Minutes Silence and National Anthem - why?

I appreciate some of this has been discussed to death but weren't the reasons given for postponing games on Saturday

i) to allow people to pay their respects, and
ii) to prevent anyone protesting and or elsewise ruining the silence

So if everyone (that wanted to) has paid their respects, and the silence can still be ruined, why did we have them last night.

And why couldn't we just have done that on Saturday?

I'm not particularly interested in whether or not we should have had them.

Just wondering why we banned all football for a variety of reasons but did all the things some of those reasons were explicity given for.

Good points - and no run out music in either half, no goal music, it all added to the already flat atmosphere. Talk about over the top over kill. The queen died, very sad an all that but life goes on. It’s all just virtue signalling really

The footballing authorities were probably too worried about the media portraying them as disrespectful if they played on the weekend, rather than any genuine fear of fans making a scene.

I'm sure they're aware they made a stupid decision, but they've made their beds now.

I think that the fear of being 'called out' for doing nothing led to them finding something/anything to do.

You'd presume that perhaps in a jubilee year for an elderly monarch, the conversation would have came up between them and the DCMS as to what might be appropriate actions, if any...

Spot on. You could rest assured the 'usual suspects' would have painted the decision to play as disrespectful. As the Guardian Fiver football blog noted ......... cricket, golf, horse racing, rugby union, rugby league or any of the other sports that went ahead without anyone literally bursting with pomposity or self-righteous indignation

This whole week has been full of various organisations trying to outdo each other in the "respect" stakes.

Boards of directors have absolutely soiled themselves as the event basically has no precedent. Clearly feel like they have to do something, regardless of how it looks or how it could harm the brand.

If you sing the national anthem that's ok. If you don't sing the national anthem that's also ok and you will be processed in due course.*

*shamelessly lifted from yesterday's David Squire's Guardian football cartoon

They didn’t want the liverpool fans making a fool of themselves during either the minute silence or the national anthem.
Regardless of the fact that Liverpool managed to observe the silence, the question is why did we have one, given that the game on Saturday was postponed in lieu of respectful observance?

We had all Saturday to pay our respects (if we wanted). Why were we 'forced' to do it last night (I know no one was actively forced but the expectation was that it wasn't to be spoiled)?

Just very strange all round no matter your feelings on the monarchy.

I brought this up too. Football cancelled ‘out of respect’ but the Great North Run went ahead ‘in tribute’. Didn’t seem to balance up.
Grassroots football cancelled.
But not for the Eton Boys..

I don’t think the Blackpool game should have been cancelled cost a lot of people a lot of money. Black armband and national anthem job done.. but you don’t get a do over! Be respectful or cancel the game.

Surely you can see why the GNR went ahead people travelled from around the world for this plus charities rely on the funding.

There’s no comparison

Not sure why people are offended when asked to hold a minutes silence a few times over 10 days. It’ll be over by Monday. Calm down dear! ;)
Agree, too much hand wringing, head shaking and whining. Businesses and other organisations have every right to choose to pay their respects whenever they choose. Its not too much of a hardship, or is it?

Who mentioned being offended?

The question is why was the game postponed specifically to not have a minutes silence disrespected and then hold the minutes silence anyway?

I'd fully accept that going to a footy match on Friday, a Rugby match on Saturday, a West End show on Saturday night and a Cricket game on the Sunday might involve a minutes silence at each (and I'd happily observe them). However, if I'm told that the reason my plans have been officially changed but my expenses won't be refunded is something that later happens anyway then I'm probably entitled to question that decision.

Businesses have every right to do what they want. Customers have every right to question those decisions.

In a cost of living crisis do you not think some people may have experienced hardship due to the lack of recompense?

People save up for particular away games and certainly for Boro fans the Blackpool game is always well attended.

People paid for hotels and/or travel to e.g. Blackpool. Why is a football fan different in that respect to someone travelling for the GNR.

I've known plenty of people travelling from abroad for particular games, especially in London. The comparison is as perfect as it gets.

1 less game to play before the WC, so they lumped everyone in on the excuse they gave

Imagine if England can win the WC the same year as our Queen/Head of State dies

Cream everywhere

;)

Last night Gary Phillipson announced at about 7:25 that the fan zone bar was closing in 5 minutes as the club wanted fans to get inside early so they can pay their respects and take advantage of ‘the quiet time’ for some reflection…

It was a bloody football match. Ruined the atmosphere.

No it’s not

How much money was raised for charity by our match last night ?? Or could have been raised at Blackpool.

There’s no comparison
