Putin to recognise the independence of two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine

Strangely, there doesn’t appear to be any footage or photos of Russian or unmarked vehicles entering Ukraine. Or at least not yet anyway.
There is footage and photos in a number of different reports from various sources. Someone already posted a video clip that was shown on Sky (and also other places). CNN for instance, reported on a video that had been shown on Russian channel RTVI, of military convoys moving through the streets of Donetsk.

Glad you liked them 👍🏻 They’re both really knowledgeable on Russia, they’re Russian speakers, have extensive contacts and have spent serious time over here which gives them a proper handle on what’s happening away from the bluster, biased opinion and half-interested commentators we often get in our media.
Galeotti used to be the Power Vertical co-host before Whitmore moved from RFE/RL and took the podcast with him, they were great together. Whitmore gets some really great guests, the former president of Estonia, was on a short while ago. Always worth checking them out when Russia us in the news.
Smoggle ; what's the other recommended podcast on Russia ; I'm fully up to date on the Power vertical podcast episodes with Brian Whitmore.(very good) There was another recommended a month or so ago and can't remember if that was you recommending ?

Residents in Mariupol this morning said the port city on the sea of Azov was surrounded by Russian forces and under heavy attack.

Despite a slow start to its military offensive, and fierce Ukrainian resistance, Russia was getting closer to its strategic goal of capturing the 250km strip along the Sea of Azov, between the Crimean peninsula and Mariupol.

Russian forces captured the small port city of Berdyansk last night, its mayor, Oleksandr Svidlo, confirmed last night, and took over the administration building.

Video showed armoured vehicles marked with “Z” patrolling Berdyansk’s residential streets.

cheers...did you see my post on the 'pre conditions' thread...assessing the current situation....with Talks, sanctions impact etc.. ?

Just caught up, cheers, very interesting, I’ll probably not have much time to contribute on here as we’re leaving Russia tomorrow if all goes to plan via Kazakhstan, got loads to sort out but hopefully back in UK on Friday 👍🏻

Stay safe Smoggle and if you're back in the UK on Friday it'll be great timing for a very well deserved introduction to the serious business of the Friday drinking thread!!

In all seriousness though I hope you all have a very safe and straightforward journey. Take care.

I posted on here last night for you

about the us embassy advising all Americans to leave ASAP as means to do so getting harder.

Hope all goes well

Haha a Friday drink will be very welcome! I’ve got a bit of time in Astana too so will be great to catch up with a few old mates out there, every cloud! Cheers 🍻

Ah cheers, didn’t see your post but I’d seen the news elsewhere. It was really difficult finding any sensible routes out, this one has set us back a fair bit but it’s just not worth risking things here when we don’t know what could happen - such a shame though, we’re having to give loads of my daughters toys away cos they’re too bulky so it’s confusing for her, especially as this is the second time in less than 2 years she’s having to say bye to friends. We’ll have to make a better choice for the next place, no more dictatorships! 😂

Just a quick thankyou to everyone who offered their best wishes to my family and I as we left Moscow in a bit of a hurry. Thankfully, after a whirlwind two days of packing and sorting our apartment/belongings, we flew to Kazakhstan, before connecting to London and then back to the North East yesterday. Our babushka concierge took most of our food so she is certainly well stocked to survive the sanctions for a while, but she’s a good person and not wealthy so I’m glad she will have some help.

Whilst Moscow was calm and safe as we left, there was definitely an impending feeling of uncertainty and the chatter among expats seems to be all about leaving Russia or ways to get their money out. Both are getting harder.

For me things escalated very quickly and even if everything somehow returns to normality soon, leaving was the right decision. Whilst I take no pleasure in it and it has to happen, I expect life is going to get much harder in Moscow and Russia, and I can’t predict where the public will turn their anger, but they are being force fed Kremlin propaganda and a significant amount believe it, even if they don’t want war (or a “special operation” as it is called there). I also received personal news from home that finally made up our minds to leave, I won’t go into details but I didn’t make it back in time, there was nothing I could have done but I can at least help out a bit where I’m needed.

It was a very tiring and stressful week, especially for my young daughter, but I certainly realise that it pales into insignificance to what many brave Ukrainians are suffering. However, it is good to be home. Thanks again fmttmers!
