Messi - officially on the market

I’m sorry mate but we here this so many times and I always find it’s the most ridiculous statement in football.
“It’s all very well and good saying he’s a good player but can he do the job at boundary park I. February?” Yes, yes he can
At 34 having been surrounded by the best players in the world and cossetted since his early teens....
We'll see. But we probably won't. Unless a PSG or City etc come in for him cant see many other teams taking on his demands.
Odds are he'll stay put.

Him and a few others have pretty much bankrupt Barca.

I agree with a lot of that. It was the “he won’t be able to do it on a rainy Wednesday in Brentford” that I found silly.

not least because Brentford’s pitch and facilities look state of the art but mainly because of this crazy notion that a player can’t be considered great until he’s played on a gluepot pitch in freezing conditions.
It’s like saying “yeah, Bolt is a quick runner and all that, but has he proved himself on the potholed cinder track at Preston athletics centre IN THE RAIN, no, no he hasn’t “

Interesting the fact he looked nailed on to win yet another Ballon D'or again after his heroics for Argentina in the Copa America.

Mail are reporting today he wants to go to City and avoid PSG because of their high tax rates...

Would love to see him in the PL just to prove all those idiot doubters wrong.

He obviously won't be as good as he was in his prime being 34 years old. But he's still more than capable of being the best player in the league.

Tbf I never said he doesn't become a great player until he hasn't played on a gluepot pitch in freezing conditions.
I don't doubt his ability.
My point being his motivation. Having spent his entire career palying in front of 100k at home in temperate conditions to playing in front of a handful.....
I do doubt his motivation and I take that from his International performances, especially in major tounaments. Until recently. where admitedly he's been great for the Argies, he was famous for disappearing.

BTW I'd love to see him in the Prem, would be fascinating to see how he'd cope.
Doubt there's be any real football fan who wouldn't want him here?

For the purpose of clarity, I'll explain a little more clearly my position.

Messi was on staggering money at Barca, money that makes him one of the richest sportspeople in history. He has an insane amount of wealth and I understand his relationship with Barca has been mutually beneficial. I know he had already agreed a large pay cut, though it turns out Barca can't afford that.

My point is that he could potentially play for relative pennies and never feel the pinch because of his professed love of the club. I accept he owes Barca nothing and vice versa but loyalty and love of the club have always been huge to him apparently though that's easy to do when you're getting paid insane amounts of money.

His character has to be called into question given his tax evasion which unfortunately colours my judgment of him, and it seems to me he has gone chasing more money.

As I mentioned last night I've got virtually pennies in the bank and I'd run through brick walls for free to play for the Boro. It's not about money, it's about love of the club.

Higgy took a good sized reduction in pay to prove his worth and I bet he'd didn't avoid paying his taxes.

Messi could play for free if he loved the club that much as I can't see how having a contract paying zero, or next to it, could stop him being signed up again by Barca.

He is the best player in the world. Why would he play for free? The way they treated him last summer embarrassed him. No one can question he loves the club. Maybe he just doesn’t love how it’s ran at the moment. You are barking down the wrong tree again.

I agree, he'd be effective in any league, you don't get the record he has from being a flash in the pan.

La Liga, Internationally, Champions League, all at a very high standard too, it's not like he's only done it in the Mongolian second Division against Goat Herders United.

Those that say he wouldn't cut it over here are ignoring a huge body of evidence.
The pace and type of game played in this country is completely different to the game in Spain and different to the champions league. I’ve watched enough football to know, it’s my opinion and an informed opinion at that. He simply wouldn’t get the time on the ball.

Its been mentioned numerous times now, but if he offered to play for free they still cant register him, what dont you understand about this? It has nothing at all to do with money

Literally haven't got a clue have you?

No one's happy with a pay cut.
Jenson Button was. He took a pay cut once so the team he was racing for could survive. It won him the world championship. Some people consider excelling in their field over money.
Mind when asked about it he did also say “yeah, I took a pay cut, but I’m not on the breadline”

The point I'm making, and have been from the start of the thread, is that loyalty is only loyalty if he's getting paid richly for it.

I know what happened last summer, but getting paid stupid money for another 2 or 3 years makes no difference to him. He's insanely rich.

I also know that the reason Barca are in the crap is because of silly wages and transfer fees for years and years. I'm not absolving them of any blame in this, they are also culpable for this situation.

However, nobody seems to be taking my point on board that love and loyalty, if genuine, needn't come at a huge cost. I'd play for free as I'm sure nearly every person on this board would yet I'm being rounded on by a number of posters for suggesting Messi isn't exactly a saint.

How can he not play for free? No cost to the club and they arent under any embargo. Player plays for fee, no cost, nothing to register for FFP costs.

I will point you to to JM and Marvanelli’s comments.

Look into it, rules are different to the prem. As it stands they cant register him regardless of the finances. Hopeful it changes but as it stands they cant do anything

If that's the case then I stand corrected but literally no report I have seen has said this, they've said the agreed reduced wages are now unaffordable.
