Next signing after Conway...

Agree, give the second team a run out.
I understand the sentiment but I don’t think it’s a realistic option.

Thousands of Boro fans travelling to Leeds to watch the youth team play? Certainly not something Carrick has done in the past.

Some of the Top 18 players are our second team too. I understand what people are saying, but just throwing in the towel for the cup games isn’t the best approach imo.

I’d much rather we play a side capable of winning the game, as a decent result will give us even more confidence / momentum going into Saturday.

The thing is, we have a very good second strong team and they need game time match sharpness, we have built a big strong squad up and these are the games you need to utilise it...plus the league has to take priority.
We need to keep potential injuries, bookings to a minimum.

I agree with mixing it up. Just don’t think we can protect the “top 18” squad players as Holgate said, as a number of those are our second team and need game time.

I’d predict Carrick will make 7-8 changes from Saturday, with any players who played Saturday be the first to be brought off.

To be honest, I expect Leeds will make a number of changes as well.

I do like Azaz but his decision making since signing has always been a bit off. Takes too many touches when in a great position.

Should’ve had a couple goals yesterday.
Yeah I thought he should probably had two goals or two assists, Jones probably the same. We got away with it yesterday but those delays/indecision/poor final ball will definitely cost us over a season if we don't sharpen up.

We primarily missed out last year, even after our horrendous start, by not scoring when well on top and creating good chances, especially against teams we should have been beating.

We need to rectify that.

I presume if we'd gone 2 or 3 up Hamilton and a few others might have got a bit more of a run out, but as it was so tight and nervy, Carrick decided to not really utilise his bench till late on.

McGree and Jones (especially after his breakaway chance) looked dead on their feet for the last 15 minutes.

Feels like a nice risk free opportunity to assess the strength of the squad. Don't use an entirely 2nd eleven, but can tinker with our "options positions" to see how they fare against one of the strongest teams in our league.

I'd base it around who are the players that we need to protect the most. Players that were dead on their feet on saturday, or that have had recent injuries or susceptible to muscle issues.

Rav - susceptible to muscle injuries
Hackney - just fit after missing much of last season
McGree - was dead on his feet and recovered over summer from injuries
Jones - dead on his feet
Lath - had muscle injuries last year

I'd rest these.

Dieng, Ayling, Clarke, Engel, Morris, Azaz are all fit and rugged enough to continue

im very unsure,i just think hes ok
Look at all the goals he scored last season

Exactly, it feels a bit like a free hit to role play "what if last season's injury crisis happens again?"

We have a decent big ish squad. Need to give the fringe players a run out, without weakening the team significantly. 4-5 changes?

So the likes of Hamilton, Bergzorg, Howson, Barlaser, Coburn should be getting decent run outs.

I'd resist chucking the likes of Finch, McCabe, McCormack etc in. Long old season, sure they will get their chance.

You don't learn anything about fringe players by playing a team of fringe players. If you want to see how they might integrate into the first team and be an option then you need them to play with the first team.

Wholesale changes at this stage of the season is unnecessary. It would be more beneficial to use it as an additional preseason game. Players don't need resting after one match. They need game time to get up to full fitness.

Despite my earlier post predicting something only slightly different - I agree with this (y)

agreed, XI changes is nonsense, if we are doing that because all our players are tired, or because we need match fitness in our reserves, then that would indicate our pre-season wasn't right.

We need 4 or 5 changes max.

It was on the "Team vs Leeds" thread. My bad,

The bench will have alot of the first team sat on it, they can come on at any point second half, I dare bet Leeds will be playing their second string team...get some game time in the majority of the fringe players.

These opportunities don't come along often throughout the season to look at squad players who will be needed later in the season.

Agree to a point.

Personally I don’t like the 2nd choice gk never getting any starts, so I’d always have them starting cup games, especially early rounds. Not resting Dieng just rotation.

Also as lb is our obvious “problem” position I would like to see mccormick in a more meaningful game than he’s played pre season.

Completely agree with you that 11 changes is pointless.

The keeper is probably the only guaranteed change , then probably howsen will start . I’d be amazed if latte doesn’t start considering he loves playing against Leeds but after some issues we had last season he may well be rested .
Continuing a wining habit by not making too many changes should only help at this stage of the season .

Wouldn’t shock me if it’s us that holding this Conway deal up now . Basically waiting for us to complete any other business so we know how much cash we have left . That Nathon wood money must of helped if we’ve actually factored that into our spend
