Mood tomorrow ???

It’s been a while since we’ve had a home game like this one, on a record run of no wins into the season that promised so much, and one of the ex prem big boys rocking up to provide arguably our biggest test of the season this far.

So what are expecting the mood in the stands to be as it could be pretty toxic.

Carrick got a taste of his first bit of hostility against QPR. The team were booed off at half time and they were heading for the exits after the second goal went in. That in itself is a new challenge for Carrcik to deal with.

The hostility will only get worse if the results and performances don't change. I think the crowd will be straight on their back this week if we don't start well. There are individuals who will get it worse than others.

I think Carrick needs to keep Silvera and Engel out the team to protect to be honest. I don't think either should be playing anyway.

At Blackburn last week it was the most subdued I've seen Boro fans in years. Just a massive malaise, even in the concourse before kick off. Like a resignation we were going to get beat.

Expect the same at the Riverside tomorrow......bit more discontent if/when we go behind.

I wonder if we get a few clashes in the stands as tempers flare normally get a few disagreements in situations like this.

When these threads pop up in times of strife, I always get the sense that some people secretly want there to be some drama in the stands. You see people saying ‘go a goal down and it could be toxic’ but I’ve been watching us for 32 years and it’s very, very rarely ever been what you would call ‘toxic’ IMO.

I remember a lot of people being very angry at a point in the 1993/94 season, with some trouble in the Holgate and some protests against the board. I remember some real anger - which turned to apathy - towards the end of Robbo’s reign just before Venables pitched up. There was anger in the Villa game under McClaren one year. I think there was anger when we went down under Southgate but because it was a sort of slow trudge towards relegation, we never really reached what you would call a ‘toxic atmosphere’. Mogga being abused at Barnsley was pretty disgusting.

Has there been much anger since then? Not really IMO. Some booing, some abuse. People just stop going don’t they? Rather than protesting in the stands.
If we do go a goal down tomorrow, there won’t be any real ‘toxicity’ IMO. People will moan, a few will boo, most will just drift off for an early pint and have a moan in the concourse.

There’s just a sense that a growing number of people have sort of given up on both Carrick and the team and would secretly quite like the drama of a sacking and a new manager coming in.

Southampton will have the ball a lot.

So I fully expect there to be a lot of moaning, angry Boro fans from around 10/15 minutes in unless we've scored.
