the south stand which again isn’t the intention from the group who ultimately want the atmosphere and culture at the riverside to be up there as the best in the country.

The group are always open to discussion on how the atmosphere and relationship between the stand could be improved and welcome people the opportunity to come down and discuss how things could run smoother for everyone on a match day. These open nights have ran twice now over the course of last season with very little input been added from the wider fan base which is the exact reason these nights are planned to boost the overall experience on a match day for both fans and the players.

On the back of last week the group have decided to again offer the chance for fans to come down and engage with the group on how we can move forward and improve the atmosphere and relationship in the south stand before the next home game Bristol city on the 19/10.
