Next Season is Massive

We are all frustrated and disappointed. Let's face it we wouldn't be going up even if we snook into the Play Offs. Our squad was never good enough with the likes of Leicester Leeds and Soton in this division. It is not a disaster. Polls at the start of the season showed there wasn't widespread confiidence anyway. Next season we have to strengthen in key areas, keep McGree, Hackney and Azaz, and to make a concerted assault in the top 2. We have the resources in the Bank. I believe we have the manager to do it too.

I cant be bothered to endlessly debate the recruitment team, the tactics etc. The only problem now is to maintain enthusiasm on mid table finish which wont be easy. Kudos to those who continue to support the team and travel to the remaining games. For those who want to just give up good luck.

Hackney will be gone and McGree is likely to be gone as well. I have a feeling we will start poorly again next season and have the same repeated message trotted out "we are building for next season" I understand we are a selling club but part of what made other clubs using this process successful was the fact they held on to players long enough to use them to get wins, before then selling them. To me the Rogers sale was a worrying sign and then not striking a striker even more so, followed by selling Crooks being the final nail in this seasons coffin. What good is it signing players and then selling them as soon as a good offer comes in, if we then don't reinvest into the squad. Rogers could of stayed until summer and we could of used him, or at least chucked some money at a proven goalscorer in January

I have little confidence that we will keep VDB, Hackney and Mcgree. It looks like another massive summer rebuild.

The key is whether we write off next season by signing a load of projects again or players more likely to hit the ground running.

Every season is massive… well they aren’t though are they? Nothing depends on getting promotion.

We are a mid table Championship side. It’ll be awesome if we get into the play-offs or even the autos, but if we don’t we’ll go again the season after.

Depends on your outlook. If you maintain a pessimism then things wont look rosy. But we have been here before and no doubt we will continue to have peaks and troughs in the future. Thats Middlesbrough FC. At the moment it is a trough. I prefer a more positive view. It is better for my morale and health.

And when it turns to $hit because we are trying to save a fiver and buy key players at 10:59 on the 1st September and have 2 points from the first 7 games again then what?

So it's not massive then?

Then you fall into a morass of pessimistic gloom, come on here and moan about it. Again. Pretty simple .

Bloody hell a rare post that doesn't make me want to slit my throat.

We need to spend big on two positions - centre mid to replace Howson, and centre forward to compete with Lath (send Coburn out on loan).

Competition also needed at left wing and number 10.

I see it as a summer of evolution not revolution. Just adding one or two bits of extra quality… maybe even LOANS 😮

So..
Smith
Ayling
Diksteel
McNair
Coulson
Howson
O’Brien
Barlaser
Gilbert
Greenwood
Hoppe
Coburn

12 players to cover for?
and that’s without folks maybe coming in for Hackney or McGree.

We have.. £2.5m left over from the Morgan Rogers sale.. £2m from Matt Crooks.. £7.5m still in the background earmarked for the striker we didn’t sign.. plus an extra £500k for the squeeze on fans.. nah.. we’re not getting that.. just reduced crowds.

£12m.. plus an extra boost from our cup run?
reduction in wages with our highest earners coming to the end of their contracts.

In a way, I think every season that passes now IS more massive than the last.

Our longest consecutive number of seasons in the second tier is 11, and our longest stint outside the top flight is 20 (1954-1974 which included one promotion season from Division 3).

We are going to end up with a similar run if we're not careful, though I'm not actually sure how we can stop it unless SG has a big win on the Euromilions, or sells up.
