Phil Foden

Been waiting for him to get regular starts and show what he can do. I still think the fact he’s made 20 league starts at the age of almost 21 suggests that Pep doesn’t believe he is going to go on to be the “English Messi” or whatever he was hyped as. I’m sure he can/could go on to achieve Lampard/Gerrard levels which is obviously a big achievement in itself and no doubt he’ll win loads of trophies and England caps and be a fantastic player.

But I sort of don’t really care unless he turns out to be an English player who could potentially help us win a major tournament. That said Messi’s never won a major tournament himself. I wonder if Foden will be that player? I’d just be more convinced if Pep saw him as a really key player by now.

I think a lot of that is down to him being quite small in stature. The technique and ability have been there for a couple of years but he needed to develop physically to be ready for regular starts. Messi is small too but is quite stocky and dense for his size. He matured sooner than Foden and was ready for the first team sooner. Not that I think Foden is on that level, but he’s clearly got serious potential.

Jesus was offside (are you allowed to say that). Overall though it was a very entertaining game, well done Cheltenham.

Probably a different thread, but the abbreviations they use for club names these days aren’t what they used to be back in old fashioned MOTD days are they? How do you get CLT?

CHE is Chelsea, CHL might be Charlton?

I'm guessing it's to avoid confusion with them.

Foden wasn’t offside the other lad moving straight at the keeper was.. totally interfering with play and totally offside.

Not defo though, very marginal. The pictures show that.

Linesman didn’t give them and I’m glad we didn’t have 5 minutes of line drawing to check. Same with Cheltenham’s goal, the joy of the moment could have been lost as they checked for a push.

I don't understand how you can have VAR in some games and not others of the same competition played on the same day. Just to confuse further, if that game had been at the Etihad there would have been VAR.

Foden looks excellent, but needs to keep this up for a few years and avoid the usual pit falls so he isn't the next Deli Ali, Ross Barclay, Jack Wilshire, David Bentley etc....

He had a great game yesterday, kept them going. I didn't see any clear offsides either, the commentators try to find controversy when there isn't any.

He'll be far better imo than Juninho. Juninho never really reached his potential due to the injuries.

Not a cat in hell's chance. Juninho was the playmaker for the world champions and fed the bullets to Ronaldo. Ludicrous to suggest that Foden will be 'far better'. As usual, London Smoggie trying to be controversial.

Not trying to be controversial. I think he will go on to be better but time will tell. Juninho never reached the levels he should have due to injuries

He still has some way to go. Juninho had fifty odd caps for the best national side in the world, and a PL Player of the year.

Foden is clearly a good player but I don’t feel as excited about him as I did about Rooney when he was 20-21.

Looked blatant to me on the box.. different angles I guess. City had the quality to take them out and there was nowt wrong with their third goal.. for me the beeb were gushing over the two goals that were clearly offside.

He’s already city’s top goal scorer this season and he’s scoring some big big goals for them this season.

Am I surprised? Not really because I always thought he was going to be a brilliant player.

He’s fantastic to watch. His movement, skill and decision making for a 20 year old is incredible.

If I was the England coach, I’d be building my team around him. He’s that good.

He’s absolutely class. I thought he was an outstanding talent without the goals he’s scoring but to see him looking like scoring and getting chances every game he’s playing is making me think of him higher. England should build the team to fit him in it
