Morris came on 78 minutes too late

I agree with those who've said that Morris should have started. He looked bright and sharp after coming on. He could have started the game and Carrick could have then brought him off during the 2nd half had he got tired.

I don't actually believe he would have become tired though.

Okay ‘arrogance’ may have been pushing it. But leaving your best-performing midfielder so far on the bench in favour of a man who has proven himself not the right fit for our team is just not right imo. And if he was fatigued then how is he fit enough to come and play 25mins. If he can do 25 then he can do 65-70 and come off when we’re 2-0 up. I will never, ever buy into the idea that players you’ve ‘rested’ can come off the bench. You’re resting them or you’re not.

We’ve been without 8, 9, 10 senior players every match for the best part of a calendar year. That’s a separate issue in some ways - and one we are no closer to resolving by the looks of it - but weakening yourself further because you’re not playing one of the division’s ’big hitters’ is really poor. Barlaser should’ve been upgraded in the summer, let’s be honest. To have him starting games when Morris is sitting on the bench is madness. It comes across as trying to be clever. If we’d had the next round of the cup coming up and he was saving him then at least he’d have that to fall back on but we don’t. We’re out of the cup because we capitulated and lost 5-0 at home to Stoke. 5-0 at home to Stoke. Jesus Christ.

I think you’re overthinking it, Morris hasn’t had a break since January and he’s just been on a long journey for international duty.

I don’t think it’s arrogance or trying to be clever, just trying to protect a player who will essentially be going 17 months without a break if he makes it through a 46 game Championship season without injury.

If that’s true then it sort of makes not upgrading Barlaser this summer even dafter. He’s not what we need and Howson is 35/36 and has started picking up injuries. Hackney missed half of last season injured. Morris now can’t be relied on because he’ll playing for USA. It’s not ideal is it. We’ve left ourselves short again imo.

And that is compounded by the fact we have McGree who, if not injured, will be flying to Australia every couple of months. At least we have decent cover for McGree but if still rather he was on the pitch.

No way was that arrogance by Carrick.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's dictated by the physio's and the medical team. We saw it regularly with the likes of Liverpool under Klopp benching/resting Diaz after nearly every international break, regardless who they faced.

There'll be some sort of traffic light system and if Morris was amber, then no way can he start as the risk of an injury is too great.

Playing 25 minutes compared to 60 minutes is completely different if close to red.

Exactly this. And they'll be particularly cautious because of the injury issues we've had (and are still having).

None of us are sports scientists (I suspect). None of us have access to the information the club have. And there is absolutely no chance Carrick leaves out his best midfielder (on form this season) particularly not with no game for a week after, unless someone with expertise in the area isn't advising him there's some sort of increased risk to starting him.

That's not trying to be clever or arrogant, that's a decision (rightly or wrongly) made on information available and taking into account we've got a full season ahead of us.

Agree.

And for those suggesting we could have started him and then hooked him on the hour at 2-0 up....I'll have next weeks lottery numbers please.

And no doubt these same posters would be the ones booting off at Carrick if he started Morris and he picked up a muscle injury ruling him out for weeks/months...

Not starting Morris was not the main reason we didn't win that game on Saturday.

He didn’t pick up a muscle injury though. And it’s yet another home game where we’ve failed to beat one of the poorer sides in the league. My frustration comes from this being something of a pattern under Carrick stretching back to the start of last season. Most of our home games are a carbon copy of each other. Pass, pass, pass, miss chance, miss chance, miss chance, score, step off and sit back, concede, spend the rest of the match banging our head against the wall. If it’s not that it’s pass, pass, pass, get caught out and concede, spend the rest of the match banging our head against the wall. It’s happening too frequently and it must change otherwise we’re just going to finish 8th-12th again. You can’t drop this many points against apparently inferior and considerably less well-resourced teams and expect to get away with it.

Exactly what I was saying and was being vilified for when the window ended. Barlaser should not be playing at all, Howson isn’t the player he was. So essentially we have Morris & Hackney.

That’s weak.

He didn’t pick up a muscle injury though
Exactly...and yet if he started, he might have (not saying he would have definitely, but the chances increase).....and then if he did get injured, all hell would've broke out between the fanbase with the derby coming up and games starting to come thick and fast.

We don't know what happens behind closed doors, for Carrick to drop/rest Morris....but judging the amount of games he's played and the travel, then it's likely have been a decision that Carrick was forced to do by his medical team. It feels like the decision was out of Carrick's hand IMO.

Especially because we all know Morris makes our best 11 and I doubt for one second Carrick played Barlaser and 'rested' Morris because it was Preston.
