Pre season - half baked will it be fully cooked

You can sense wilders frustration in being several weeks behind where we should be
With 12 days to kick off the pre season buzz has began to fade...and I am an ardent boro optomist ( with a dash of fatalistic pessimism added for seasoning )
Loving the new look defence...they are probably going to be hard to beat...
But 46 nil nil.draws will not cut the mustard
It's goals and strikers that get the crowd going...wave after wave of attacking pulsating football and the onion bag rippling ....
I'm so disappointed that the spence saga has put our pre season plans back significantly
Here's hoping to 2 top notch strikers coming on board this week to give our game against wba a massive boost

In boro and gibbo.....I trust

When even the journists rumours start to dry up it's a little concerning. we have to trust that Scott and Bausor are working behind the scenes on several things, not least two strikers. On top of that a couple of injuries would have us short in other departments too and with less than 2 weeks to go there's barely time to even introduce incoming players to the system wilder wants to play. If we intend to hit the ground running it will be touch and go. We are all aware of the criticism that surfaces if new players don't perform instantly whilst others will say they need 5 or 6 games to 'bed in'. If the intention is Automatic promotion can we afford that?

It's always the same now. The way the season starts with the transfer window still open for ages leaves everything in a state of flux. Managers spending more time trying to get a squad sorted than concentrating on the football 👎

I agree

It does seem odd that it’s taken so long to fill key positions. The problem with having loan forwards is that they leave at the end of the season and need to be replaced. If we had a settled forward line they would be stepping through the gears in pre-season to be ready for a week on Saturday. As it is we are the position of whoever comes in being weeks behind where they and we need to be. Every point is crucial and it looks like we will lose a few until we settle down if and when people come in. Frustrating all round as it all feels very flat.

I bet if you did a survey of all the Champo managers and they were honest about it at least 90% would say they are short of players / unhappy with the balance of the squad etc, always the same a couple of weeks before the season for most clubs and has become worse of the years due to the transfer window being open until end of August.

We were always going to sell Spence, north of 10mil, so this hasn't impacted our plans. Our place in the transfer food chain is impacting it. We invariably need a larger team to bring in a replacement to allow our target to move on.

There are no larger clubs in the Championship to fend off, nor are we likely to be buying anybody decent from the PL.
So you are talking about borrowing PL players - and I get that you may have to wait later in the window to do that.
Foreign players, and those in the Championship and below should be more signable without having to wait for PL clubs to ponce around.
If I were Wilder then I would be starting to grow very frustrated. He has 7-8 more players to integrate into his squad and first team.

The spence money, doesnt change the fact we are no longer a big hitter in terms of finance in the championship. Realistically we are not a promtion contender finacially we probably just make the top 10, we cant affoard to assemble a top championship squad. The only way we can get a squad together capable of promotion is with smart buys and wilders manmanagement skills.

Pretty pragmatic glover...but I kind of /tend to maybe agree...

I'm really confused as to what Wilder was promised when he came on board. As far as I see it there were 3 options (this was before Spence became a real saleable asset and the cup runs that boosted the coffers):

1) You can overhaul the squad, we have got rid of some big earners, but cash is tight so mainly with loans and frees.
2) You can overhaul the squad but we have to sell one asset to do so. McGree coming in could mean Tav was this player or Wilder may have had an eye on Lenihan in and Fry going
3) We have a 'warchest' so you can overhaul the squad and buy some players

I guess that there is a chnace that (3) is true but that the warchest is now larger thanks to Spence and it's harder to get the upgraded players that are now more in our reach.

Promised 3 but it's really 1 and has been all along. I don't think it's out of the question wilder walking at some point

That is what is so frustrating though. Can you imagine how much difference it would make to a promotion campaign having your squad ready to go for the first game of the season so you hit the ground running instead of spending the first 4 weeks of the season changing the side to incorporate new signings who don't know the system.

This 100%. He is clearly getting frustrated.

we are potentially replacing 9 or 10 players half the squad,so a promotion challenge is always going to difficult under those circumstances. It may be we finish well like forest but i think we have a tough start and too many new siginings to incorporate

Let's see what the team looks like when we play West Brom and what the result is before we panic too much eh? We could have bought in Dwight Gayle and wasted another ridiculous amount on wages, splashed out on Tommy Henry or Gykores (Sporar the second and Britt mark two?) or loaned another PL player not ready for the Championship. It's about getting the right players at the right price and not just who is available!

To my mind we’re sort of where we where ahead of Karanka’s first full season in charge. We looked pretty short as the season started but added Clayton, Bamford, Damia and Wildschut to the squad before the window closed. Even Nsue didn’t arrive until July 31. At this stage of that summer, we’d added 6 players(4 on loan) to a squad that had finished 12th the season before and had allowed a dozen players to leave.

I also remember people worrying about the goalkeepers as we had Dimi, Mejias and Blackman.

We essentially hear this sort of panic/worry every summer. Players will be in before the end of the window and players will leave.

I don't think we'll see striker until the end of the window, after EPL clubs have brought in replacements; Muniz and Armstrong I think it will be. Plus, add a couple of midfielders and a LCB and our squad will look very different after 6/7 games.

Wilder said we will need to be patient in that regard and I think that's why.
