Sounds a bit like when the Nazis managed to convince the people that the enemy was the opposition.
Almost like how all the other parties and factions together had just as many seats as the Nazis but distrusted each other just as much and argued amongst themselves.
This allowed law after law to be brought in to silence any criticism of the government, becoming more and more brutal each time until voices were lost in fear.
Change a few words in that and we have the UK.

It is EVERYTHING about who owns the flag. If you see our flag as a symbol of nationalism then we have already lost. I feel twitchy about displays of flags, I don't like to see overt posturing like this...
BUT unless the normal non-bigoted masses can feel that the flag belongs to them we have lost.
Oh and could the Tory enablers give it a rest with the "Starmer is just as bad" carp?

This won't be popular with the majority of the electorate. I think they are massively over estimating how many people are anti asylum seekers. Most people expect us to help people that need help and understand the vast difference between asylum and immigration.
The reason we have got to the point where one side can be this extreme though is because the other side has had their head in the sands. It wasn't that long ago that immigration was an ordinary political topic that everyone could talk about. Labour decided at some point that immigration is good and refused to talk about any sort of control or entertain the idea of it not being universally positive. It's common sense that there has to be a number that is sensible. Even if you buy the "all immigration is good" line there is obviously a limit on infrastructure and public services.
Obviously being in the EU meant we had no control so it stopped being discussed and has let the extreme views on the other side go unchallenged. It also doesn't help to call anyone that mentions immigration a racist. That just makes things worse because they become entrenched. There are legitimate concerns about immigration and we should be able to have grown up discussions about them.

I think this is why brexit was so successful. The "take back control" lie was so pernicious, so oft repeated that even now, when it's blatantly obvious it was a lie, some people still repeat it. Some brexiteers fell do deeply for the lies they think of them as self evident truths. It's Trumoiab politics and it's ruining us
apologies, I missed context there, I made an unnatural assumption that any nazi reference would have been referring to the hardocre elements in control of our government.
