We did well getting to #9.
James Callaghan may have been a better presenter back in the day. Then again many on here weren't around in them dark days.

It did make me smile when you posted that.

I mentioned in my first post that I had a huge dislike for Portillo the politician but enjoyed his train journeys. The trouble is there are too many on here who allow hate to impact their lives.

Very true, I have always said 'they are all in it for themselves' regardless of party colour. I survived the 70's and the dark days of this Country but hold no grudges. Past caring about political shoite nowadays.
 
Middlesbrough really was the Victorian Town that had the railways at its heart.

Iron and steel was needed for the engines.

Iron and steel was used for its stations - e.g. the ornate canopies.

Iron and steel was needed for its bridges

LNER owned Middlesbrough Dock which was surrounded by a web of railway lines

Railway lines brought the ironstone from the Eston Hills, East Cleveland, Rosedale to the furnaces along the Tees, the coal from County Durham, the limestone from the Pennines.

Railways took the finished products away from Teesside

Some the Ironmasters also were owner directors of the LNER e.g. Hugh Bell

When the railways did well so did Middlesbrough and when the car, lorry and planes replaced the railways. Middlesbrough started to struggle.
 
Watched it last night portilo made a big thing about deindustrialisation and about thatcher walking on the wasteland promising replacing industry with new jobs and a vibrant new world. As he pointed out he was a member of the cabinet at the time what he failed to mention was it was a token effort and an abject failure with whole communities decimated by job loses never to recover. He failed, the Conservative government failed, even labour did next to nothing.
 
Leaving aside the man’s awful politics the programme was interesting and showed some good things. For example, I remember Saltholme being a farm as a kid, but had to idea it was ran on behalf of ICI to test fertiliser products.

That way, many of us won't make these silly mistakes of enjoying a simple programme on the TV. Maybe the list could be updated daily with programmes we can watch.

Its really quite simple, you can like what you want but be mindful not to berate others for what they like. Live and let live or summat.
