When these threads pop up in times of strife, I always get the sense that some people secretly want there to be some drama in the stands. You see people saying ‘go a goal down and it could be toxic’ but I’ve been watching us for 32 years and it’s very, very rarely ever been what you would call ‘toxic’ IMO.
I remember a lot of people being very angry at a point in the 1993/94 season, with some trouble in the Holgate and some protests against the board. I remember some real anger - which turned to apathy - towards the end of Robbo’s reign just before Venables pitched up. There was anger in the Villa game under McClaren one year. I think there was anger when we went down under Southgate but because it was a sort of slow trudge towards relegation, we never really reached what you would call a ‘toxic atmosphere’. Mogga being abused at Barnsley was pretty disgusting.
Has there been much anger since then? Not really IMO. Some booing, some abuse. People just stop going don’t they? Rather than protesting in the stands.
If we do go a goal down tomorrow, there won’t be any real ‘toxicity’ IMO. People will moan, a few will boo, most will just drift off for an early pint and have a moan in the concourse.
There’s just a sense that a growing number of people have sort of given up on both Carrick and the team and would secretly quite like the drama of a sacking and a new manager coming in.
