Next signing after Conway...

I can't see the club signing another attacking midfielder. Azaz and McGree weren't really on it today in an attacking sense but I still think they can be key players for us this season, and Burgzorg and Hamilton may prove to be cracking signings.

Priority needs to be signing a LB. Engel did well today but we can't say confidently that McCormick is ready to make the step up, after a couple of decent performances pre-season vs lower league opposition.

Azaz made some really poor decisions in the 15 mins prior to getting the hook, particularly potential goal scoring opportunities. I presumed he would use the summer to strengthen up a wee bit, but seems not. Physically weak, too easily knocked off balance etc. Clearly has a touch of quality/vision, but does need to improve if he's to be our No10 in a promotion XI

We need some real quality in the final third to go up this year. A conventional left back, even a great one, will only have a limited impact on our points tally. We have lots of options but maybe too many average ones, for me Azaz and McGree aren't starters at No.10 for a top champ team.

Any thoughts...

For me, they are.

Yeah, I agree. He does need to start getting his shots off quicker, rather than taking the extra few touches. He frustrated me today but I still get the feeling there's more to come from him.

Lath & Jones are starters.

Burgzorg not proven at this level, could be the next Ameobi or Mendez Lang (could also be good). Forss always injured.

But I'm talking about No. 10's.
Azaz & McGee inconsistent and slow.

Plus Gilbert, Corburn, Finch & Hamilton don't really have any first team experience... yet.

Lots of players, very little top quality in the final third so far.

Azaz was consistently involved in goals last season - and despite it not being his best game today he could have been involved a few times again.

He is always on the half term. Rarely plays the simple pass. Always looking to create something.

McGree linked everything, covered well and is consistently good.

McGree set the tone in the first half. It’s brilliant when he moves over to the right from the left and finds pockets of space they can’t cope with him.

Our throw ins were a lot more productive yesterday with Ayling finding McGree on numerous occasions coming over from the left.

I’d be happy if we got a LB and shut up shop for ins and outs.

Happily have more incomings don’t get me wrong but If we can get a left back I think there is a good balance to the squad now.

Anything else is a bonus.

I like McGree and Azaz as footballers but they are a long way from being as good as Akpom was in that position. He was pretty much perfect for that role. That means there is a significant room for improvement at 10 so it would be silly to rule out signing someone. I don't think McGree is a 10 in any way. He's too much of a midfielder and not enough of a forward.

Maybe we don't need 29 goals from the 10 like Akpom gave us but I think if we are going to be aiming for the autos we need a lot more than McGree would give us playing there. Azaz is the better option at 10 but I don't think he'll get enough either.

I think both Mcgree and Azaz do better away from home as they find a little bit more time and space in attacking areas. I like both of them but I'm glad we're giving ourselves more options like Hamilton to beat players in 1v1s when teams will sit back against us at the riverside. We just rely on Izzy for that so teams can double up when there's not that threat on the other side.

Chuba though, what a player in that 10 position. Physical presence and prolific goal scoring, it's a lot for the others to live up to.

A long way from being Akpom? Clearly no where near Akpom... and you won't get someone as good as Akpom - he was that good he got a move to the best Dutch team and to play in the CL. McGree is an excellent player and hopefully Azaz improves in a few areas but he also looks very good.
