Press Conference 2pm

I think the way that almost every single pass was under or over hit or wildly off target was a sign of us trying too hard.

After a couple of wins passing the ball is second nature, when you are on a losing run it feels like trying to pass a rugby ball using your feet.

Dr Al Haskey is going to be lying in that hospital bed with a changed personality - it will takes weeks/months for him to get his personality back again - so I will give Doctors a miss. As for Impossible - I hope that Boro's points task this Saturday is not Impossible.
No worries on the Doctors score Rob. Al Haskey was not mentioned in today’s episode.

As much as we’re struggling, Southampton are there for the taking this weekend. Score the first goal and the roof will come off. And the space will open up and we can play our game. Confidence will come back.
Playing devils advocate...

Alternatively, we are also here for the taking and if they score the first goal, the crowd's concern/anger/frustration will very likely boil over and confidence will no doubt be at the lowest it's been since Carrick has been in charge.

Must say I haven’t detected any lack of effort, it’s the lack of quality in the team that is the problem but he clearly can’t say that.
I think the only thing I would describe as a lack of effort the other night was when Silvera bottled that one on one with the keeper and backed out for fear of being wiped out. He might just have got lucky had he gone steaming in and possibly wouldn't be getting the flack he is getting now.

In the main though I totally agree, they're clearly trying but they just aren't good enough.

I feel for Hackney because it looks as though he is taking an awful lot of responsibility on his shoulders, trying to drive us forward, sometimes the passes come off and sometimes they don't, but again, at least he's trying.

Yes I’m not sure how Silvera, without sitting down on the pitch, managed to let their keeper get to the ball first. My main concern with Silvera is that he looks small and weak regardless of his footballing ability. I have a similar worry about McGree.

Hackney is taking massive responsibility and taking it well - I think the link up with him and OBrien will be very good in time.

I think Carrick needs to pick his physically strongest team to get some points on the board and go from there.

I didn't watch the presser, but I can understand Carrick being positive, or at least trying to be positive.

I think a lot of people here are looking at our points tally and have somehow filled the gaps that it means we've played worse than anyone. I 100% do not think this is true, actually I know it's not true, but nor do I think we've been anywhere near good enough for the play off spots either, and this is because the team is nowhere near the level or understand of each other as the team of last year. People need to massively lower their expectations.

Barring the first couple of games and WBA when we had a man sent off we've actually done alright in some games. Sure there have been some bad halfs, but it's normally been countered by a half which was better than the other one was bad.

We're not getting results, but you can't just make assumptions based on results, as it's not accurate.

We're conceding more than last year, largely as we're giving the ball away in stupid positions which is putting the defence in extremely difficult circumstances. We've not actually defended that bad, from a point of view of the defence (and keeper), but the best form of defence is to not lose the ball in the first place.

We've missed an absolute hat full of chances too, this doesn't mean we're playing bad, it means we're playing alright enough to create the chances, but the problem is we've just not converted chances which should be converted with far more regularity. Turns out it hurts when you lose one of the most create players in the league, plus a no10 who got 30, and a striker who would have got 20-25 had he been here all season.

The attacking threat is not as good as last year, but the midfield is good enough that we should still be able to score with more regularity than we have done.

Carrick can't thrown the team under the bus, it will achieve nothing, other than make things worse. Carrick isn't exactly going to shout from the rooftops that the club has shafted him by letting the best players go, and not replacing them. Maybe it's not the clubs fault and we've just got no money, or no ready and able players wanted to come.

The club have talked numerous times about not wanting to spend loads on player transfer fees and contracts as it needs to be more sustainable, which is understandable, that will cost positions though, and lots of them.

People have been crying on here that we should be buying in young talent and then developing them up and going from there, yet don't acknowledge that the method of doing that takes years. It also means you're going to take a significant hit short term, as you're buying players who are not ready made. If you're not splashing cash, it makes it harder to bring in good loans, as the loanee's will want to know what your other aims are player/ transfer wise, good players don't want to play for teams who are rebuilding, if they have a choice.

Calls to change the style or formation from the style we've specifically bought and trained players for would not be optimum either. Sure we would miss less chances doing that, only because we would be creating far less and we would probably end up conceding even more.

Results will pick up, and Carrick is a good man to get us out of this hole, as proven by him doing it last year. This year will be harder, which is why we won't finish as high.

People need to calm down, think about it in a bit more depth and give it time.

I really like Carrick and his calm attitude - but the questions and answers are pretty much identical every week.
Isn't that pretty much every manager though? Especially when the team aren't winning?

He's into a no blame culture, and I agree with him. Bumming your players out publicly isn't a way of solving anything. what really matters is what is said behind closed doors.
