Ollie Robinson

Question for those that think that Robinson political persuasion and racism as an 18-20 year old should be unpunished because he was only a kid and therefore shouldn't be accountable. Shemima Begum...I guess you all feel she should be allowed back into the country with no punishment as long as she apologises for her 15 year old selfs life choices?
With appropriate safeguards then yes, she probably should.

They are not remotely similar acts, don't be so silly.
The acts might be different in detail but they were both about positioning oneself in a bigoted and extremist manner, publicly, the difference in detail is irrelevant, although Shimima was in fact only a child when she made those decisions. Of course she was radicalised by adults with extreme malice.

Treat them both the same, punishment based on the extremity of their behaviours and an understanding of their age and circumstances at the time, with a chance to grow into better people.

Yep, this.

she was 1

“In detail” ?!

come on, behave lad

I'm being serious, if people want to excuse Robinson of being just 18 as an excuse, well she was literally a child and was surrounded by radicalising factors. Now I'm not suggesting her crime is the same level as his, she should certainly have a higher tariff to pay to society, but at the same time we have to accept she was a child and the precedent has been set by some on here that youth is a mitigating factor. There is an enormous difference between 15 and 20 by the way in maturity and susceptibility to influence.

If we wanted to be really silly we could claim it's cancel culture to refuse her return to this country, but personally I would say it is playing a nationalistic populist dogwhistle with someones life.

If people argue that age for him is a factor that should let him off, then it should reduce her culpability in her actions, not remove, but certainly reduce.

Agree age does reduce her culpability, of course it does. To what extent is the debate to be had.

I seem to have wandered into a parrallel universe where joining ISIS, an organisation that proudly murders and beheads Westerners is the same as posting something on twitter 8 years ago.

How do I get back to the real world? Ah yes, the red X button in the top right corner of my screen.

I'm not sure a few offensive tweets are comparable to fleeing the UK to join a terrorist organisation in Syria. He has apologised lets move on.

I do actually feel we should take responsibility for Begum and allow her back for a fair trial. Am I allowed to have both of these view points?

Sickening that someone can grow up thinking those sort of views are acceptable. He sounds like a complete scumbag to be honest. Regardless of views on the punishment, someone like that shouldn’t be representing their country

can you tell me the specific tweet from the scumbag that you are sickened by and warrants a lifetime ban from all international sporting activity?

But should they be representing their county? And if so, why is it different? Its a bit weird how no one cared about this stuff until he took a wicket for England on Thursday. Even though he's been happily plugging away for Sussex for years.

If anything it is also an indictment of how the role of a journalist nowadays is simply to trawl through people's historical Twitter accounts. What a job!

Plenty to choose, don’t know how racism has become acceptable if it happened a few years ago and if the lad was only 18. Should know much better by that age

I am not gonna lie I used to make some very stupid jokes when I was 18 that I'd be ashamed of now if someone dug them up from somewhere. Admittedly, I wasn't daft enough to record myself saying them or put them online, but I can absolutely tell you that by the time I was 27 I knew exactly where I'd gone wrong.

I am not sure its wise to throw these people entirely on the scrapheap.

It was dragged up by a newspaper that is now printing that the historical tweets from over a decade ago have led to this ban. To make it sound like they think thet are not relevant, which is fine and I can have sympathy with this view point. Why though on Wednesday they thought the tweets were bad enough to undermine the players career is beyond me

Unless they were just trying to have a go at the ECBs new push on equality?

100%

Depending on when you grew up might impact that though, attitudes towards those kind of views have dramatically changed over the years.

I’m a similar age to him and at 18 I wouldn’t dream of having those sort of views. They disgusted me then and they disgust me now. Don’t know anyone at this age who did personally, it was pretty clear at that age that those views weren’t acceptable. Plus he wrote them at 18, not 8. He was an adult and he has no excuses for those kind of actions

I mean people in any job don't really get sacked these days, it's legally a very difficult thing to do, so the fact he got sacked tells you a lot about his behaviour at that time.
Not sure where you work BM but in these days of social media its very easy to sack people. I know about 5 or 6 who have been sacked through things they or others have posted on social media like Facebook. Some deservedly IMO others not.

Well I turned 18 in 2000, I don't think anyone is making excuses for him as such, or saying what he said wasn't awful, just that he probably deserves a chance to put it right rather than being condemned and punished indefinitely (banned from England or whatever).

An excellent post.
