Press Conference 2pm

Agree, they have become utterly pointless. But it is the only chance the manager/head coach gets to convey anything to the fans. If you don't want to hear from him then fine, but many do, especially after the way we have gone from promotion favourites to rock bottom in the space of 6 weeks.

I didnt say I didnt want to hear from him, I still read each report, I just dont expect too much, nor do I get emotional (not saying thats you) when we get similar vague but positive answers after most pressers.

You better present those "number of fans" to Michael at the next press conference and offer to help him coach 24 young men and turn them into Champions League winners (y)
Do an F.A.O. to Rob, he’s nearer and can cut and paste them weekly, or the Boro’s media team reps looking in on here could do it 😉

Difficult one this. Carrick has to be positive for the players and the fans.
You can say we need realism and we need to ask why we are where we are - but at the same time Sheff Wed showed a side with really brittle confidence or lack of confidence. Is it a question of having to build on the small positives of that 2nd half goal. We all know that it was a gaping opportunity for a win against a terrible side but has it taught a little more about who we need to play in the side and who we can't afford to play in the side at this point?
As I say Carrick will surely be very mindful today of morale of players and fans - and what he can say and what he shouldn't say.
I'm not sure a scrappy goal from a corner counts as a big enough positive to build anything from. It wasn't a well worked goal or anything, just a hit and hope as most corners are.

There was some good football in the second half for a ten minute spell, as there was against Blackburn, which shows there is some ability and the way we want to play is in there. We need more than 10 minutes of good football per game though. That has to become the majority of the game and most importantly we have to be able to do it at 0-0. When you are a goal down it is a completely different game because the opposition will sit back and let you have the ball. The fact we haven't scored the opening goal in a league game since April 24th, 12 games ago, is the biggest cause for concern and I'd like to know why we have such a dreadful record of scoring first, which is not something we particularly struggled with before then.

Didn't mean you specifically, but because the press conferences have become what they have many don't watch. I always watch what MFC put out, but its heavily vetted and I doubt if anyone did ask a difficult question they'd show it anyway.

The 2nd half on Tuesday shows the players still want Carrick at the club.

The only reason for him to throw them under the bus would he if he wanted paying off and to get out of here.

You can give praise in public but I don't think a manager should ever publicly criticise their own players, unless they want to be sacked.

But what is a ‘difficult’ question though?

“Michael, Engel looks sh*te. You must be absolutely fuming with Kieron Scott?”

“Just a quick one on Dael Fry, Michael, if I can. Why has he spent most of this season looking like he’s playing with stones in his boots?”

“McGree is struggling isn’t he, Michael. Is it because he wants to leave because he knows we’re going down to division three? Or is it because he’s too busy maintaining his lockdown mullet?”

I think people want someone from the club to come out and b*llock someone else from the club. But it just doesn’t work like that. I don’t like Boro managers mouthing off in public. There’s dressing rooms for that.

Also Carrick played under Ferguson. He seldom criticised his players in public for things that happened on the field. He’d dig them out for off-field stuff sometimes, courting others clubs, etc, and then just get rid of them but he generally kept the performance-related criticism in-house. That’s how players like it as well. They’ll respect you more for it.

He doesn't have to single players out, just be abit more sympathetic to fans who pay hard earned money especially during a financial crisis, there's a divide between the club and fans and I don't think it's helped by Carrick saying we played well when we haven't

He’s saying he thinks we’ve played well in patches. I would agree with him. It’s interesting that people pick up on that rather than the stuff he’s said about improving, or not giving teams a start, or giving ourselves too much to do.

It’s obvious to anyone half sensible that he’ll be really upset to be bottom of the league, and really p*ssed off with results. He’s no mug. He will be doing his talking on the training field, which is how it should be IMO. That’s exactly how it was last season.

I asked a couple of questions that I hope were meaningful.
Michael Carrick talked a lot about psychology and confidence today. I really hope we can see some progress and light at the end of the tunnel.
It was a brilliant season in so many ways up til April/May. And we are still in the same calendar year. It seems almost surreal that things have fallen so far so soon. Go out and beat Southampton on Saturday Boro and start turning it around.

He's not doing his talking on the training ground though, or if he is the players aren't listening. Why?

As much as we’re struggling, Southampton are there for the taking this weekend. Score the first goal and the roof will come off. And the space will open up and we can play our game. Confidence will come back.

They are playing for him. Or at least responding. They responded to him on Tuesday night, he’d clearly b*llocked them at half time.

To be fair the issue of conceding first was there last season as well. We had the best record for recovering points from losing positions in the division. The issue now is we don’t score goals, not that the players aren’t playing for the manager. In my opinion.

But why does it take a half time team talk to change? Why can't we start well? I can't remember a game this season where we've had a good first half

I didn't say they weren't playing for him. But whatever is happening on the training ground isn't working.

I have no idea. I would be tempted to put it down to a lot of new players, many of them young and inexperienced, being unfamiliar with the tempo of football at this level. I suspect Carrick thinks this will come and that there is plenty of scope for good football and general improvement within the squad, which is possibly why he’s so calm in public. In private, in training, I suspect he is just getting on with coaching and trying to guide them.

Maybe that could be a question one of the journo's puts to Carrick? Don't think it would be too unreasonable...

He's a young manager. He hasn't leart all of the standard press conference lines yet. He's just trying to keep the pressure off the players as far as I can tell. It's clearly got to them.
