Next Season is Massive

I have pretty much resigned myself to hoping for the collapse of the football bubble in this country. The flight of all the funds from nation states and oligarchs and the implosion of the football eco system.

Perhaps then we will be able to compete again at whatever remains. It was why I am in favour of the euro super league. Hopefully this would hasten the above scenario.

In a nutshell, if I can't get my way i want the whole thing to collapse, seems fair enough right?

I like being in the championship if we manage to get to the premiership fair enough but the difference in the teams coming down compared to the ones already there is vast and we can expect 2 of the 3 to go back up even all 3 .

There are some differences - firstly the new strategy of buying young players and developing them is a year down the line. It felt like year zero last summer for planting seeds. Next season it will be Year 2. VDB, Greenwood, Silvera, Coburn for example are all a year older and when you are 20 a year is a long time.
Secondly it looks like well established Premier Leagues clubs are not coming down to the Championship this Summer - Luton, Sheffield United and Burnley are likely to replace Leicester, Leeds and Southampton.
Thirdly we can't have as many injuries as this season for example losing our main central defender and captain for nearly all the season.
Fourthly we will have no financial pressure to sell. Of course some big bids might come in and create psychological pressures
Fifthly expecations will be lower, not great to write that but I think doing so well last season has been a bit of a hinderance this season, especially combined with new younger player policy.
Sixthly - Carrick must have learnt things this season to help with next season. Sometimes you learn best from your mistakes. This season has been his first full season in managment.
Sevenly - no Overseas Cups mid season.

So, no money, no manager, no players…
AM - You can't help but laugh at some of the posts.

Take one example our history of selling young players to bigger clubs - Rogers sold after 6 months, Tav sold after 3 regular years in the first team, Spence sold after 3 years (and deemed a problem by most of his former clubs). Average time held 26 months. Not sure Rogers was even a first 11 player - a forward who scored 2 league goals in half a season. Its clear the Rogers sale came as a shock to everyone that Villa would bid upto £16m a bit like the George Saville sale to us i.e its not going to happen every season.

Too many unknowns right now to even think about an exciting season.

1/ I doubt Carrick will be here
2/ I do not believe we have the funds as it stands
3/ Hackney will be gone regardless but even more so because of point 2
4/ Howson will be another year older and whilst he isnt what he was, having him and Hackney both either gone or finished is a worry for the spine of the team

That in itself tells me it could be a very tough season with a new manager and a shoe string budget. It feels very negative at the moment doesn't it? But i see more concern than things to be excited for looking ahead to next season.

Whoever comes down whilst maybe not as dominant as Leeds, Leicester and Soton are proving will still be a damn site better than us and there are plenty of other teams around us who will be expecting/hoping for a push next season.
1. Where's he going? West Ham?, Man United? Newcastle? (if he got us promoted yes i.e I don't think his stock is as high as it was in the Summer of 2023)
2. Just sold two players for fees up to £18.6m?
3. He may go but not because of point2 it was take a very big bid so add another £20m plus to the £18.6m. I still think he needs another season in the Championship to develop - he was playing National League 2 years ago.
4. Howson will be a year older and he may go agreed, but if he goes its a significant salary saving which can be used to give up coming players a salary increase or bring in a new player.

If Carrick stays he risks his reputation if we get nowhere near. There is a real chance that West Ham sack Moyes and it could be soon and when they do, Carrick will be top of the list. He has a strong reputation already and may decide its too good to turn down, especially with promotion almost certainly not happening.

We have but i don't see that £18.6m being used solely for new signings, do you?

Hackney, like Carrick is highly thought of. He is a big part of the current England U21s and is constantly linked with a move, i think this summer he will be snapped up and we wont stand in his way.

Agree re Howson but like everything, its who comes in. This is the risk, whatever budget we have, whatever loans we have, every player is a risk at this level and you need a lot of things/luck to line up for it be successful - like we had in January last season. This season, the opposite.

I hope i am wrong on all points by the way, just my feelings right now

I’m not sure Carrick’s stock is as high as we think.
What’s he achieved? Play off beaten by the mighty Coventry?

Palace are looking for a new manager and he hasn’t been mentioned in their search.
Massive gamble for a Prem club - mind you West Ham are a bit daft.

Be good to know if there is precedent of a manager of a decent Champo club going to a decent Prem club

West hams fans are a bit daft.
West Hams owners secured them a large brand new stadium that the taxpayer picked up the tab for.
Turned them into a steady top flight team.
Brought a manager back that everyone ridiculed and called a dinosaur, who led them into Europe and won a trophy.

Having said that there is a trend in football to appoint managers based on style of play rather than results. So Carrick is more likely to be poached than someone like karanka.

I’m sure McGree will be gone, and quite possibly Hackney as well - obviously he’s a local lad and has been saying he’s wants to stay but if a big offer comes in he will be sold. There will be a massive overhaul of midfield needed if these two go, along with probably two forwards, a left and right back, and maybe a centre half. We could be looking at a very very different line up come August

And then again in Jan probably

I always think buying players in January is like admitting you got it wrong in the summer - and some of our January signings over the years have been absolutely horrendous
I was talking about those bought in sept then being sold in Jan

I really do not know where we are going at minute , it appears anyone & everyone is for sale , which has always been case , but we have in the past fought like hell to keep the important bits of team / upcoming stars . We do need to balance books ,but at what cost , this week has seen the first kickbacks at how we seem to be heading from fans . Will MC fancy it if any key blocks to his side are sold above him , he has a solid rep in football , has taken a small step back this year down to the financial side , if the side appears to go backwards again next season it will be a blott on his book & he may not fancy more of the same . The people involved probably need to give him the players HE fancys & not the "projects" they may like

Gonna be a interesting summer!!!
