Minutes Silence and National Anthem - why?

But no official statement = hearsay.
Point taken.

It looks as though the story originated in the Daily Mail, so it'd come as no surprise to find out it's completely made up.

Interesting to see how quickly it took off and how far it's spread.

How many people have been fed from donations to the various football club foodbanks?

Are they not a worthy charitable cause?

And before you suggest people can donate elsewhere, remember that the same goes for all the donations for the GNR.

Having a focal point for the donations is the whole point.
So the match won't go ahead ever then?

Are football foodbanks a charitable cause or not?

Foodbanks are time dependant. If they don't get donations then they can't provide for people in need.

Postponing a match means a foodbank that was relying on donations from people going to that match will now be short.

I don't understand the GNR charity angle.

Are people genuinely saying that they would sponsor someone to do the GNR, and if it's cancelled then they'd say "no, you didn't run, so I'm keeping the money"?

That's kind of what sponsoring for a fun run means mate. Someone puts in effort and training and does a tough thing, in order to earn the money for charity. Agreed most people would still donate but it kind of destroys the celebration of the effort put in to raise that money.

Look, to be clear, I agree the football should have gone ahead. I went to a rugby match on the Saturday with no issue, apart from the fact the atmosphere was a bit sombre. I'm just saying comparing it to the great north run and the huge amounts it bring in for charity is just misguided. Yiu can have better, more relevant arguments for it to go ahead than to try and attack something that so many people put so much effort into.

What about: football is the sport of the working class and therefore THE one true sport in the country. And the best way to celebrate a life as a country is to gather en masse at the one thing that unites most people.

The main issue was lack of police resources due to operation unicorn/ tower bridge. Anything else was just spin. A one off event like GNR was small beer compared a nation wide football schedule where there is a history of big crowds and confrontation between rival supporters. I'd bet that if this had happened during covid lock down and no crowds then the games would have gone ahead.
