Our recruitment- beyond a joke

Our defence is a real worry.

We currently have only two centre backs - one of whom hasn't played for 6 months and has had serious injuries in the past. The other isn't currently training and had a shocking last season.

We are OK at RB with Dijksteel and Spence.

LB we have Bola who looks every bit the league 1 player. Coulson who isn't fancied by the manager as a LB, and Johnson who did OK as a wing back last season but is a winger by trade.

I think there is a very justifiable reason to panic.

Just bear with the club , these are extraordinary times . There isn’t a precedent and these guys know how to manage a club better than us .
any discord by the fans on social media is going to possibly spook the board into inappropriate buys .

Revenue will be lower yet again, significantly so.
We are still paying for monk and pulis signings and tied with their wages.
The club can't recruit until:
1. These millstones are taken from around our necks by other clubs.
2. Gibson injects equity/attracts equity investment to ease FFP being tied to just revenue over cost.

So the Boards decision making will be informed and led by a bunch of no marks on Twitter and Message Boards who haven't got the first clue about running a football club ?

This is true but there are kids spitting their dummies out early in every transfer window.

You sell the club by showing the amenities, stating the ambition, how this will be achieved. How the area is attractive, quality of life. We seem clueless at doing this. Oh, Lemmy the season starts very soon not in 40 odd days time.We are seriously in need of bodies in
Go on then Nosmo, how would you sell the club to a prospective signing?

I said ‘ possibly ‘ And it has happened in the past . It’s called peer pressure

I wonder if the reputation Warnock has actually limits our transfer opportunities? There are clearly Warnock type players out there but there seem to be plenty who are not.

I think any positive transfers in may be in spite of our recruitment set up, not because of them.

I would love to see Gibson give Warnock a free rein and ditch the underperforming deadwood.

I think this is a bit premature. We don't really know what's going on because transfer dealings are generally not conducted in public. Also, most of the action takes place towards the end of the period. Nothing happens for a good while, then suddenly a lot happens.

You simply can't know how many we have been in for. Out of the 5-6 heavily linked we may not of wanted half of them. We maybe enquired and said no or got out bid (probably on wages).

I still remember Neil Harris when we signed Saville 'Boro offered a ridiculous amount for Sav'. That's damming in itself😕. Lee Bowyer on Shitesteel 'you can't block a move when some one is offering the kid 10k a week.... Its life changing'.

The teams they are signing for are 'better' than us. We had a fecking car crash of a season last year.... Try selling that ahead of Bristol City or Forest (both minted).

It also works both ways. The very reason we signed the likes of Braithwaite / Saville and Mcnair etc isn't by 'selling the club'. We offered twice what they were worth and paid double what anyone else would. So we are stuck with them and no means of anyone signing them.

Throwing money at whatever an agent asks hasn't worked. I am all for not been held to ransom. I am sure we are still a decent payer in champo terms. I would imagine we offered Moore twice what he was on at Wigan (doubt it was much). Yet Cardiff maybe offered more and also made the playoffs.... Its a no brainer.

Spot on . We still haven’t won at home since Boxing Day. Can’t believe they’re not beating down the Riverside doors wanting to sign .

I agree with the above; in the mind set of someone who is not living in the area;

We wimpered out of the premier league in full melt down of managers leaving etc
We have played unattractive football under Pullis
We dont score goals and are not set up to score goals
We have a manager who has signed for a year
The perception outside of the North East is that Middlesbrough is a dump, I know that isnt the case.
We are a club that has skirted around relegation.

To counter this reputation we have to pay more or offer something that others cant offer.

It was a rare video with Gibson and he was honest in stating how we had to pay over the odds of other clubs as Boro are not , believe it or not on every players dream club to play for.
He said it was a real task not just to sell the club but to sell the idea of spending 3 years + on Teesside.

Its still true today. Even more so.

In the long term we will have to build a new team from youth. Its the only way we will get back to Prem.
I like being in the Championship. Every game is winnable unlike playing in the dirt of 17-20 in the prem

Cheers for that. While I agree I prefer being in Championship in fact unless I have a bet on the game(or Traore is involved) I rarely watch P.L games. That said you have to try to attain the best you can.
On your first point I do not think it is as true today. We were signing players who could have their pick from the top clubs in the world then now we are losing out on players who are not even in the same league(by a country mile). Wonder how many of our targets came up to look around our facilities. Thats got to be a massive plus for the club. Show them the training facilities the good parts of the local area. Remember Robbo talking about signing someone and they kept him well away from the town until they had is signature. That might have been in Ayresome days.

It's okay saying that the transfer window closes in a couple of months and we have plenty of time, but the season starts in three weeks! Three weeks!!! The team has been weakened, not strengthened. I trust in Warnock but I don't trust in the recruitment set up.

There are not that many players still in the bracket of point 1. Do you think those coming in are going to play for nothing. I would say from where we were on wages we should almost be at a manageable level. Britts contract only as a year to run so any decent offer might get him. McNair and Saville might be on decent wages but I can't for the life of me see why they deserve it. Would get rid of both if possible.
