Michael Carrick's VAR point after Middlesbrough penalty decision he can laugh off this time

Michael Carrick says some consideration must be taken into the future of Premier League referees coming down to do Championship games because of the lack of VAR.

It comes after Middlesbrough lost 2-1 at Luton Town, courtesy of a penalty in which replays clearly showed minimal, if any, contact between Carlton Morris and Boro goalkeeper Zack Steffen. Morris claimed after the game there was contact and, at the speed he was going, enough to take him down, but replays suggest otherwise.

The striker picked himself up to convert the spot kick and secure a come-from-behind victory for his side. With little on the game, it was one Carrick said he could thankfully 'laugh off' on this occasion, but still wanted the make the point about VAR and Premier League referees.

Carrick said: "It's a bad decision. In the circumstances, we can laugh it off today in some ways. But I do wonder with referees from the Premier League, maybe they're so used to VAR that it gives them a lot of insurance. This isn't something aimed particularly at the referee tonight, but in general, it might be something to look at.

"Tonight didn't count for too much really, but that could be a crucial decision at some point. Whether it's this season or next, it is very different for referees if they're coming down and they haven't got that security for the big, big decisions.

"But, as I say, I'm not moaning about tonight because it is what it is. It was never a penalty, of course it wasn't. But maybe that is something to think about moving forward."

Graham Scott was the man in the middle for the Luton-Boro game. A Premier League referee since 2014, it was the 55-year-old's ninth second-tier game of the season. And despite Carrick's thoughts on it, his opposite number Rob Edwards felt it was the correct decision.

Asked his opinion, the Hatters boss said: “There’s some contact there on Carlton. We’ve watched it back a few times, you need a certain angle, there is contact so he’s gone down. If I was in their position, you look at certain angles, you’d be disappointed. But from the angle I’ve seen, there’s contact, he’s gone down, penalty."

So Rob Edwards view on it was basically if you watch it from a certain angle, turn the brightness down a bit and squint then you can probably kid yourself there was contact.

and as well all know, if you feel any contact, players are "entitled" to go down.

so definite penalty 😂

Edwards is protecting his own arze and his cheat Morris.
Bit like when Mowbray "didnt see" Fry nearly lose an eye when his Blackburn player stuck the studs down his face.

Take away the dive and consequently the penalty can you remember anything that Charlton Morris did in that game he was totally anonymous.

I know it’s a cliche but these things do tend to even out. I just hope if a decision goes against Luton in the playoffs that costs them the game Mr Edwards can be just as circumspect.

Sometimes managers just need to come out and say, yep we got one today and I wouldn’t have been happy if it was given against us.

I would also say 3 of last goals from corners would have been ruled out for blocking obstruction fouls as well.

this is the thing moaning about decisions against you, no one ever points out the ones that went our way that shouldn't have.

they only matter and get dwelled on when your not doing well

We dont score from corners so theres none tgat hace gone our way

Agree, but we need to be more streetwise. Can’t concede like that just because of a block.

Also why can’t we score goals like that?
Personally i hate zonal marking and would prefer man to man but its too big a change late in the season. My answer would be if you are dragged to the floor or blocked you take their man with you you dont let them past under any circumstance if they commit the foul first its highly unlikely you will give a away a penalty . The Huddersfield goal from corner was exactly the same the guy who scored the header barged our player to the ground to get a free run, we need a bit more of the italian attitude of though shall not pass as you say being streetwise and playing to the whistle. I am sure luton have looked at our defending from corners and came up with set piece routines with tatical blocking

Our entire system is based on trying to be tight at the back but basically outscoring the opposition - Hull is a great example, they get a goal but we then score 3 in 10 minutes, totally destroys their momentum and kills the game dead. We have done it since Carrick arrived and it works brilliantly. We will always give goals away, our defence is pretty bang average for the Championship, but we will always score goals and generally more than the opposition.

5 first team starters out last night, put them back in and in any meaningful match we would have blown Luton away last night, as we will do if we meet them at Wembley

Would VAR have over ruled it?
Interesting Q.
I don't think it would as IMO there was minimal contact between Steffan's knee & the strikers foot.
VAR would've said the ref didn't make a “clear and obvious error” so their decision would be confirmed.

I dont buy that outscoring means you dont defend properly at all. We werent bombing forward at all times and it is possible to play attacking football and be mean at the back. Look at Liverpool when they won the title they were more attacking than us and were mercilessly mean at the back with van dyke. Goals from corners we have conceded far to many and that has absolutely nothing to do with attacking overload or the players on the pitch. Its quite simply defensive errors and the marking tatics employed

We are pretty bad at set-pieces generally, don't score many & let in quite a few. Definitely something to improve but I think we've been saying that for a few years now.
