Morris came on 78 minutes too late

I put this on the official game thread and needs to be taken into consideration when discussing Morris.

His game for the USA against New Zealand was in Cincinnati which I would argue is at least a 9-hour flight and the UK is 5 hours ahead. Anyone who travels will tell you that would take it out of you.
He’s not flying peasent class, he’ll have a cosy seat to sleep in. Try telling the 70s lads this reason for not starting a game. Games gone soft, public has gone soft, the world has gone to pot. But Tommy Conway is watmore with more class and finished product.

I suppose that will make the flight shorter.

What a load of sh1te. 🤣🤣🤣

How can a professional athlete be tired from flying 7 hours across the pond? Jones has just travelled further. I’m sorry but if we were playing Sunderland or Burnley today it t would have been a different line up. Carrick gambled, it should have worked, but boro being boro, it never.

Poor 👎

Wow, there's a lot of abuse being thrown around here. I think Viv is entitled to be underwhelmed by our start and yesterday was especially disappointing. The next couple of months we need to stand up as we're facing a lot harder tests than we have in those first six games. Maybe it will bring out the best in us. VdB can't come back soon enough and I also start McGree and try Conway up front in place of Lath. Missed chances are costing us game after game. Gilbert is pushing for a start again, I think Borges if ok, but he looks as if he carrying a bit of excess weight.

Accusing Carrick of arrogance is utterly ludicrous IMO.

He's been anything but since he arrived. He will make mistakes (as do all managers) but I don't think for a second he expects to beat any team easily or doesn't take every game seriously.

That's just people's emotions getting the better of them.

Felt to me like Carrick seen it as an opportunity to keep Barlaser happy. “Hecky” literally told the world their game plan on Thursday and we did nothing. We needed someone in the middle to get stuck in not play 5 yard backwards and sideways passes.

We just don't look as strong in the midfield without him but as I said on the match thread it's important to remember his season started in January and it's a long old season in the Championship.

We need him available for as much as the season as possible and probably need to manage him a bit to get him through, especially if he's gonna be flying around the world playing for the US.
Howson should be his backup if fit. Barlaser is not good enough

Morris looked sharp when he came on, and combines so well with Hackney - more so than Barlaser did during his time on the pitch.

No signs of weariness that I saw - should have started then brought off if he faded.

I imagine Carrick now regrets not starting him.

You've just knocked two hours off the travel time from Cincinnati to the UK. It takes 8 hours 45 mins to fly direct from Cincinnati (where the USA played on Wednesday) to Heathrow. Then there is the little issue of getting to and from the airport. We won't even take into account getting through customs, etc. It doesn't matter who you are, the time difference and travel will take it out of you. Carrick made a judgment call that I feel if explained prior to the game, many fans would have agreed with.

Regarding Jones, if you see the other thread, I mentioned it might have been a good time to start Doak instead of Jones (who I felt was largely ineffective).

We have another international window in October, let's see what happens then with Morris, McGree, Jones, etc. flying off long distances.

Yeah I think the order is clearly Morris, Hackney, Howson then Barlaser but I also think you have to have Howson or Morris in any pairing, you can't have Hackney and Barlaser as we never win 2nd balls with that pairing.

I wonder if Howson coming back from injury influenced the decision to play Barlaser.
